Real Patriots Eat Hot Dogs Until They're Red, White, and Green

Update: Joey Chestnut has reclaimed the title in a tie-breaking eat-off. Rumor has it, he's not spending the rest of the afternoon riding the Cyclone roller coaster.

Today is the day for that most blessed and sacred of all Fourth of July customs: the IFOCE/Nathan's Hot Dog Eating Competition at New York's Coney Island. The grand weiner fest will be broadcast at noon EDT on ESPN.

American Joey Chestnut won the Mustard Belt in 2007 after besting Japan's Takeru Kobayashi by eating 66 hot dogs and buns in 12 minutes last year.

The US consumes 10 times as many hot dogs each year as it does slices of pie - maybe the saying "American as apple pie" needs an update? We eat almost 7 billion dogs in the Summer months - that's 818 consumed every second. Today alone the US will consume 150 million hot dogs.

Which city grubs on the most weiners? The top four include:

This image is the stuff of nightmares. And the part that must really suck for poor Juliet up there? She didn't even win the Stroehmann Sandwich Slamm, a corned beef and rye sandwich eating contest held today, one day before St. Patrick's Day in New York City. The winner was Pat Bertoletti (seen below with a faux hawk and on the verge of upchucking expression). He consumed almost 17 sandwiches in 10 minutes to win the contest at Gallagher's Steakhouse. Barftastic.

Climate Matters Video Contest: Send the President a Message

I love when creativity and politics come crashing together, and when there's $3,000 at stake - as well as a chance to influence the next president's thoughts on the climate - well, I might just be hitting the "record" button myself. The video service Vimeo (kind of YouTube-y but cuter) is running a Climate Matters contest, aimed at opening an eco-dialogue via video.

Any time between now and Sept. 22, you can make a video like the one above with an environmental message for leaders in Washington DC. This one advocates for the EatTheView organization, showing how one citizen planted a garden in front of his own White House and its strength is in its adorable simplicity. The top 10 videos in the contest will be distributed to lawmakers in Washington, and the winning video will be broadcast on national TV along with a $3,000 prize.

Like the Obama in 30 Seconds contest, technology has democratized the political discourse in important, charming, and creative ways, and I'm happy to see it. Maybe Liberty and I will have to put together a little video entry of our own. Would you?

PETA Will Pay $1 Million For Lab Meat

What if you could have your animal and eat it too? Or even better, not have your animal and eat it too.

People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) is offering $1 million to whomever figures out how to grow meat in labs. The winner must develop a commercially viable chicken-meat product that does not contain, or make use of animal-derived products, except for starter cells obtained in the initial development stages.

Basically, PETA wants someone to use stem-cell science technology to skip the whole bird, and go straight to the bucket of chicken. Sound like you want an extra order of biscuits? To see what animal activists have to say, read more.

Animal activists, including those within PETA, feel the contest abandons the philosophy that animals are not ours to eat. They also argue that the health risks of a carnivore diet - including obesity, diabetes, and cancer - will not be appeased.

Proponents counter that this is a practical solution, which could end the maltreatment of animals, such as caging, drugging, and brutal slaughtering.

Fairboard May Banish Erotic Corndog Eating Contest

It's a sad day for Iowans. The Des Moines Fair Board is considering banning the Erotic Corndog Eating Contest organized annually by a local radio station. Our friends at The Weinstein Company and Genius Products gave us five copies of Morgan Spurlock's film Where in the World is Osama Bin Laden? to share with you readers.

Ever since I saw Super Size Me alone in the middle of the afternoon eating a McDonald's salad I sneaked in (I think that's what they call irony? Or close anyway . . .), I've been obsessed with Morgan Spurlock and his freakishly accessible yet pointed style of documentary. The man can do no wrong. I'm just as big a fan of this doc for its added bonus: getting to see the real people that live in the countries we read about all the time. Whether he found Osama or not, the film humanizes the far-off region in a way that makes the movie. I want you to own it!

Denny's: Candidate Lookalikes Win Free Breakfast Until 2012

Rise and shine, here's your steaming helping of "oh, man the campaign is everywhere! Denny's restaurant is hoping brave citizens will come forward ready to serve the needs of "Real Breakfast" by entering their candidate lookalike contest. Think you or someone you know has what it takes to become the leader of the free breakfast? All it takes is an uploaded video of your best candidate impersonation, making a speech about the eating a real breakfast (as opposed to fast food, not imaginary) any time between now and July 31.

The best three videos of each candidate (six total) will be put on the Denny’s Vote for Real Ballot where the public can vote (Aug. 5-15) in the one truly important election this year - who will win the grand prize of free breakfast until 2012?
