Flashback: Sam's Parisian Nightsuit on Freaks and Geeks

If you didn't notice from last week's Freaks and Geeks Flashback, my heart belongs to the little geeks on the show. In this can't-look-away, cringe-fest of an episode, Sam decides he wants to spiffy up his look, but he doesn't realize until he gets to school that his "Parisian nightsuit" is going to get him more attention than he bargained for. Poor Sam! (FYI-I get to see him and other original cast members at a Freaks and Geeks reunion at the San Francisco SketchFest this Sunday! Woot!)

The short-lived comedy/drama Freaks and Geeks (produced by Superbad's Judd Apatow) was television at its finest. Cancelled after only 12 episodes, it nevertheless developed a cult following. And what's not to love? It focused on the only truly interesting people in school, the ones not glorified in shows like Gossip Girl. (I'm talking about the weirdos.) In this episode, Sam (John Francis Daley) gets invited to a makeout party. This causes a stir among his geek friends-some are excited, others a little nauseated. Tune in for some hilarity. . .

Are You Attracted to Your Opposite?

You might scratch your head when you pass a beauty with a geek (or Paula Abdul with that cartoon cat), but genetics can help to explain the mismatched pairing.

A new study claims that people are subconsciously drawn to partners whose DNA is different from their own. Why? The diversification is most likely an evolutionary strategy; offspring tend to turn out better when there's a greater variety of DNA to choose from. In the case of a beauty and a geek, their kid would have a better chance of being hot and smart. (One can only imagine how cute Marilyn and Joe's children would have been!)

While scientists maintain that opposite genes are good for reproduction, untrained people have long claimed that two opposites can complement each other in a relationship. Everyone wins, for example, when one partner loves to cook, while the other one gets pleasure out of doing the dishes.

Are you attracted to your opposite? Have you ever been a Republican dating a Democrat, a slob dating a clean freak, a jock dating an unathletic partner, or an atheist dating a believer? Do certain "opposite" characteristics cross the line into deal-breaker territory?

James Franco Goes Apesh*t

In this spoof, James Franco gets all "method actor-y" in a pretend scene on the set of Knocked Up and he and annoyed director Judd Apatow start arguing. Apatow thinks that Franco is still sore that the television show he directed and Franco starred in ("Freaks and Geeks" ) was taken off the air. If that's the case, I feel your pain, man. "Freaks and Geeks" was awesome.

Do, Dump, or Marry?

Jason Segel first charmed me as dopey Nick on Freaks and Geeks before moving on to other regular-guy roles in Knocked Up and the sitcom How I Met Your Mother. Now he's trying his hand as a leading (funny) man in Forgetting Sarah Marshall.

Segel isn't a typical Hollywood hunk, but I think he's endearing. What about you: Would you do, dump, or marry Jason Segel?

Girl Crush of the Day: Leslie and the Lys

I saw this ~~woman~~ powerhouse of fabulousness perform last month, and lemme tell you, Leslie and the Lys do not disappoint. You gotta love a woman who composes rad lady jams and wears form-fitting gold suits with octopus shoulder pads on the outside. Her backup singers are amazing, her style is fierce, and she inspires freaks and geeks everywhere. Go Leslie!

Dear E. Jean--

I really need to know: is there any such thing as a truly good guy?? No matter what I do or how I try to change my patterns from the past, I just seem to keep attracting jerks over and over and over and over. I've tried dating against my type -- choosing a quiet, polite science nerd (he was a graduate student in microbiology) instead of my usual brooding artist type. He turned out to be a control freak, a liar, and had a violent temper! I am still recovering from the shock of discovering his true character. I didn't go on a single date for over a year, not trusting my own judgment.

Recently, I went on a few dates with a person who just seemed to exude "good guy" vibes--thoughtful, gentle, good listener--and just when I started to feel like he was really trustworthy, he invited me out with his friends and then spent the whole night ignoring me and blatantly flirting with some other girl right in front in me. I was not only crushed, I felt humiliated in front of his friends.

So, please tell me--is there such a thing as a TRULY nice guy?? And how can I tell the difference? I'm starting to feel like all other women know some secret about this that I don't.

MY YOUNG TROLLYMOG: No, my darling, there’s no such thing as a “truly nice guy.” As you’ve discovered, the moment you think you’ve found a nice chap, 99 times out of a 100 he’ll turn out to be a rogue, cad, dillweed, schnook, twit, drunkard, sadomasochist, lecher, pimp, nincompoop, egomaniac, zod, moron, mama’s boy, or jerkball. Stop looking for a “nice guy!” Gah!

Cease searching for a “type.” To hell with telling “the difference?”

It’s time to uncork your brain, open your eyes and sample all types -- shy boys, heroes, geniuses, poets, adventurers, daredevils, moguls, saints and scapegraces. Face down the dimwits. Go everywhere! Do everything! Be extraordinary, be celebrated, be a virtuoso of the male sex!

How? If you place yourself where there are high numbers of men, it becomes a mathematical certainty you will meet a non-dolt.

Where? Golf courses, cigar bars, batting cages, car shows, geek-meets, poetry slams, concerts, polo fields, rugby games, the gym, and church on Friday Night. (I like the men’s room at Yankee Stadium during the playoffs, myself.) Better yet, try a speed-dating event for young professionals; and dip your toe into Match.com.

Best of all, if you want to meet someone who’s passionate, bright, caring and shares your philosophy, volunteer with a political campaign. Not only your love life, but your country’s future is on the line.

Because in the end, it is not about “types,” sweetheart. The secret is--yes! There’s a secret--If you limit yourself to a certain category of men, you’ll end up with a categorical clod.
