I don't think I've ever received flowers and not loved them. I love tulips, roses, ranunculus - I'm not picky at all. OK, I'm not a fan of carnations, but even then. . .

Whether they're from a friend to say "thank you" or a significant other to say "I love you," flowers just make you feel better. And if no one's giving you flowers - get them for yourself!

Dear Poll: Do Flowers Make You Feel Better?

It's the season of long-stemmed roses and big bouquets, but my question is more about the flowers we sometimes get after a blowout argument or when our honey finds himself in the doghouse. While the gesture is very sweet, my wounds are only mended with time and understanding. It's possible that I'm in the minority on this one, so tell me, does getting flowers make you feel better?

How to Keep your Flowers Fresh

If you are lucky enough to have someone send you flowers at work, or stop by with a bouquet of your favorite lilies or Gerber daisies just because, you're going to want to keep them looking and smelling fresh and alive for as long as possible. Here are some tips to help keep your flowers in tip top shape!

The faster you put your flowers in water the better
Always cut the stems, preferably with a sharp ulcerated knife at an angle to expose the stems to water
Trim away any leaves that would be submerged in water once in the vase and if you are handling roses, make sure to leave the thorns on the stems as removing them will shorten their life span
Fill your vase as high as you can with lukewarm water for most flowers, but if you are handling bulbs such as tulips or daffodils, it is best to use cold water
Change the water in your vase every two to three days as opposed to simply adding more. This is the most important proactive measure to take in order to help keep your flowers living longer
When the florist gives you a packet of ingredients to add to your water, use it, as it is meant to offer "life support" to your flowers
It is best to keep your flowers out of direct sunlight and in a cool environment
When your flowers start to lose their luster, instead of giving up on all of them, rearrange then and throw out the dying flowers and move the live stems into a smaller vase

I hope these tips help the next time you are caring for flowers. One little trick to keep in mind, if you have tulips, drop a few pennies into the vase as the copper tends to keep the stems standing upright! And remember, you don't need to wait for someone to give you flowers; you can always buy them for yourself!

Does your husband or boyfriend only bring you flowers or little gifts when he's in the doghouse? Do those gifts leave you a little cold because they're a means to an end? While flowers with apologies are fine, I feel reminded of the issue every time I look at them!

And we experience overwhelming feelings of appreciation, love or respect for our significant other all the time, so why do we wait for a holiday or birthday to show them how we feel? The surprise of a "just because" gift always feels wildly thoughtful and special.

I hope I'm not telling you anything you don't already know, but most women love flowers. Eighty percent of people agree that a gift of flowers changes their mood for the better and, according to recent studies at the State University of New Jersey in Rutgers, flowers make you feel more satisfied with your overall life and help relieve mild depression. Sometimes it really is the little things that make a difference.

Fellas, think about sending flowers to your lady at work. Again, over 80% of people report real pleasure at receiving flowers unexpectedly. Besides, there's nothing like co-workers asking her about the occasion only to discover you sent them without one.

Spring is the perfect time to buy flowers. In case you need a little help choosing, here are a few tips:

Roses reign as the universal flower of love and a symbol of romance. Fellas, don't include the baby's breath. Just roses, just because, will do!
Gerber daisies make a nice choice, too. They're cheerful and bright, and symbolize beauty or innocence. Ask the florist to add the plastic tubes, as the stems do tend to bend.
For the Victorians, tulips represented perfect love. Today, we love their colors, streaks and ruffled petals. You can't go wrong with this elegant flower, but ask that the stems be cut short so there's not too much drooping.

It really does feel very special, fellas, receiving a gift for no special reason or for dozens of little, ordinary ones.
