Product of the Day: Drank, the Anti-Energy Drink

An anti-energy drink, eh? (As The Village Voice put it, "Isn't that already covered by a little thing called wine?") After reading more about this grape-flavored, carbonated beverage spiked with valerian and melatonin (known sleep aids) and then hearing that, according to the press release "...this calming drink was inspired by today's popular hip hop artists who embrace the much sought-after hip hop lifestyle that encourages people to capture a stress-free state of mind," I finally understand the tagline, "Slow your roll." They must mean eye-roll, cuz mine are rolling a mile a minute.

You Asked: I Drank Way Too Much and Acted Like a Fool!

Dear Sugar--

Hi - So I met this guy at a place I always go to for lunch. We exchanged numbers and not one Saturday, but TWO Saturdays in a row - I drank way too much and acted like a fool in front of him. I feel that there is no way to go back on this action.

I'm a slight "wild child" but I'm a good girl and have just been having a hard time lately. Now I don't want advice on my drinking - I KNOW I need to lay off - but I do need advice on what to do. I have called him a few times asking him out, to dinner, a hockey game, but he keeps turning me down.

If there is nothing I can do - how can I at least hold my head up with dignity when I go to get lunch? I refuse to find a new place!. PLEASE HELP!

--Love-My-Lunch-Place Linda

To see DEARSUGAR'S answer, read more

Dear Love-My-Lunch-Place Linda--

I think we can all relate to drinking a little too much in front of a guy we like so don't be too hard on yourself. If you are really concerned about what he is thinking about you, try calling him just to talk (not to invite him out on a date). Let him know how embarrassed you are and you hope he isn't judging you on your past experience.

If getting a little tipsy is a rare occurrence, you should tell him that. Be honest and explain that you'd love to have a second chance to hang out - without the alcohol of course! On the other hand, if drinking every time you go out is what's on your agenda, it may not be what he's into so try to get a good read on him.

If he refuses to talk to you, that is his decision and unfortunately there is nothing more you can do. If you love your lunch place, don't let this incident stop you from going there. Walk with your head held high and if you see him again, just smile and act friendly. Taking the high road will show him that you are mature enough to put the situation behind you and hopefully he can do the same. Good luck Linda!

Inauguration Uh-Ohs: Food Fights, Drunk VPs, and Fire

President Obama has gone out of his way to echo Lincoln throughout the presidential transition, right down to his inauguration lunch where food the 16th president "would have enjoyed" was served. But not even Abe Lincoln's inauguration went smoothly. What could possibly go wrong? Let's look at what has at inaugurations past.

Andrew Jackson, the president of the people, was followed back to the White House by 20,000 well-wishers looking for ice cream, cake, and lemonade. It turned into a mob that nearly destroyed the White House and forced Jackson to exit through a back door.

A food fight broke out during Lincoln's inaugural supper.

Andrew Johnson, Lincoln's vice president, had come down with a bug on inauguration day, so he drank some whiskey to perk himself up. And then he drank some more! People held their heads in embarrassment while he rambled, drunk, through his speech.

To see the rest, read more.

Someone forgot to turn on the heat at Ulysses S. Grant's inaugural ball. People tripped over one another while dancing in their overcoats, and canaries - brought in to chirp for song - froze to death.

At JFK's inauguration, a lectern caught on fire during the invocation. Then Vice President Lyndon Johnson tripped on the words of his oath, saying "without any mental reservation whatever."

Poet Robert Frost mistakenly dedicated his poem not to John F. Kennedy but to John Findlay. Who? He was a Harvard professor.

So far so good today, but a long night - 10 inaugural balls - awaits the Obamas tonight.

Source

You Asked: How Rude Can You Get?

Dear Sugar,

A friend of mine and her family just moved to the area where I live, and they are currently waiting to move into their new home. They asked my husband and I if they could stay the weekend with us because their house wasn't quite ready. They have two kids; ages three and seven, and I have a 16-month-old baby who is on a eating, playing, and napping schedule. We told the family that they could stay under the pretense that they'd be quiet when my daughter went down for her nap and at night at her bedtime. We also told them to buy some food for themselves because we are on a budget, and they agreed.

On Sunday afternoon, they asked if they could stay another seven days because there were delays on their house. My husband was leaving the next day for a month, so the decision rested upon me. I felt badly for them so I agreed. Throughout the week, they did not clean up after themselves in the kitchen, their kids jumped all over our furniture, they ate and drank our food, lounged around like it was their home, were not quiet when my daughter was sleeping, and worst of all, their kids would hit and push my daughter and take her toys away from her, pretending they were theirs. I ended up kicking them out two days before the end of the week. My question is was I wrong in telling them to leave earlier than I agreed on? Were we rude by telling them they had to buy food for their family? I'm feeling guilty for making them stay in a hotel, but I was at my wits' end!
- Taken Advantage of Tina

To see DearSugar's answer read more.

Dear Taken Advantage of Tina,

Yes, you agreed to let this family stay with you, but they didn't hold up their end of the bargain. In fact, they were completely rude and disrespectful by not obeying the rules you placed in your home, with your family, and your personal belongings - I would have kicked them out, too! Your hands are full enough with a 16-month-old baby so my hat goes off to you for even extending the invitation in the first place. Since money is tight for everyone these days, I think asking them to purchase their own food was completely fair - you provided them a roof and a bed - why should you feed them, too?

If you can't shake the guilt you feel, perhaps you should have a chat with your friend. Tell her where you were coming from and hopefully she'll see how her family's behavior crossed the line and you'll get the overdue apology you so much deserve.

Source

Do Tell: When Did You Stop Believing in Santa?

He came home from school and while we were having a snack in the kitchen, he told me that his friend's older brother said that Santa wasn't real. I was devastated and bawled my eyes out.

I have a feeling most of you have a story similar to mine so do tell, when did you stop believing in Santa? And how did you find out that it wasn't actually him that ate the cookies and drank the milk by the tree?

Sunday Confessional: I Lost My Sister's Favorite Jacket

I'm a forgetful person by nature and my older sister takes every opportunity possible to call me irresponsible.

Friday night her boyfriend surprised her and took her away for the night to celebrate their anniversary. She asked me to feed her cat while she was gone since I have a set of her keys, so while at her place, I browsed through her closet. I decided to borrow her leather jacket that I've always loved to wear out that night - I figured she'd never realize it was gone!

Later that evening, I went out with my friends, admittedly drank too much and went home with a guy I had been flirting with all night. In the morning, I rushed out of his place in order to get back to my sister's to feed her cat. As soon as I got out of the cab, I realized I had left her jacket in the backseat! My heart sank; it's her favorite article of clothing and she didn't even give me permission to borrow it! I've been guilt-ridden for the past two days and have no idea what to do. My sister is going to be furious with me and I just can't face her disappointment, even though I know I deserve it. I haven't mentioned it to her and I'm contemplating not saying anything at all. Can I be forgiven if I let her think someone else took it or that she herself lost it?

Source

Too Fat to Fight? German Troops Overweight, Filled With Beer

The extra calories from beer are weighing down German troops fighting in Afghanistan. American and British troops have strict orders to stay sober in that country, but the Germans get to drink two pints a day.

Germany's parliament has looked into how a lack-of-alcohol ban has impacted the mission. The Times of London reports that the investigation revealed that in 2007 the 3,500 troops in Afghanistan drank 1.7 million pints of beer and 90,000 bottles of wine. These new findings help explain an earlier report that showed 40 percent of German soldiers were overweight, a significantly higher figure than the general German population rate.

Government restrictions mean German soldiers participate in passive operations in Afghanistan, and apparently the government will not use the word for "war" in press statements about the effort there. Do you think Germany's cautious war policy has made the troops more passive? Either way, I'm sure life in Afghanistan isn't one big happy hour.

Sunday Confessional: I Led Him On

For as long as I can remember, I've had the horrible tendency to pursue a guy until he's totally into me, and then dump him right as things start to heat up. There's just something about a crush being interested in me that suddenly makes me totally uninterested in him. In many ways I think I just like the thrill of the chase. Now I'm heading into my late-20s, and struggling with the same habit. I've tried to work on it but I just can't force my feelings.

Recently I met a truly wonderful guy. We started dating and hit it off immediately. In fact, things were going so well that I thought I might be finally getting over my issue. Over the months we were dating, I learned that he was dealing with the recent loss of his mother. I was shocked that talking about something so serious brought us closer together instead of sending me out the door. Well a few weekends ago, we went out, I drank way too much, and ended up very sick. He took care of me, brought me home, and stayed the night with me to make sure I was OK. As soon as I woke up the next morning, I immediately sensed something had changed in me; I was over it.

That night we had plans to hang out but I never called him back. The next day he called to see what happened and again, I didn't call him back. I ended up breaking up with him via voicemail. He called one last time to ask what he had done wrong, and to try to talk things over with me, but I ignored him. In the past, breaking up always felt like a relief, but this time I felt terrible. I realized I'm actually feeling a loss. Now I want to work things out with him, but I heard through a mutual friend that he's totally disgusted by my behavior. Do you think there's any way for him to forgive me?
