Smoker's Widow Gets $8 Million in Damages - Fair?

Six jurors just made a Florida widow $8 million richer. In 1997 Elaine Hess's husband died of lung cancer at the age of 55. Philip Morris must now pay $3 million in compensatory damages and $5 million in punitive damages for the death of the chain smoker who began smoking at 15.

The plaintiff presented a 1994 video of tobacco executives testifying to Congress that smoking was not addictive, as evidence in the case.

This is the first smoker vs. tobacco company case in Florida since pediatrician Dr. Howard Engle won a class action lawsuit and a $145 billion settlement because he couldn't quit. The award was overruled, but the state supreme court upheld the decision that tobacco companies knowingly sold dangerous products and hid the risks from the public. The court said smokers had to sue individually. Now that Hess was successful, approximately 8,000 other smokers will likely sue.

Bridesmaid Drama

I got engaged over the summer and immediately asked my 4 best friends to be bridesmaids even though I am having a very small wedding and I only really wanted 3 bridesmaids because I did not want anyone to feel left out. Well, just recently one of my bridesmaids (I will call her Elaine) just got engaged and she had decided to have a HUGE wedding and she has asked 5 other girls (a couple of whom I have never heard her talk about and I know she is not close with) to be her bridesmaids. I am extremely hurt by this because she always tells me (and puts all over her myspace) that I am one of her best friends and she couldn't live without me and how much she misses me because I am in college a few hours away. Elaine, another girl, and myself have all been very good friends since high school and have done everything together. She asked our other close friend to be the maid of honor. Even her other friend who I did not know told me that we should get to know each other since we are going to be bridesmaids together because she assumed that Elaine would definitely ask me considering how good of friends that we are and have been for so long. I am so upset and hurt that Elaine left me out of her wedding party when I included her in mine. Now I have a situation where one of our groomsman cannot be at the wedding (he is in the military and will be away) so now I feel like I need to get rid of one of my bridesmaids because we will only have 3 groomsmen (my fiance does not have another friend close enough that he wants to include in our wedding party) and now I want to ask Elaine NOT to be in my wedding party anymore. On one hand, I feel like I am being petty, but on the other hand, I am very upset by Elaine's exclusion of me from her wedding party. I'm not sure what I should do because I can't just say "Why didn't you make me a bridesmaid?" because I don't want her to have to change her plans and include me if she did not want to because I do realize that her wedding should be her day. It just hurts me to think that all of our friends will be standing up there and I will just be sitting in the audience with everyone else who isn't close to her when we have been best friends since high school. If anyone has any advice, I'd love to hear it because right now I am just so hurt and I have no idea what to do.

What Happened to the Today Sponge?

So you hate that condoms make sex less enjoyable and you despise being on hormones because they make you moody. So what's a girl to do about preventing pregnancy? Women who love the Today Sponge really love it, but the problem is, it's off the market! Last December, Synova, the company who manufactured it went bankrupt. No money means no Today Sponge. But I have good news. To hear it read more.

This past June, Alvogen purchased the manufacturing rights for the Today Sponge. There isn't much info about when we should see it back on shelves, but I'll bet it's soon since so many women are anxiously awaiting its arrival. If you can't live without the Today Sponge, you can purchase it for a pretty penny on eBay or Amazon but as soon as I hear something, I'll let you know.

The Muppets Are So Seinfeld

It's been lingering in the back of my mind for a long time now. Could we just replace each of the Seinfeld characters with muppets? I know. I know. You're thinking the show would lose its mundane charm if we turn Jerry, Elaine, and George into puppets. (Kramer is another story.) The muppets are all novelty; they couldn't pull off "nothingness" if they tried. Well, not so fast! Here's a little something of nothing . . .

Hey Everybody...DEARSUGAR and Exclusive Elaine need your help. What's your take on the positive and negative side of being in a clique?

Dear Sugar
I've got a fantastic group of girlfriends who really are like sisters to me. We go everywhere together and I feel extremely lucky to have such tight bonds with these smart and fun women.

The only problem I seem to be having with these girls is that they aren't very welcoming to anyone else that is not in our little inner circle. I've made several other friends through my involvement in activities in my community and I hate the fact that my girls aren't warm to them.

They feel we are enough for each other and they don't need or want any new friends. I can respect that, but I don't want to have to drop my other friends, do I? I wish they were more socially evolved. What can I say to them to help them to become more easygoing about new friends? Exclusive Elaine
