Should Young Kids Be Taught About the Risk of HIV/AIDS?

Elton John's AIDS Foundation spreads the message of AIDS prevention with the hope of stopping the spread of the disease. In a new interview with CNN, Elton says that the US has something to learn from Africa when it comes to preventative education. If schools systematically taught American kids about the risk of HIV at a young age, a majority of citizens would know how to protect themselves by the time they became sexually active. Elton explains:

"We find that if we could get into the schools at a grass-roots levels, which we do in places like Africa where we get to kids at a young age and we tell them about preventive measures for not getting HIV, we find the success rate is tremendous."

Not everyone supports AIDS education in schools, however. Some believe it should be up to parents to teach children about sex or that the subject matter is inappropriate for innocent youth. What do you think?

Elton John Violating US Election Laws?

Sir Elton John plans on performing a fundraising concert for Hillary Clinton next month. I even got an email invite from Hillary herself. Unfortunately, the whole concert idea might be on the wrong side of the law.

The Federal Election Campaign Act (FECA) prohibits:

"Any foreign national from contributing, donating or spending funds in connection with any federal, state, or local election in the United States, either directly or indirectly. It is also unlawful to help foreign nationals violate that ban or to solicit, receive or accept contributions or donations from them. Persons who knowingly and willfully engage in these activities may be subject to fines and/or imprisonment."

Uh oh. Are they going to Cage the Songbird? Not likely, says Camp Clinton. Hillary's campaign maintains that foreigners are allowed to volunteer on an uncompensated basis.

Do you think the concert amounts to donating funds indirectly? Or do Elton and Hillary have their Hearts in the Right Place?

He's given oven instructions(!) and manages--on the spot--to come up with a delightful little ditty using the words as lyrics. Elton has more talent in his pinky than most acts today have in their entire bodies. Now if he could just do something about that awful hairpiece...

Former Miss California Carrie Prejean has landed a book deal with Regnery, the "leading conservative publisher in America." The title? Still Standing, which I can only assume is inspired by gay-married Sir Elton John's song "I'm Still Standing."

Carrie caused controversy earlier this year when she publicly denounced same-sex marriage in favor of opposite marriage during the Miss USA pageant. She was later dethroned for being unwilling to fulfill "contractual obligations." Here's another contractual obligation she now has: her book will be published in November. That gives her about, oh, six weeks to write it.

Don't Look Now! Both Campaigns Take Money From Foreigners

Back when Elton John put on a concert for Hillary Clinton, we learned that presidential candidates cannot take money from foreign donors. But Barack Obama and John McCain won't let a silly rule get in the way of their fundraising momentum. A little investigating by the Associated Press revealed that both candidates accept overseas money, saving the crucial details for later.

Out of 123 overseas donors interviewed, only five said that either the McCain or Obama camp asked to see their passports as required by the FEC. In addition, three non-citizens had successfully donated to Obama. One Canadian Obama fan even wrote a note with his donation that said, "I am not an American citizen!" The contribution (and the note!) got entered into Obama's records. To see how other foreign money sneaks in, read more.

Other donors take a sneaky approach, entering fake passport numbers when they give online. After the AP uncovered the errors, the Obama campaign said it would return the money.

Hoping to ward off foreign influence, campaign finance laws allow candidates to accept contributions only from citizens or green card holders. But the sheer amount of donors makes it difficult for the candidates to follow the letter of that law. McCain's camp admits it's unfeasible to ask overseas web-donors to send copies of their passports. Should the official policy adopt the "honor system" routine practiced by both candidates?

Would You Open A Door For Elton?

What is a polite distance? It's the distance between two people compelling one to politely hold a door open for the other. Yes, another useless study was performed to determine the exact measurement of a polite distance. It all sounded legit until the variables of "attractiveness" and "phantom politeness" were introduced. And then with the mention of Elton John, the study went completely downhill-- all the way to downright rude! (I'd definitely hold open a door for Sir Elton!)

Pansy-Gate? Is the Campaign Scrutiny Getting Ridiculous?

Hillary Clinton received a key endorsement yesterday from North Carolina Gov. Mike Easley. The governor delivered his statement in a casual, jokesy kind of way, saying at one point there's "nothing I love more than a strong powerful woman." And then the floral word heard round the world: pansy. Easley wrapped up his campaign high-five saying this:

"I've been accused of being persistent and downright aggravating. But this lady right here makes Rocky Balboa look like a pansy."

Oops. Right? Reaction to the word was immediate. The editor of the blog Queerty, heard a slur, and worse - no response from Clinton. “Considering the Senator’s silence, we get the impression that she simply doesn’t care. And this is a gay ally?”

Everyone's been dusting off and cracking open the dictionaries. Is pansy really just a slur for a gay man? Or has a modern usage developed? Response on the Queerty blog seemed to think so:

Pansy when referring to a straight male boxer means weak and timid. Pansy when referring to Elton John means effeminate gay man. It's about context people and we are not so important that we need to inject our cause into every sentence that comes out of everyone’s mouth.

Is the clamor over the definition of one word, a sign that attention to campaign minutiae is out of control? Was the statement a real slap at the gay community? Should Clinton have responded? Do people even say "pansy" anymore?

Or should the real gay rights story of the day be the fact that the Australian government has just announced plans to remove about 100 laws it says discriminate against gay couples? Are we losing sight of what's important?
