Conventional Wisdom is a different kind of advice column. Your questions will be answered by people from all walks of life rather than by advice experts. This week, a woman in a happy marriage tries to help out a woman stuck in an affair.

After three years of research, the New York-based Guttmacher Institute has concluded that although contraceptive use has lowered the number of abortions worldwide, unsafe abortions still account for a staggering 70,000 deaths a year, particularly in the developing world. More than half the deaths are in sub-Saharan Africa, a region with the lowest rates of contraceptive use and the highest rates of unintended pregnancies.
"In much of the developing world," said the Institute's president Sharon Camp, "abortion remains highly restricted, and unsafe abortion is common and continues to damage women's health and threaten their survival."

Since revealing her dark family secret to the public, Mackenzie Phillips has described the period after her father molested her at 18 as "consensual." And although her father was a "damaged guy" as she said on the Today show recently, Phillips also said, "I believe I have some accountability for what went down afterwards."
It's this taboo area that writer Kathryn Harrison explores in her disturbing and beautifully written memoir, The Kiss, about a four-year "affair" she had with her father with whom she reconnected at age 20.

During his first interview as president, Barack Obama said his "job to the Muslim world is to communicate that the Americans are not your enemy." Well considering the level of dissatisfaction around the world, especially in the Middle East and Northern Africa, Obama may have little time for anything else.
According to a new Gallup poll, only in Sub-Saharan Africa do the majority of people (72 percent) approve of the job performance of the United State's leadership.

What is going on with today's teens? I just read a study that said there's been a 76 percent rise in emergency room visits between 1998 -2005 among teens who are abusing ADHD drugs like Adderall. (They crush the meds, which may or may not have been prescribed to them, snort them, and can experience side effects that mimic cardiac arrest.)
And now, a news report says that not only are many teens abusing alcohol and drugs — they're delivering those substances to their systems in bizarre and harmful ways.

Dear Sugar,
My boyfriend and I have been dating exclusively for five months. We both used to be morbidly obese and therefore haven't had very many romantic relationships in the past. In fact, my boyfriend only recently lost his virginity three years ago, when he was 28.

You’re feeling pretty fabulous in your newest pair of (very) high heels out on a Friday night. They’re gorgeous, but the only problem is that you have to pay close attention to your every step; you’re still a bit wobbly in them. Making your way from the crosswalk onto the sidewalk, your ankle slips and you go down hard.
