Not the usual suspects, your John Adams (who said it was "dress and ornament rather than Body, Soul, or Substance,") your Thomas Jefferson, or Benjamin Franklin — that's kids' stuff. Did you know a guy named "Button" signed the thing?

Kosovo officially declared independence from Serbia on Sunday. Kosovo, the seventh state to emerge from the former Yugoslavia, worked with international actors, in hopes to be accepted into the international community. On Monday, President Bush gave his approval and signaled that full recognition will come soon.

Kosovo's unilateral declaration of independence, which means nothing unless recognized, has split the international community. The United States, Australia, and some of Europe's major powers — Britain, France, Germany, and Italy — have offered their support to the country, despite warnings from other influential countries and EU members.
Russia, China, and at least five EU states oppose the unilateral assertion of independence.

- Russia just warned the United States that Kosovo's declaration of independence from Serbia threatens international stability. President Bush recently said history would show that Kosovo's quest for independence to be "a correct move," adding that, "we believe it will bring peace." The Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said during a phone call with Condoleezza Rice, "we underlined the dangerous consequences of such a step, which threatens the destruction of world order and international stability which have developed over decades."

- Just-released declassified reports on the frequency of insurgent attacks in Iraq show a large decrease in attacks directly following the surge of US troops, but the conflict now seems to have drifted into a stalemate. Levels of violence have plateaued recently, remaining constant from November 2007 through early 2008. The report was released yesterday at a Senate hearing.

- The Oscars ceremony held last night produced a huge sweep for the Coen Brothers and their film No Country for Old Men. Daniel Day-Lewis won Best Actor for There Will be Blood and Marion Cotillard took home Best Actress for La Vie en Rose. The ceremony marked one of the biggest entertainment events to take place since the end of the writer's strike.
