I don't think I've ever received flowers and not loved them. I love tulips, roses, ranunculus - I'm not picky at all. OK, I'm not a fan of carnations, but even then. . .

Whether they're from a friend to say "thank you" or a significant other to say "I love you," flowers just make you feel better. And if no one's giving you flowers - get them for yourself!

Where Do You Stand? Guys Buying You Clothes

On a list boldly titled 25 Skills Every Man Should Know, the May issue of Esquire offers advice for men looking to buy clothing for women. The tools required: a credit card and a woman's clothing size. The steps, according to the article:

Ha! Clearly the mag has a pretty immovable position on whether guys should buy women clothing as gifts, but is it justified? I'll admit, I've gotten some pretty terrible gifts from guys that I then felt obligated to wear, but I've also had boyfriends who were great at picking out my style. So what's your take? Is it always a terrible idea for men to buy women clothes?

What to Bring to an Engagement Party

First things first: you are almost never required to bring a present to an engagement party. In fact, bringing something too extravagant could be considered poor taste. The couple will get plenty of gifts at the wedding, so you don't want to overdo it at the more informal gathering.

But, if you're like me, you probably want to share your excitement for the couple by offering them a thoughtful gift. Here are some things to keep in mind:

Lighten up: Depending on the couple's sense of humor they may get a chuckle out of a book like Honeymooners Forever: Twelve Step Marriage Survival Guide.
DIY: You could team up with friends to make a photo memory book of good times shared among the couple and your group of friends. Or you could put together a book of well-wishes from the guests and present it to the couple.
Keep it simple: a nice bottle of wine or a fancy box of chocolates shows that you're in the mood to celebrate.
Stick with the planning theme: Planning a Wedding to Remember: The Perfect Wedding Planner would be thoughtful and useful.
Be sincere: A heartfelt card might make the best gift of all.

Group Therapy: Am I a Green-Eyed Monster?

I have been in a serious, monogamous relationship for nearly seven months. Both of us are very much in love, and I have been looking forward to our first holiday season together. For Christmas, he gave me a beautiful paper star lamp that hangs from the ceiling, which I had pointed out to him while shopping this Fall. However, this Summer his ex-girlfriend - whom he dated for five years - gave him back the necklace he gave her for their first Christmas which was a beautiful, ornate, heavy silver choker which probably cost around $150, whereas my gift cost about $25. I'm not really what you would call "materialistic," and the lamp itself is a nice gift, but I often have issues with their still-close relationship and the difference between the two gifts makes it seem as though he values me less, or thinks of our relationship as less of an "investment" than theirs.

I know this Christmas is less grand for everyone this year, but he has a job that is relatively unaffected by the recession. I spent around a $100 on him, and I'm a student! He's older, has a job and a house and money to spend on luxuries. Should I tell him he's offended me? Or just let it go? I don't want to sound like a brat, but she got a beautiful, sentimental gift, and I got a house-warming present! I feel like I'm always "second best."

You Asked: Do I Have a Right to Feel Cheated?

Dear Sugar,

My husband and I had a decent size wedding of about 120 people. Each guest cost my parents about $130. One family we invited sticks out in particular. Eight people in their party showed up (all adults) and when it came time to open gifts after the wedding, theirs was $100 - $100 from eight grown, working adults!! My husband and I were both shocked initially because the family is pretty well-off, but my husband decided we should let it go.

We've been married for over a year now and I can't seem to completely get over this. They are family friends of my husband so I hate to mention it to him, but it still hurts me to this day. I know I'm being selfish, but do I have a right to feel kind of cheated? I would never dare approach the family about it, but I've lost a lot of respect for them. In fact, their daughter (who attended our wedding) is getting married at the end of the month and I'm tempted to skimp out on her gift just in spite. Are my feelings justified? Giving a gift of $100 from eight people is definitely a little cheap, but you might not know what their financial situation is - while they appear to have a lot of money, times are tough right now for pretty much everyone. With that said, you have a right to be a little annoyed, sure, but since a year has past, I'd say it's time to just let it go. If you're tempted to be stingy with this woman's wedding gift, go ahead, but I think the better option would be to rise above your anger, be the bigger person, and give them a moderate wedding gift as if nothing happened.

When it comes to wedding etiquette, there are no black and white rules. I prefer to think of each wedding on a case-by-case basis. Factor in what you've already done for the couple: if you've given the couple a shower and engagement gift, bought a bridesmaid dress, or traveled far just to attend their wedding, I think it's perfectly acceptable to give a less expensive gift. If the wedding is the only event you've attended, I suggest purchasing something off their registry in a price range that fits your financial situation - anywhere from $50 to $100 is adequate. Consider how close you are to the couple as well, but like I said before, there are no real rules so do whatever feels right. I hope I was of some help!
