President-Elect Barack Obama Promises: Yes We Can

President-elect Barack Obama greeted the world from Chicago's Grant Park tonight, outlining the historic nature of his presidency and the many challenges that lay ahead. After thanking John McCain, running mate and VP-elect Joe Biden, his family and his campaign, he said his victory belongs to the people.

"Change has come to America. If there is anyone out there who still doubts that America is a place where all things are possible. Who still wonders if the dream of our founders is alive in our time, who still questions the power of our democracy, tonight is your answer.

The road ahead will be long, our climb will be steep, we may not get there in one year or even in one term, but America, I have never been more hopeful than I am tonight that we will get there. I promise you. We as a people will get there."

Obama went on to say there would be setbacks and false starts, but that he will rebuild America with the help of the nation, "block by block, brick by brick, calloused hand by calloused hand." He ended with a passionate "Yes we can." What did you think of Obama's first speech as president?

John McCain Concedes, Offers Support to Obama

John McCain conceded less than 30 minutes after polls closed on the West Coast tonight, saying he had already called Senator Barack Obama to congratulate him on his historic win. In a speech made to his supporters in Arizona, McCain expressed his sympathies that Obama's grandmother did not live to see her grandson elected and offered goodwill to the president elect.

Senator Obama and I have had and argued our differences and he has prevailed. No doubt many of those differences remain. These are difficult times for our country and I pledge to him tonight to do all in my power to help and lead us through the many challenges we face. I urge all Americans who supported me to join me in not just congratulating him, but offering our next President our good will and earnest effort to find ways to come together.

McCain went on to tell supporters it is "natural to feel some disappointment. Though we fell short, the failure is mine, not yours." Love him or hate him, what did you think of McCain's speech?

Barack Obama Elected President!

Barack Obama took the presidency tonight after breakthrough wins in Ohio and Virginia. At 8 p.m. PST, as soon as the polls closed in California, Oregon and Washington, the networks called the election of President Barack Obama. Republican candidate John McCain suffered losses in Ohio, the state that narrowly gave President George W. Bush victory in 2004, but also in key states like Pennsylvania, Iowa and New Mexico.

There are a number of Senate seats that have not yet been decided, and we will keep on top of that, but for now congratulations to the Democrats and Barack Obama, the 44th President of the United States.

Barack Obama Takes Pennsylvania

The night is still early, but NBC is saying Barack Obama has started off with a lead in the Electoral College by winning Pennsylvania. Both parties targeted the so-called "Keystone State" as crucial to winning the race, along with large Eastern and Midwestern states like Florida and Missouri.

It's projected that Obama also won Massachusetts, New Jersey, and his home state of Illinois.

Mark Warner Wins Virginia Senate Seat

Virginians have elected ex-Governor Mark Warner as their newest senator. The once red state has become pretty blue. Virginia now has two Democratic senators and a Democrat in the governor's mansion. Soon we will see what the Old Dominion has to say about the next president of the United States.

When Will We Know the Winner? Key Toss-ups to Watch

While Americans exercise their right to vote, you can get prepared for the results. Sadly, we won't have Tim Russert to walk us through it all this year. Barack Obama supporters can start feeling relieved if their candidate wins either Ohio, Virginia, North Carolina, or Florida. Conversely, a magic combination of wins for John McCain could include Pennsylvania, Ohio, and Florida. Here are the states you should keep an eye on:

Indiana: The nation's first polls begin to close in typically red Indiana at 6 p.m. EST. If Obama wins the 11 electoral votes, things won't look good for McCain.
Virginia: McCain's most practical path to the White House includes Virginia and its 13 votes. Polls close at 7 p.m. EST.
Georgia: Things are close here, but we'll know who gets the 15 electoral votes sometime after polls close at 7 p.m. EST.
Florida: The notorious swing state might not be as essential as past years, but with 27 electoral votes it's a crucial prize.
Ohio: Polls close there at 7:30 p.m. EST. It should be a close battle, as usual, for the state's 20 votes!

North Carolina: Officials have the option to keep the polls open until 8:30 p.m EST. The state hasn't gone blue since Jimmy Carter won it. There are 15 votes up for grabs.
Pennsylvania: Obama has had a lead here for a while, but McCain has campaigned hard. If McCain wins the 21 votes, and we'll know sometime after the polls close at 8 p.m. EST, he probably still has a good shot.
Missouri: Polls close at 8 p.m. EST. With Missouri's 11 votes, so goes the winner of the election, usually.
Colorado: Polls close at 9 p.m. EST. Colorado's nine votes seem to be leaning toward Obama, who made a big play for the previously red state.
Nevada: We'll have to wait until at least 10 p.m. EST to find out where the five votes go.

How to Pick Which Election Coverage to Tune Into on Tuesday

With less than a week left until election night it's time to start making plans - not what election parties or events you're attending, this is a much, much more important decision- who you're spending the evening with, teevees-wise. The media has been as important this campaign as the candidates - and since McCain is saying they've all been fooled as to the real state of the race, I can't wait to see the results. I know who I'm watching, I've been so CNN-loyal the whole campaign, the thought of abandoning my Wolf wouldn't happen by a hair of his chinny-chin-chin. I might peek to see what the other kids have going on though, so luckily there's a whole passel of lists to help us decide who to watch.

Live From New York - It's John McCain!

With only days to go until election day, John McCain did what he could to get the SNL bump. While Barack Obama paid millions to appear on major networks during primetime last Wednesday, John McCain and Tina Fey, as Sarah Palin of course, opened Saturday Night Live by hosting a QVC sketch. The original maverick pitched pork knives (to cut the pork) and (blank) commemorative plates to help customers remember the 10 joint town-hall debates Barack Obama did not attend.

McCain came back later during Weekend Update, receiving a mixed reaction from the audience. Were the free sketches worth more than the Obama infomercial, or did it all just make a joke of the campaign too close to voting? Check out the shopping channel appearance - there's even a Heidi Montag shout-out, and a surprise guest!

SNL's Lorne Michaels Has Politics on the Brain

While Buzz attends the Television Critics Association Press Tour in Hollywood, she's been passing on all things political. Just yesterday, she got inches away from Keith Olbermann (who is "surprisingly very attractive" in person) and on Sunday she took an inside look at Saturday Night Live, which is gearing up for an intense election season schedule, including a Thursday night edition of Weekend Update.

Buzz got the scoop on whether Lorne Michaels, executive producer and co-creator of SNL, finds certain politicians funnier than others. Here's what he had to say:

Who is funnier: Barack Obama, Hillary Clinton, or John McCain?
Avoiding the question, "Our job isn't to get too close. . . . We were accused of just pounding Hillary Clinton at the beginning of the season and then we were accused of being just totally for [her] - so it shifts week to week. But I can tell you that whoever's in power, we're suspicious of."

From a satirical perspective, will SNL miss the Bush administration?
"No. About two years ago it became apparent that it was harder and harder to do anything about the president on the show. There was nothing you could be telling the audience that they weren't more than familiar with. I think that when this campaign started it was both a breath of fresh air and the country totally welcomed it in the sense that there was going to be change."

Why do people have so much trouble making fun of Obama:
"I think he's still defining himself, and he is primarily cast as heroic, which is, I think, what he is. But sooner or later, everyone does something to irritate us. And as it becomes more and more familiar, you just sort of find where the take is that everyone agrees on. I was watching Obama overseas earlier today, and you see - it's still being done very cautiously and very reverently. It might stay that way until November but maybe it won't."
