Why Women Love Vamps: It's Really a Desire For Gay Men?

Esquire's Stephen Marche thinks he's figured out the obvious explanation for the vampire craze sweeping the world. He writes:

Vampires have overwhelmed pop culture because young straight women want to have sex with gay men. Not all young straight women, of course, but many, if not most, of them.

So there you have it. Still confused? Using Twilight as an example, Marche draws a parallel between Edward and a gay man who is the object of a straight woman's lust. He says that just like an unresponsive gay man, Edward is a "sweet, screwed-up high school kid, and at the beginning of his relationship with Bella, she is attracted to him because he is strange, beautiful, and seemingly repulsed by her."

Marche believes that wanting Edward to be your boyfriend is the same as wishing you could turn that gorgeous gay man into your lover. Are you buying this theory? If not, why do you think some women love the vamps?

Lighten Up: Kids Draw Presidents Set to Tunes!

This is near and dear to my heart since the whole reason I got interested in politics to begin with was our unit on the presidents in fifth grade - this video brings it all back.

With fast-forward animation and cheerful music accompanying the kids' drawings, well, it's not controversial at all. But with the convention starting tomorrow (!), I'm liking the priceless drawing of number five, James Monroe, and his drawings of balloons and the "Era of Good Feelings" written on his shoulder. Plus! For extra credit you can use it as a little quiz - see if you can name the president before the picture and name gets filled in. Quick, who's number 34?

Children's Drawings Come to Life

These pictures make me happy! I wish I knew more about the details of this project, but I guess it's pretty self-evident. Take some kids' drawings, reenact them in all their innocent splendor, and then take a picture. Oh, yeah. And then post them on the Internet so folks like me can put them up for all to see. Wheee!

Where Should School Antidrug Policies Draw the Line?

When an assistant principle wrongly suspected 13-year-old Savana Redding of bringing prescription-strength ibuprofen pills to school (one pill is the equivalent to two Advil, mind you), Savana was forced to undergo a nude strip search. She recounted, "they asked me to pull out my bra and move it from side to side. They made me open my legs and pull out my underwear.”

For months after the incident, Savana stayed home from school to do her studies, and she eventually transferred. Now the Supreme Court will decide whether Savana can sue the school officials for forcing her to strip naked and expose herself to them. The officials argue that they had good reason to suspect Savana of having the drugs.

A lower court has ruled that the school conducted an unreasonable search, but one judge dissented because he said the school was acting in good faith to stop a potential threat to student safety.

While I find it extreme to humiliate a girl for ibuprofen, do you think strip searches in schools always go too far?
