The Word "Fiancé": Love It or Leave It?

A friend of mine recently got engaged but shudders at using the word "fiancé" to refer to her affianced. It feels more natural to say "boyfriend" when talking about her husband-to-be. I propose that she go with something intentionally hokey, like "my intended." How do you feel about using the word fiancé?

Big News! Archie Proposes to Veronica

Well, Betty already spilled the beans on her blog, but today we'll get to read how it all goes down when Archie Marries Veronica: "The Proposal" hits comic book stores.

That's right: one of the world's most comically long love triangles is coming to an end with the latest issue of Archie comics, which will be the first in a six-part wedding series. For more than 60 years, the endearing Archie character has gone back and forth between perky blond Betty and sophisticated, dark-haired Veronica, to whom he finally pops the question. But as the creators point out, a six-book series leaves room for plot twists.

Did you read the Archie and Betty & Veronica comics as a kid? I'll admit I was always a Veronica girl. Do you think Archie is making the right choice?

Awkward! Reusing a Ring Designed For a Previous Engagement

An engagement ring has so much symbolic value that people often get a little obsessed with its design, cost, and the method in which it's presented. A reader writes in with the following question:

"I was previously engaged and the engagement was broken. The ring that I wore was one that I designed with my mother and grandmother to become a family heirloom and was purchased by my family. My ex had nothing to do with the picking out or paying for the ring.

I am now in a relationship with someone else and we have been discussing marriage. He knows about the ring that my mother now has and has no objection to giving it to me if we were to get engaged. We have also discussed getting it engraved or adding a band to it. Is it tacky to 'reuse' this ring?"

What do you think - is it OK for her to reuse this ring? Any engagement ring sagas to share?

Does a Ring on That Finger Only Mean One Thing?

Since I'm neither married nor engaged, I've never thought twice about wearing a ring on my left-hand ring finger, especially a big, chunky ring that's a far cry from a solitaire diamond. But a few weeks ago, I was at a party, and some dude spotted one of the big, chunky rings in question and asked, "Are you engaged?" I wanted to answer, "um, yeah . . . to a clown."

Wedding rings are super-traditional, but they are a handy way to tell if people are attached or not. However, until you're betrothed, I say wear any ol' ring you want. Do you agree, or do you prefer to leave that finger blank until it's loaded with something symbolic?

A Do or a Don't: Public Proposals

Getting engaged is a very special right of passage between two people who love each other, and choosing where to take that next step in your relationship is something that usually takes a lot of thought and planning. When the time comes for me to get engaged, I'd want my boyfriend to ask me someplace private so we can share that intimate moment together, just the two of us, but I know that some women really enjoy a more public profession of love. No one way is better than the other, so tell me, do you think public proposals are a do or a don't?

The Dos and Don'ts of Getting Engaged

Hearing other people's engagement stories is sure to get some of you excited for your own engagement, but if you're waiting for your man to get down on bended knee, it's important to be sure that you're both ready to take that next step in your relationship. So before taking the plunge, be sure to check out my dos and don'ts of getting engaged.

Don't

Do be sure you're getting engaged for the right reasons, not just because you feel like it should be the next step in your relationship.
Do be sure you're on the same page in your relationship and that you're truly in love.
Do be sure you're in agreement about kids, money, how to fight, family, religious beliefs, education, in-laws, etc.
Do be sure you're emotionally and physically satisfied in your relationship.

Don't pressure him to propose if he's not ready. A premature engagement could lead to trouble down the road.
Don't get engaged if you're not financially stable - weddings and everything that comes along with them are expensive.
Don't think an engagement will fix your relationships problems; be sure to talk through all your issues first.
Don't rush down the aisle if you still have some things to work through. Sometimes a long engagement is best.

Where Do You Stand? Choosing a Ring Together

Generally speaking, most women know when a proposal is on its way - they may not know the time or the place, but they can usually sense it. And since that step is such a big one, some women like to be in on it, especially when it comes to the ring! But if you shop for it together, the cat's out of the bag and then it just becomes a waiting game. I'm torn on this one, because while I wouldn't want to be unpleasantly surprised, I wouldn't want to know what to expect either. So what about you? The Perils of Proposing on the Brooklyn Bridge

It's wedding season again, and you know what that means: lots of botched proposals and bad wedding fashion! Just in time comes this story of a dude who orchestrated a dramatic proposal to his girlfriend on the Brooklyn Bridge, then promptly dropped the pricey diamond ring off the side of the span. Bummer!

Thankfully, the story has a happy ending:

But he valiantly shimmied down to the lower span - where car traffic travels - and found the bauble. It was slightly bent, but the diamonds were still in place.
