Awesome: A "Funny Face" Competition

Mom always threatened that a funny face will one day get stuck "that way." Well, she was wrong and these kids knew it. They kept it up, grew up, and took their skills straight to the historic Gurning Championship. The competition, which dates back to the 1200s and still takes place today, puts the most messed up mugs to the test. The most obnoxious face claims the title. As for making Mom proud, well . . .

It Might Get Stuck That Way, You Know

This dude is the four-time World Gurning Champion. What in Sam Hill is the World Gurning Championship, you ask. It's a competition in Egremont, Cumbria that dates back to 1267. Contestants are challenged to make their most grotesque faces while sticking their heads through a horse collar (random) and the audience applause determines a winner. The following photos are the runners-up in the competition. Perhaps I have high standards, but...I believe we've seen worse than this.

Funny or Scary? Skull Face Tattoo

This misguided youth from Montreal decided to tattoo a skull on his face as a tribute to the punk band Misfits. (I thought Canadians were famous for being normal? I guessed wrong). He works at a convenience store, which I imagine eliminates the need for store security. It must be really creepy to buy beer and cigarettes from this guy. Yikes. Giggle Girls, are face tattoos in general, and this skull face tattoo in particular:

Emma Thompson Tells Trafficked Woman's Story in Art

Academy-award winning actress Emma Thompson was so moved by the plight of a Moldovan woman who survived being trafficked for sex, she decided to create an art installation that would help viewers to put themselves in Elena's shoes and bring attention to this growing problem.

"Journey," which will be exhibited in New York City Nov. 10 to 16 in Washington Square Park, tells the story of Elena, a woman from the Eastern European republic of Moldova who, at age 18, was promised a secretarial job in England. Instead, once she got there, her passport was confiscated and she was forced into prostitution.

"Journey" consists of seven shipping containers. Each has a keyhole through which the viewer can peer to see a chronology of Elena's story. The first shipping container depicts Elena's childhood and the loss of her father. In another, the viewer can see Elena approached in a Moldovan marketplace and offered work.

Thompson personally curated one of the more disturbing of the shipping containers which depicts Elena's forced prostitution in England. She had Oscar-winning costume designer Sandy Powell design the clothes she was forced to wear, and when the viewer looks into the keyhole, she sees her face superimposed onto the body of a woman in prostitute's clothing. They wanted the viewer to have an experience of what it meant to lose one's identity. Thompson said that even men "didn't laugh or find it funny. They understood absolutely what it meant."

Thompson met Elena while doing work with UNODC (United Nations Office on Drug and Crime) to help raise awareness about the practice of trafficking women, and it sounds as if she's not only telling her plight, she's giving Elena the voice that was taken away from her. In the last shipping container, Elena tells her story on tape.

Meredith Vieira to Navy Pilot: "I'm an Old, Horny Woman"

Should Max Shuman of Virginia Beach, VA, want to file a sexual harassment charge against Who Wants to Be a Millionaire? guest host Meredith Vieira, he will have no trouble providing documentation to the authorities.

Unbeknownst to him, the young (and yes, incredibly hot) Navy pilot walked into a cougar's den of lust and inappropriate comments. You can actually watch the poor guy's face change from amused to slightly afraid as it becomes clear that Meredith is not going to stop ribbing him or making horrible double entendres. Sample dialogue: when the clearly rigged question "The childhood prank known as a wet willie involves putting a wet finger in someone's what?" comes up, Meredith says, "Anywhere you want to put it, Max." And that is but one example!

Down, Meredith, down!
