Meet Bluey, the Transsexual Fish

Inquisitive, trusting, and friendly, New South Wales' favorite fish, the Blue Groper, has another trait that makes it special: the females can turn into males!

When a male Blue Groper dies, the largest and most dominant female will turn into a male fish to stabilize the population. "If you take a lot of males out," says Bob Harcourt, associate professor at Macquarie University, "then the females have to spend a lot of their time turning into males, which means they can’t breed and they can't lay eggs." This is getting to be a problem, because although they're protected, people are starting to overfish them illegally. Here's to hoping marine biologists figure out a way to protect Bluey and her/his kind!

This duckling is going to grow up to be some kind of Nobel Peace Prize winning critter. At this tender age, she's totally altruistic and feeding Koi fish one by one in a pond (where else?) in Japan. The fantastic, surreal, land of Japan.

The Fish 'n Flush Toilet Tank doubles as an aquarium. AquaOne Technologies, the folks behind this curiosity, worked with a marine biologist to make sure that in the course of flushing, no fish would be harmed. The Fish n' Flush, says their marketing director, was developed to serve "the dual purpose" of being "both a fully functional toilet and also a source of entertainment and conversation." Um, pardon me for being so conventional, but aren't conversations supposed to happen, say, in the drawing room or dining room? What are you supposed to do, gather your friends around the toilet? I imagine that would be a real conversation killer.

Introducing: The dark side of cute. This critter is not going to win any prizes at the fish beauty pageant. A fisherman in Turkey accidentally killed it because it scared him so. Now that's a defense if I ever heard one: "Your honor--I was forced to kill it, it was so ugly." It looks like any minute this fish is going to rise from the dead and kick some serious butt.
