Man, looking at these vintage "chubby girl" clothing ads just makes me imagine the screaming matches that must've occurred between weight-obsessed mothers and their pissed-off "chubby" daughters back in the day. "Mother, if one more issue of that effing Pounds and Personality magazine comes into this house, I'm going to rip it apart page by page with my beefy limbs. Capisce?!" I think this poor child and Tracy Harper should've started a girl gang.

Dish! What Do You Make of the New Bromance Culture?

Something's a-brewin' in the world of masculinity. It's called the "bromance," and it's an attempt by straight men to be friends without being all gay about it. Unfortunately, it's kind of homophobic, and it's spawned an insulting credo, "Bros before hos," which pits girlfriends as the bromance's public enemy number one. Clearly, men have a yearning to be close, outside of a football field or war zone, so the idea of bromances is a step in the right direction. But do men have to be jerks and diss women and gay dudes in the process? (Incidentally, bromance culture has blown up in large part because of Judd Apatow, whose films, including Knocked Up, 40 Year Old Virgin, Superbad, and Pineapple Express, should have their own genre - the Brom-Com, or Bromantic Comedy.) So tell me, what do you make of the new bromance culture?

Steve Wood: Douchebag of the Day

Meet Steve Wood from VH1's groan-inducing new reality show Tough Love. He describes himself as a "master matchmaker" and says that you need him; I figure women need this guy like they need a hole in their heads. Describing single women with contempt as "desperate, delusional, and baby hungry," you'd have to be clinically insane to take this douche's advice. I'm pretty sick of this, "Hey, stupid woman, I'm going to insult you while pretending it's for your own good" trend in self-help. It's straight-up hatred, women. Don't take the bait! I bet he works in tandem with Mystery from The Pickup Artist who gives advice to players on how to play these women. Hint #1: Insult her - they like that!

Bad Vampire Men: Why Are They So Hot?

I love Sarah Haskins. She's reminding all of us crazy ladies who are in love with Edward Cullen/Rob Pattinson from Twilight that the dude is basically the classic bad boy, only, he's got fangs. "What if I'm not the hero," Edward asks Bella, "What if I'm the bad guy?" "Then I will totally sleep with you!" Sarah responds. So true, so true. (Make sure you watch until the end when one of Sarah's writers does a dramatic reading. Freaking hilarious, and he kinda looks like Pattinson, too!)

This awesome book, Hygiene for the Worker was written in 1912 and can be found on this amazing Internet book archives site. (Click on that link and it's like having the book in front of you - you can turn the pages and everything!) My favorite piece of advice for the worker involves how to handle women ~~on their periods~~ when they're being visited by "the curse." The following hilarious passage is from page 172. Interested? The hygiene manager of a modern factory or works will take into account only modern, scientific understandings of Female Biology. As a result, retiring rooms should be made available, where employees afflicted by The Curse during working hours can immure themselves. Such rooms should be equipt with a bell or horn, so inmates can signal the hygiene manager or his deputy, so they may signal a cab or ambulance to remove her from the workplace.

Wow. Can you imagine pulling that today? "Yo, manager, I got The Curse. Call me an ambulance, will ya?" I can't wait to flip through the rest of this! (Thanks, Boing Boing!)

Akiko, the Japanese woman behind Man Bra, provides a couple reasons for its invention, primarily the need that moobs-sporting men all over have to hitch up their moobies for a smoother look under those power suits. But this reporter sneaks in another reason at the end of this clip: Akiko thinks it will make men "gentler and more caring" once they know what women have to go through. What do you think?
