What's the Big Idea Behind This Sneaky Gatorade Ad?

I watched the following vid and was overjoyed to see a chick finally kick arse at a male sporting event. But a little research later revealed that our bat girl never made this Spidey-inspired catch; the vid is actually a staged advertisement for Gatorade. The illegitimacy of the play makes me wonder if the Gatorade folks are mocking women's athletic potential with this ad, or on the flip side, if they're seeking to unsettle established gender norms and advance the girls-can-do-anything message. Or a bit a both? Tell me what you think.

All Dunk, No Slam

I'm not a huge sports fan, but if basketball was played this way, then I might pay a little more attention to it. How many ways can one dunk a basketball? Apparently many. From the skateboard smack to the close-fisted punch to the rooftop toss, these big ballers got some serious game! If they ever played for reals, I'd definitely be in the stands (not doing this) to show my support.

New Sport: Extreme Streaking

You just gotta love streakers. They sacrifice their very dignity to give fans a comedic respite from the stressful shouting demands of sitting in the stands. It's a damn dirty job, but some freak's gotta do it. And this particular freak makes a singing-cartwheeling-hurdle jumping event of it! (And the scarf was a nice touch.)

Dear Sugar,

The woman I've been dating for the past eight months is great, and I have strong feelings for her, but she says she is frustrated and tired of trying to figure out what we can do together. You see, I was a good athlete when I was younger but I have a bad knee and can only hike for about an hour. I also have a bad back now so can't lift a lot. She loves to mountain bike and hike mountains, kayak and cross country ski and I can do only short durations of those things. She refuses to try less strenuous activities as she says the extreme sports is what "makes" her.

I've told her that I would love to do all those things as I used to, but I just can't anymore. In response, she wants to know why we should stay together, since she figures it just won't work. I care for her deeply and don't want to let her go. Any suggestions as to whether I should give up or is there hope for us?

Dear Can't Keep Up Kurt,

It sounds like you are making an effort to do what she wants to do, but she isn't making any effort to do what you want to do. Plus it's not that you don't want to do these athletic things with her, you physically can't. She's not being understanding or sensitive to your needs and limitations whatsoever, and that worries me. This relationship seems a little one-sided, and it's hard to make it work if one person is putting forth all the effort.

Many couples don't do everything together all the time, so you've got to find a way to compromise. Maybe once a week, you guys do an hour long hike or kayak together. Then she can take it to a more extreme level on her own at other times during the week. Or you can do exercise together that's more gentle on your back and knees like swimming or yoga. You can also find other non-physical things you guys can do together like cook, watch movies, and play music.

If you guys love each other, part of that is supporting each other's needs. Talk about how you can make this work. As long as you're both willing to try, you won't have any regrets and if it's meant to be, it will all work out. Good luck!

What's the opposite of "Extreme Sports"?

More than 500 top players from around world the came to Toronto this weekend to compete for a $8,840 prize and the title of world champion in...a Rock, Paper, Scissors tournament.

What with ESPN featuring competitive eating as an actual sports category, it shouldn't surprise me that this exists. Still, am I missing something here? Is there a "thrill of victory, and agony of defeat" component to this? Giggle Girls, discuss.

I have been dating a great guy for about a month and a half, but we have only gone on four dates. We always have a great time together, we have wonderful conversations, and we have a lot in common, but he is extremely busy. He volunteers several times a week, plays sports, and has a very demanding job that usually results in him working late hours and weekends. It's never too soon to have a talk with someone you're dating, especially if you're unsure about the way he feels about you. Four dates in a month and a half isn't a lot, and I'd probably have the same fears as you do, so I advise you to get to the bottom of this relationship ASAP. If he is just a busy guy, you need to decide if the time he's able to give you is enough to make you happy. But if it turns out that he's continuing to see you simply out of courtesy, I'd end it before you waste any more of each other's time. Good luck to you!
