Ugly Fruit and Veggies No Longer Banned in Europe

In Brussels (the Belgian city, not the sprouts), EU officials have decided to lift the ban on crooked, bent, or twisted perfectly-edible fruit and vegetables. For the past 20 years, 100 pages of regulations have required that produce be uniform in appearance, and sold without any odd curves.

But not all fruit is exempt from standards of beauty - appearance regulations for apples, strawberries, citrus fruit, kiwi, lettuce, pears, peaches, nectarines, sweet peppers, table grapes, and tomatoes will still be on the books, although each country can decide whether they want to enforce them.

Produce sellers in a few countries, like Italy and France, worry that after the ban is gone, consumers will purchase less fruit and vegetables because they will be scared away by deformities. Even if you discriminate against ugly, yet edible, food, should the law be able to?

You have to admit, the whole Dracula thing really killed it for them. All bats do is hide in caves, sleep during the day, party at night, and suck some blood every now and then. Big deal. Most bats, like the little guy below, don't even go for blood; they'd much rather suck the life out of a piece of fruit. Take a look. Tell me this baby fruit bat isn't the most unconventionally cute thing you've ever seen . . .

The FruitCake Lady was no fruitcake, by any means. In fact, she made a number of guest appearances on The Tonight Show in a segment called, "Ask the FruitCake Lady." People asked questions and, given her 95 years of life experience, she had answers- take 'em or leave 'em. She was blunt, honest, and had no problem foreseeing the "ugly children" in your future. Did I also mention that she was hilarious?

Last time, The FruitCake Lady explained that she'd rather stay single because a 91-year-old man hasn't got "a damn thing" that she could possibly be interested in. This time- despite her own marital status, or lack thereof- she advises on how to manage one's mother-in-law and why merely "putting a bag over her head" simply won't do the trick. Folks, she's spectacularly fruity in this segment. Just watch.

How could you forget, right? Well, consider this a compilation of her greatest hits. And by "hits" I mean unsweetened, smart ass quips. While most other old ladies were busy baking cookies, the Fruitcake Lady was telling you where to shove them. She knew how to keep things fresh alright, which is why she'll forever be remembered.

Sex-Ed Pamphlets: An Orgasm a Day Keeps Doctor Away

Sex ed in the UK isn't all about STDs and birth control. A leaflet being handed out in schools by Britain's National Health Service hopes to educate students on the pleasures of sex.

With the slogan "an orgasm a day keeps the doctor away," the material reads:

Health promotion experts advocate five portions of fruit and veg a day and 30 minutes physical activity three times a week. What about sex or masturbation twice a week?

One of the officials behind the leaflet says that instead of encouraging teen sex, the message could prompt youth to delay having sex until they're sure they will enjoy it. Maybe with the failure of a teen pregnancy prevention program that actually increased the risk of pregnancy, Britain is ready to try just about anything when it comes to sex ed.

While encouraging daily sex might be a little extreme, I find the positive attitude toward sex refreshing and I hope it will encourage responsible and fulfilling practices among teens. What do you make of it?
