Little Girl Questions the Fairytale Ending

Drop Dead Fred, a wickedly immature comedy about maintaining imaginary friends into adulthood and blaming "them" for one's obscene behavior, was one of my fave movies in the early '90s - naturally. The irreverent tyke in the following scene portrays the protagonist as a young girl. Her response to her mother's lame-ass bedtime story is quite possibly the best advice any growing girl (or grown woman) could ever hear. Listen. Very. Carefully.

While I was watching some dude sing about the day his wife met his girlfriend and all the marital strife that followed, I happened to notice the following advertisement pop up at the bottom of the vid for - prepare yourself - AffairMatch.com. This married personals site prides itself on being a "discreet sanctuary for lonely wives and cheating husbands." Ahem, running banner ads all over the net isn't exactly what I'd call "discreet," but this site isn't in the business of upholding promises anyway. So much for that fairy-tale ending . . .

Did Hugo Chavez Call Bio-Diesel Lover Sean Penn a Criminal?

In the ever complicated environmental tussle between clean fuel and responsible use of resources the differing opinions over the use of biofuels has produced an interesting contrast of ideas - fueled by Ethanol.

Sean Penn, actor/activist has just initiated a cross-country trek using a fleet of biodiesel buses carrying about 300 people that will burn the corn fuel for 1,800 miles from the Coachella Valley Music & Arts Festival and ending in New Orleans for the annual jazz festival. Penn appeared twice yesterday at Coachella. He said of the trip, "I see this as a reckoning. My generation and those that came before have to recognize the numbing of incentive that we've passed on to the change hungry, imaginative, smarter than us youth of today." Penn might mean well running his trip on corn, but he may have created an unlikely opponent. On the other side of the biodiesel debate is Venezuelan President, Hugo Chavez who claims that “a US push to boost ethanol production during a world food crisis is a crime.”

Chavez also said that “the corn needed to fill an average car with ethanol would be enough to feed seven people for a year.” Venezuela is putting their corn where their mouth is, and will donate more than 385 tons to food to Haiti to help ease the suffering since the food shortages toppled their government.

Is Penn taking corn out of the mouths of the hungry while on his journey to try to inspire change and "encourage individuals to take individual actions"? Do you think biofuels are responsible for the current food crisis? Are they the answer to cleaner and renewable fuels, or just an eco-fairytale?

You Asked: Why Am I Looking Back?

Dear Sugar,

I'm 21 and about to graduate college, unsure of what's next. I've been planning to move to New York to find a job in publishing (like every other English major), and my boyfriend (who graduated last year, who I've been dating for about 14 months) is looking for an apartment there as well, though we are not planning on living together.

Lately I've been thinking a lot about my old high school boyfriend - the one I dumped on a whim right before leaving for college. I spoke to him briefly about six months ago and I really missed him, except I don't know whether I miss him or the idea of him. I know this sounds crazy, but should I try getting back in touch with him? Is it worth pursuing, or am I so brainwashed by romantic comedies that I'm ignoring reality? This isn't the first time I've missed him, but I'm confused how my feelings play into my current relationship. Is this a sign that things aren't working out? My boyfriend is sweet and so loving, and we have a lot of fun together, but we've also been fighting a lot, and I can't get my ex out of my head. - Old Love Lilly

Graduating from college and making your first step into the adult world can be very overwhelming, and it's not uncommon for people to hold onto their pasts for security. Sure, romantic comediess make reuniting with an old love seem like the perfect fairytale ending, but sometimes that's not very realistic. If you can't get this guy out of your head, I say reach out to him. Find out if it's the thought of him that's making you doubt your future or if there's really something there, but realize this could end up hurting your current relationship.

The fact that you're fighting with your boyfriend shouldn't make you run - remember a little fighting is perfectly normal. Put your situation in context - you're moving, you're graduating from college, and you're trying to start your career. Those are three major life changing events, so it's no wonder you're a little unsettled. Try not to read too far into things right now but at the same time, listen to your instincts. I wish you luck.

Man Falls Down Elevator Shaft and Lands on Woman Who Fell Down the Previous Day

It sounds like the beginning of a fairytale love story, no? Lady falls 25 feet down an elevator shaft and lays there unconscious until her knight in shining armor falls down the same shaft 24 hours later and - d'oh! - saves her life. The shaft was undergoing repairs. These two were curious and stepped closer to (and then off) the ledge to get a look at the work in progress below. Both parties survived the fall with injuries, but only cuz they had each other. Let's hope for speedy recoveries so Cupid's work doesn't go to waste! For more on the story, read here.

Debate Rebate: Does This Mean Hillary Won?

Warning! What follows is purely opinion. I'm sure there are quite a few out there who will disagree . . . Let us know, won't you?

Citizen: There's a fairytale that tells the story of a leader who is so taken with the creation of his own image, and his supporters are so equally under his spell, that they'll let him walk around naked, rather than disavow him of the idea that he's wearing a beautiful suit of silken threads. That story haunted me last night.

My mission last night was to watch Barack Obama. (Liberty and I each picked a candidate we weren't voting for, to try to glean a little perspective.) And I tried. Oh, lord did I try. In the harsh light of day, even while the replay of the debate flickers in my face, I'm left empty. I'm not entirely convinced that Obama's continual refrain of "I agree with Senator Clinton" is the basis for a strong case for nomination.

And I admit: I peeked. I paid rapt attention to every detailed, feasible plan Hillary laid forth. Her unflappable competence was more compelling to me than a truckload of platitudes. I listened to Hillary, and though my vote isn't hers, I agree with and apply this, her final sentiment from last night: If Hillary is elected, we will be fine. America will be fine.

After the convention, if Obama walks away with the nomination, I fear his candidacy will be the ultimate political embodiment of The Emperor's New Clothes. His beautiful words nothing but a transparent silken suit, his followers left to choose a man naked of plan and experience because, well, he just looked so darn good on the rack.

Liberty: So, the big Xerox comment . . . Meh? I don't feel as heated as some about the whole "plagiarizing" debate. I assume that an army of advisers and speech writers are contributing to each candidate's material. Did Hillary write the Xerox comment herself? Given the uncomfortable delivery of the YouTube follow-up, it's doubtful. I know it's different than Obama pulling complete passages, but come on - the "silly season" comment stands. Is this the kind of stuff Americans care about?

But now that it's the reigning soundbite, Hillary should use the attention the Xerox zinger got to drive home the idea that Obama lacks substance. Clinton's ability to express distilled yet comprehensive plans that will address specific problems seriously impressed me.

Overall, I left wanting more. Nothing new came out. I know they disagree about a healthcare mandate. I know Barack was against the war, and Hillary voted for it. My parting sentiment mirrored that of Hillary's - My vote has already been cast, it's almost over, and I just hope that whatever happens, as a nation, we will soon roll up our sleeves and start solving problems.
