Tina Fey's On Most Liberal Show, Says She's "Leaving Earth"

Tina Fey, whose SNL career has been resurrected thanks to Sarah Palin laid down somewhat Baldwin-esque plans for post-election. That is, if McCain and Palin win. Fey says, “That lady is a media star. She is a fascinating person, she’s very likeable. She’s fun to play, and the two bits with Amy, that was super fun." Here's where the Baldwin comes in. She's firm on her deadline. “We’re gonna take it week by week. If she wins, I’m done. I can’t do that for four years. And by ‘I’m done,’ I mean I’m leaving Earth.” Oh.

Could the strong feelings have anything to do with her day job? Fey is on 30 Rock just dubbed by Gawker as the "most liberal show" on TV. Using, I'm sure, complicated math - they've placed a bunch of popular TV shows on a spectrum from most conservative (24) to most liberal (30 Rock). What's a happy medium show, politically? Oddly, South Park is parked right in the middle with what they call "its own brand of Libertarianism." Do the rankings seem off or right on? Any shows you'd add to the spectrum? I'm wondering where Lost would go. . . .

A curly mullet, a creepy woman fawning over said curly mullet - this Hair Club For Men commercial is going to give me nightmares. I shouldn't ruin the end for you, but like all great things in life, this ad is as much about the journey as it is about the destination. In other words, you'll be so stunned by its premise (that a fake curly mullet is better than a bald head) that you won't care that I'll reveal that the girl doing the creepy fawning is his stepdaughter. Ewww, and ewww.

Flashback: Drunk Larry King?

OK, so it's not clear if Larry is really drunk, but his answer to this earnest caller is definitely loopy! (Fruit Loopy, perhaps?) Gawker unearthed this awesome tape of Larry (from a while back) responding to a guy who called in to ask for tips on how to break into journalism and succeed in the career. Let's just say that his answer could've been more succinct: Booze - lots and lots of booze. (Or, to be fair, sleep deprivation. This was taped at 3 a.m., after all!) Is Your Favorite Anchor Loved by Liberals?

I've always suspected - since it's nearly impossible to be completely neutral - that some news jockeys are a scootch partisan. After all, one errant blink, and bam! Branded. Even Liberty and I have our favorites: She hearts Chris Matthews, and I'm hopelessly devoted to Wolf Blitzer - even though he has a nasty habit of saying, "this is interesting . . ." and then following up with something that's, uh, not interesting. But I forgive. Relationships are hard work.

Those crafty kids at Gawker graphed the approval ratings of over twenty news anchors, from Katie Couric to Rush Limbaugh, based on political party. Of course Democrats hate Rush Limbaugh, but get this: Republicans don't actually like him with a reciprocal intensity. And how do the three big winners, Charlie Gibson, Brian Williams, and Anderson Cooper, manage to be loved by all? Alas, our poor Chris Matthews and Wolf Blitzer didn't fare so well. How did your favorite anchor measure up? Do you watch that anchor precisely because you feel like he/she agrees with you?

Gawkers Go to Gay District Sparking Resident Concerns

Some tourists treat San Francisco's gay population as a tourist attraction. Residents of the historic gay Castro District have reported an increase in large tour buses, which drop off thousands of nervous visitors ready to snap photos of two men holding hands or point and stare in shock.

While Castro dwellers and merchants welcome visitors and their cash with open arms, they have little tolerance for the new breed of non-shoppers. And things might not get better - now that Hollywood has used Castro Street as the set for the upcoming movie Milk, a film about the first gay councilman in the US who was killed by his fellow San Francisco councilman, I imagine that the city's gay neighborhood will attract even more gawkers after the film's release.

Positive curiosity might signal the end of a gay-stigma, and I don't blame residents for feeling like animals in a zoo. If San Francisco wants to base much of its economy on tourism, should it swallow the consequences?

Why Are There No Female Movie Critics on National Television?

I used to love watching Siskel and Ebert's movie reviews on television. They had such a great rapport, both had different tastes, and there was just something warm and cozy about the set, Gene Siskel's professorial air (and elbow-patched jackets), and Roger Ebert's roly-poly charm.

I was very sad when Siskel died in 1999, and although Ebert remained and teamed up with movie critic Richard Roeper, I stopped watching as regularly. At the Movies degenerated (in my opinion and many others') when Ebert's thyroid cancer treatment required that he suspend his appearances. His replacements? The experience-challenged Ben Lyons (son of movie and theater critic Jeffrey Lyons) and Ben Mankiewicz. What's the remedy for this seeming movie critic boys' club? read more.

Ben Mankiewicz I didn't mind as much - at least his curmudgeonly air was backed up with some decent reviewing. But Ben Lyons's facile reviews (Gawker has some great examples here) and the fact that he got the job - let's be honest - because of his father, turned the At the Movies franchise into a joke.

So it was with a sigh of relief that I read that Lyons and Mankiewicz were sacked and will be replaced (sigh) with two other male movie critics.

As a movie buff, I make it a point to read reviews a lot, and there are no dearth of intelligent, hip, and witty female critics. It's amazing to me that, given Hollywood's infamously sexist treatment of women (the paucity of female directors, putting older actresses out to pasture while grizzled actors continue to get roles with young actresses, the near-requirement that actresses bare their breasts or play prostitutes), you'd think there would be some sensitivity around hiring some female critics on television.

At the Movies could have updated its tired franchise by providing some female voices into the mix. It's not just that female critics miss out on a chance to get more exposure (and perhaps a bigger salary), we viewers miss out on different female perspectives. Although there's not a monolithic female perspective, there needs to be some kind of female perspective!

B. Ruby Rich has proven to be a compelling, engaging, and television-friendly critic, having substituted for Ebert when he was sick. New York Times movie critic Manohla Dargis is acerbic and astute, and any number of other female critics (Stephanie Zacharek, Dana Stevens, or Carina Chocano) could have replaced the boys' club that appears to dominate television movie criticism.

American Apparel Managers Told: Fire the Ugly People!

An American Apparel store manager sent Gawker an anonymous email claiming that controversial CEO Dov Charney was at it again.

The oft-sued Charney, this manager claimed, was demanding that underperforming AA stores send in photos of their sales staff to him so he could determine who wasn't good looking enough for the store. What would happen to these possibly hardworking folks who didn't enough resemble teenage Lolitas? Just guess:

"He made store managers across the country take group photos of their employees so that he could personally judge people based on looks. He is tightening the AA 'aesthetic,' and anyone that he deems not good-looking enough to work there, is encouraged to be fired."

If this allegation is proven, just wait for the lawsuits to roll in. (It's illegal, remember, to discriminate based on looks.) In the meantime, I guess I'm going to have to get my assless pantyhose from another purveyor. Perhaps the old school Frederick's of Hollywood?
