Dish! What Backhanded Compliment Have You Heard?

A scoop of criticism with a cherry on top, anyone? Backhanded compliments can be the fiercest of insults. Chances are we've probably all heard them and even served them up at some point or another. I prefer to think that most of this nasty flattery is an accidental result of someone speaking before thinking. But giving our offender the benefit of the doubt doesn't take away the sting of a blindsided burn. So you tell me: What backhanded compliment have you heard or - mean girl alert! - dropped on someone else? Here are a few to get us started:

You're really filling out.
I'm so jealous you don't have to wear a bra every day.
Hey! Your face cleared up!
If you were taller, you could be a model.
You look so nice today, I almost didn’t recognize you.
That tasted better than it looked.
It's so refreshing to have a conversation with someone who doesn't feel the need to prove they are smart.

So Ford Motors just spent several months (and I'm sure several million dollars) coming up with the following campaign slogan: "Ford. Drive One." Hmmm. Is it just me, or is this ad a little, oh, I don't know. . . LAME?! So we had a little fun over here and came up with our own slogans for everyday activities. I just checked my email today and, naturally, I received spam. Although I didn't open it up, the spam name made me laugh out loud. It was from Romaine Huckabone. He just wanted to say, "Hi." I'm sure he also wanted to sell me some Viagra, Soma pills, or some penis enlargement product. (Thanks, Romaine, I'm good.) Or maybe he's friends with Tony E. Grubbs, who is concerned that I need to "Halt credit harassment now." Here are some other people I don't know who are concerned for my well-being. Dinner Is Over! And No Thanksgiving

A couple of years ago, I spent Thanksgiving at a friend's house. Everything was great, her mother had worked all day to make the perfect Thanksgiving dinner, turkey, stuffing, mashed potatoes, homemade biscuits, and all the other classics. We all sat down to eat and some of my friend's siblings were arguing incessantly.

The mother who worked so hard, kept telling them to quit it and enjoy dinner that she had worked so hard on. Of course, they didn't and just kept at each other. So finally the mother (who can be very dramatic) stood up and grabbed a pitcher of water on the table and just started pouring it all over the table and the food. As she poured, she announced "dinner was over!" Every dish was basically watered down! YUCK! No one made a peep and just politely got up from the table. It was the end of Thanksgiving!

Girl Crush du Jour: Alison Brie

Adorable. No word better sums up actress Alison Brie. And while I am sure the 26-year-old would prefer a more sophisticated adjective, she does play Trudy Campbell on Mad Men and ain't nothin' more sophisticated than that. Combine that with her success as the strung-out community college student on NBC's Community, and how I could not be crushing?

Other than radiating ebullience in real life, Alison, who says she's rarely recognized on the street, seems nothing like either character. She grew up with hippie parents in South Pasadena, CA, where she still lives and showed up to a Pasadena Weekly interview in a "Die Yuppie Scum" t-shirt.

But Alison's not as innocent as she or her characters look. She told Pasadena Weekly: "I don’t know why people see me . . . like I’m all prim and proper, when I couldn’t be more different. People think I come off that way, but I’m not.”

She's right. In this 2007 skit, she dishes it right back to the Internet's most infamous yogi, The Underminer, when he asks her to be in his variety show that's like "Curb Your Enthusiasm meets You Can't Do That on Television." Namaste! Watch it below.

Do Tell: What Are Your Favorite Thanksgiving Traditions?

Thanksgiving is almost here, and it might just be my favorite holiday. Every year my family gets together for a big party at my aunt's house. I always look forward to the classic food like turkey and mashed potatoes, but I also love the dishes specific to my family, like my mom's spicy jalapeno cranberry sauce or the creamed onions made according to my grandma's recipe. After dinner, we all head to the living room hoping to beat our food comas with a spirited game of charades.

These are the traditions that I will be looking forward to all week. What Thanksgiving traditions do you enjoy?

Dish! What Makes Someone Funny?

Some people have a dry sense of humor, some are animated and loud. I can't really say I have a type, but like art, I know it when I see it. And you can see from my IM exchange with a friend up there about a mutual acquaintance, I don't like when you can tell someone's trying hard to be funny. What qualities make someone funny to you? (And don't mind those catty cats up there! They're always like that.)
