This season of Project Runway is pretty much a one-man show starring Christian, the fiercest of the fierce. His hair is fierce, his ego is fierce, his models are fierce, his size eight (juniors) pants are fierce, and most of all, his talk is fierce. In fact, every other word is fierce. Like, literally fierce. (Thanks, Best Week Ever!)

Fierce at 50 and Beyond

We're told every day by the media that young starlets and teen models are the standard of beauty. But beauty is also wisdom, experience, intelligence and talent. Since we'll all hit 50 at some point (if we're lucky), it seems fitting to celebrate women 50 and beyond who radiate inner and outer beauty. After seeing the Huffington Post's recent feature on fabulous over 50 women, I decided to offer my own two cents.

Fiercest Little Runway Diva

I am both disturbed and impressed by little Diva Davanna, America's Next Tot Model. Talk about owning the runway and smiling with your eyes, legs, arms and, well . . . everything! How many of those gawky, insecure chicks on America's Next Top Model could sashay down the runway (in a freaking bubble, no less!) with this much ferocity and aplomb? Diva Davanna is going to rule the universe one way or another. We're just going to have to get out of her way. (I'm totally gonna practice that thing she does with her arms; I'm not sure on what occasion it could be useful, but it may come in handy somehow!)

Do You Have a Lot in Common With Your Siblings?

The Knowles sisters both looked fierce today in Japan, where they are promoting handbags for Disney. Beyonce and her younger sister Solange both like to sing, but they seem to rock different personal styles and public personas. For example, when Solange shaved her head last month, the Twitter-happy sister explained to her tweeps: "i. just. wanted. to. be. free. from. the. bondage. that. black. women sometimes. put. on. themselves. with. hair." (Punctuation hers.) And Beyonce says that she turns to her sister, who happens to be a mother, for lessons on life: "She gives me a lot of advice because she's had some life experiences that I've never had." When it comes to you and your siblings, are you mirror images of each other or more like exact opposites?

Three Adventurous Americans Missing in Iran

Next time you go traipsing around Iraq's Kurdistan, make sure you bring a map and stay far away from the Iranian border. Today, American diplomats with the help of Swiss officials are trying to locate three missing Americans who went hiking in Iraq's Kurdish region and accidentally crossed an unmarked border with Iran.

Iranian TV says the three have been accused of illegally entering Iran. The Swiss, who represent the US interests in Iran since there are no formal relations, met with officials in Tehran today, and Secretary of State Hillary Clinton gave reporters her two cents back in the US:

"We call on the Iranian government to help us determine the whereabouts of the three missing Americans and return them as quickly as possible."

The three missing hikers, who have lived in Western Europe and the Middle East, are being described by friends as "fiercely intellectual" individuals with "wanderlust for travel." I hope they get out of their latest adventure alive.

Fierce Flight Attendant

I have to admit, I hardly ever listen to flight attendants when they’re walking passengers through safety information. I think I’d take note, however, if this dude was announcing! Who could ignore the instruction to tighten your safety belt “like J-Lo’s pants” - that is, "low and tight across the hips!" Ha! This guy is hilarious.

Uncovered: Good Books Can Have Bad Covers

And, bad books can have bad covers, as Sarah Wendell and Candy Tan, the authors of Beyond Heaving Bosoms: The Smart B*tches' Guide to Romance Novels know too well. After years of rating romance novels on their blog Smart B*tches, Trashy Books, they understand all the embossing in the world can't make up for a bad romance.

Today's the last installment of our five-part series with Candy and Sarah. We asked them if there is any correlation between cover cheesiness and book quality, and got book recommendations for the Summer.

I was looking through books you rated Fs, and found the Gold Plated Garbage Truck. Looking at the cover, what were you expecting?

Sarah: One thing I've learned about romances is that the authors are not ever in control of their covers. Often they get no say and the cover is miles away from the content - bringing new meaning to, "No, really, we mean it - don't ever judge a book by its cover." Especially a romance novel.

One of the most evocative and powerful romances is Flowers from the Storm by Laura Kinsale, and the original cover has Fabio standing in a windstorm, holding out a handful of wildflowers with a truly bizarre expression on his face. Another book I enjoyed featured the biggest mullet I've ever seen coupled with a woman whose hair was so impossibly curly, I thought electroshock therapy was part of the plot.

With Gold Plated Garbage Truck, I figured there might be a crazy cover hiding a funny or silly plot, but, unfortunately, I was wrong.

Candy: You know, I've learned not to rely on romance covers to provide any kind of rubric of quality. At all. You know how you can surf the web, reading content, and somebody comments on something they see on the page you're on, and you're all "Whut?" and then you realize they're talking about the sidebar ads, which you have completely tuned out? Yeah. It's that way for me. I buy romance novels despite their covers, and I generally tune out the specifics of the covers. That said, the Gold-Plated Garbage Truck was a bit harder to ignore, because the self-identification and self-typing are too aggressive (another example would be Indian romances of a certain sort - usually ones involving savage brown men finding ever-loving bliss and fulfillment in some white chick's magic hoo-hoo). Seeing that book, I would've expected a book about a buncha losers, and going by Sarah's review, that's pretty much what it was.

For someone who wants to read a romance novel but is overwhelmed by the untamable options, where should she begin? To see their suggestions, read more.

If you like historical fiction, Loretta Chase's Lord of Scoundrels is incredible and has been held responsible for allowing even the most determined romance snob to rethink her position.

If you like funny contemporary books with incredible dialogue, Jennifer Crusie's Bet Me features a brave and authentic heroine and total hilarity.

If you like stories with paranormal elements, mythology and fierce intelligent women, look to the Norse mythology at work in Kresley Cole's Immortals After Dark series, especially No Rest For the Wicked. Or, Kelley Armstrong's Bitten, which is about a lone female werewolf living in hiding in Toronto.

Girl Crush du Jour: Marion Cotillard

Marion Cotillard blew me away as French icon and tortured chanteuse Edith Piaf in the biopic La Vie En Rose.

The talents behind her hair and makeup transformation deserve props, but Cotillard's fierce and wrenching portrayal of Piaf, particularly in her ravaged morphine addiction phase, totally earned her that Oscar. And . . . just look at her!

Someone Is Overanalyzing Beyonce's Lyrics

Beyonce's latest album, I Am Sasha Fierce has led Krayon Brooks (nice name!) to pause and analyze her ~~multifaceted personality~~ multiple personality disorder. One minute, she wants you to put a ring on it. In her last album, she was telling someone to put everything in a box and get out. So which is it? When she was in Destiny's Child, she sang a song called "Bills, Bills, Bills," and she wanted her dude to pay them all. But then in the soundtrack to Charlie's Angels, she says she's an independent woman. My favorite contradiction he points out is, "Do you want me to say your name? Or do you want me to shut up?" Krayon, you need to get out more!
