Obama's Star Power: Senator Leahy and Fall Out Boy?

What do you get when you cross Senator Patrick Leahy with rocker Pete Wentz? A very strange combo of endorsements for Barack Obama. Joining a star-studded list that includes Oprah and Scarlett Johansson, Senator Patrick Leahy (D-VT), chairman of the judiciary committee, (a senatorial-equivalent rock star,) announced his endorsement of Obama today.

Next Tuesday, Fall Out Boy's Pete Wentz is hosting his own fund-raiser for Obama in his home state of Illinois. With guyliner or without, this rocker (who considers himself both "liberal," and "apolitical,") tossed his support to the candidate. Though according to MTV, Pete considers Obama a fall-back choice:

"To find a candidate that I completely agreed with, I'd have to run myself. And I'm not sure people would be ready for tax-free ice cream and 'Macho Man' Randy Savage as the secretary of state."

During Fall Out Boy's Madison Square Garden concert over the weekend, Pete Wentz officially laid down the flat iron and sounded the death knell heard 'round high schools everywhere: "This is the death of the Emo haircut," he proclaimed, before Blink-182 bassist Mark Hoppus shaved off the stick-straight strands that have been his trademark for a while.

Some find the singer and husband of Ashlee hot because of his hair, others in spite of it. Regardless of what his head looks like now, what about the man underneath the mop?

Why Do Some Women Prey on Boys?

Another day, another news story about a woman getting sexually involved with a teen. This time, a babysitter has been arrested on charges of molesting a 14-year-old boy who was in her care a couple years ago.

Summer Nelson, 28, of Post Falls, ID, was friends with the boy's mother and babysat him and his younger siblings. Nelson began to have sexual relations with the boy, even telling his siblings she was in love with him.

We routinely hear about men's pedophilic sex crimes, and it's still shocking to hear about female perpetrators of sex crimes even though women commit the crime in fewer numbers. Why do they do it, and does the sexual abuse affect boys any differently than it affects girls who are sexually abused? To find out, read more.

"These women are psychologically not much older than their victims," says Richard Gartner, a New York psychologist and author of Betrayed as Boys. "They're attracted to kids they can handle."

Women who have sex with minors often feel socially and sexually inadequate, says Susan Strickland, a forensic social worker in Atlanta. One woman, who received 30 years for plying her daughter's underage teen friends with alcohol and having sex with them, told police that it was the first time she'd felt popular and part of a group.

Abusers often come from strange families with few boundaries. Women who molest prepubescent kids, especially, were more than likely sexually abused or traumatized as kids themselves. Whether consciously or not, abusing minors may be a way to regain the power the women lost when they were abused.

And what about abused boys? Although we live in a culture that tells boys that they should never turn down sex, or that it is a fantasy for a sexier older woman to want to have sex with them, this makes the trauma even harder to handle. They end up having trouble developing age-appropriate relationships and, as adults, they're more likely to be depressed, anxious, and addicted to drugs, pornography, or casual sex.

Plotless Porn Wins the Day

I’m not a big porn-watcher, but if I did watch porn, I wouldn’t watch it for the plot. (I’m kinda like a dude that way.)

Well, it turns out if I started watching porn now, I’d be in luck. The pendulum has swung back to plotless porn, in part due to competition from the Internet, where porn scenes are short, relatively plotless and dialogueless, and which cut to the action more quickly. “On the Internet, the average attention span is three to five minutes,” said Steven Hirsch, co-chairman of Vivid Entertainment. “We have to cater to that.”

In the ‘70s, during the so-called golden age of porn, when actresses still had pubic hair and actors sported porn ‘staches, movies like Behind the Green Door were practically feature films - only with lots of sex. Then cheap, hand-held video cameras ushered in a generation of pornographers who bypassed plot so that the leading lady could quickly get down and dirty with the pool boy. Plot rolled back into porn the ‘90s with the popularity of DVDs. Big studios, said Paul Fishbein of AVN Media Network, wanted to appeal to women, hoping that couples would watch the films at home.

But we’re back again to plotless porn. What’s replaced plot? Themes, like New Sensations’ Girls ‘n Glasses, which stitches together scenes of women having sex in their glasses. Porn actress Savanna Samson laments the falling away of plot. “I used to have dialogue,” she said, and used to get excited about scripts. “Getting it on in one hardcore scene after another," she continues, "just isn’t as much fun."

Dear Perplexed Penelope,

This question makes me laugh. The longer I live, the more I realize how similar men and women truly are. Boys and Girls may go about things differently and often appear to speak different languages, but in the end, we have more similarities in what we like and don't like than differences. After all, we're both human and us "beings" are almost identical. That's super good news - if you're paying attention. Moreover, women are the founding fathers - errr mothers - of the "tease" and isn't a man flirting - yet unavailable - just being a tease? You know, like when a girl walks into a bar flaunting major cleavage, a super short skirt, and playing with her hair yet doesn't have the slightest intention of having sex with any of us. Isn't Flirt Boy just doing what women have done for hundreds of years?

Teasing is one of the things men and women differ in; men can tease you by pulling your hair, but women tease on a much more visceral level, right down to the loins. Men don't tease. If we weren't so horny all the time maybe we would, but we are so we can't. Teasing implies we could actually "hold out" if you showed us you wanted to have sex. Very few of us can.

The Male Facts when it comes to flirting while in a relationship:

We do it because we enjoy the art of flirting
We do it because we're smart and know you have to keep the engine warm in case things fall apart with the current flame.
It's an ego boost when women respond
It helps us have a reality check to make sure "we still got it".
It's naughty and mischievous (obsessions any man, worth his salt, will not lose with age). It's like playing with fire because we know we have to be loyal, but it allows us to fantasize with the "what if".

The Female Solution:

Don't just talk to a man because you want a man. That's too cut and dry. Talk to him because you want to enjoy the person, enjoy the opposite sex, learn something that you can utilize when the right one comes along - Stop boyfriend/husband hunting.

Gender Bending: Are Girls & Boys More Alike Than We Think?

I've always thought that gender is more of a sliding scale than a binary choice - you're not just one or the other, but that everyone falls somewhere in the spectrum between fairy princesses and Hulk Hogan. It's a snips, snails, and puppydog tails day in the news - gender, and our perception of it, is hot.

Ever wanted to know what gender your computer thinks you are? With a tiny click you can find out what your browser history says about your skirt or pant-wearing habits (gross generalization, noted.) Using data from the web demographic wizard Quantcast, the tricky program will analyze you in a second. Perhaps proving my sliding scale theory (apologies to the scientific theory) I scored 50 percent male and 50 percent female. How about you?

A school in rural Thailand discovered that a full 10 percent of the boys consider themselves to be transsexuals, and are uncomfortable with using the boys' bathroom. The solution? A third-sex toilet was installed to serve the middle of the spectrum population. I'm sure you're wondering - the little picture on the door is split down the middle, half boy, half girl.
The Olympics gender-testing is underway. A throw-back to the 1960s when (gasp!) women athletes had to parade naked in front of judges to prove their girlihood. It's a scientifically dicey practice, as some women do test more masculine than others due to a chromosomal birth defect. The tests have never uncovered a gender switcheroo, but one case in the modern Olympics exists. In 1936 a German athlete was forced by the Nazis to compete as a woman. He/she scored fourth.

Maybe like the US is embracing the purple-state from the melding of red and blue, gender is moving lavender from the girlie pink and the little boy blue? Is that some sugar, spice, and everything nice?

Day 1: Here's What We're Checking Out at the Convention

Good morning politics fans! We're up bright and early and raring to go - the convention is a like a politico's Olympics and Super Bowl all rolled into one, and we have big plans today:

We have an interview with Tom Sheridan, an expert on celebrity activism.
Morgan Spurlock is giving a Q&A on Where in the World is Osama bin Laden.
We're checking out the Google and Huffington Post "retreats" for political bloggers. After all even the New York Times says this is the year of the blogger.
Nancy Pelosi, Michelle Obama, Jimmy Carter - and I hear rumors of a live appearance by Ted Kennedy - are all speaking tonight on the convention floor.
Rock the Vote's Ballot Bash featuring Fall Out Boy is tonight
Planned Parenthood is hosting a "Sex and Politics" cocktail party that we hear Aisha Tyler and Ashley Judd will be attending.

Check back as the day goes on and we'll keep you updated you on our adventures! Oh and those tornadoes that hit Denver as soon as the convention opened? I'm sure that wasn't a sign. . . right?

Tale of Two Concerts: Taylor, Bennett, and Rock the Vote

This couldn't have been a more surreal pairing last night - within the span of 20 minutes we saw James Taylor sing "You've Got a Friend," Tony Bennett sing, "I Left My Heart in San Francisco," and sing a duet together, which was awesome and warranted the held-up cell phone for my mom and then! We headed over to the Rock the Vote concert featuring Fall Out Boy for a whole different scene.

From fancy appetizers and mingling at the James Taylor show (it was an event in honor of Speaker Nancy Pelosi) where Rep. Charlie Rangel was working crowd control with his pretty impressive whistle (Seriously. It stopped people's cocktail chatter dead) to the crazy DJ/laser show/MTV crowd at Rock the Vote, I bet even Buzz's musical sensibilities would have had whiplash.

At Rock the Vote they had you text in why you think it's important to vote, which I did, saying that I wanted John McCain to be my next president (and apparently I got what they thought I deserved as I'm now signed up for some sort of update/alert service. Sigh.) It was awesome and like a crazy dream, and we're still both totally sleep deprived - but hey, if Nancy Pelosi can party like a rock star, well, I'll see if I can keep up.
