TV Interventions: Eye-Opening Truth or Blinding Exploitation?

Celebrity DJ Adam Goldstein (aka DJ AM) has teamed up with MTV to launch a new show tentatively titled Gone Too Far. The reality show will capture tough-love interventions for young people addicted to drugs.

You might be wondering what DJing has to do with kicking addictions. He may spin songs for party animals, but DJ AM is not one himself. He admits to a tumultuous upbringing and a struggle with hard drugs. After getting serious about recovery, with the help of friends, he has been sober for over a decade now.

DJ AM's new show sounds like A&E's Intervention, one of my favorites. While it's often hard to watch, I'm fascinated by the damage caused by addiction, and more importantly the subject's ability to confront it. I appreciate that the show almost always tells a full story - we see an addict before, during, and after the intervention.

Has a Tragedy Ever Brought You Closer?

As I'm sure you all heard, DJ AM and Travis Barker were critically injured in a plane crash over the weekend but thankfully, both are expected to make a full recovery. Although they are no longer together, I just learned that AM's ex-girlfriend Mandy Moore rushed to his bedside in South Carolina yesterday to support him on his road to recovery. Her presence clearly proves that she still cares a great deal for her ex, which got me thinking about how the worst scenarios have the ability to bring people together. Has a tragedy every brought you close to an old flame or to anyone you had an estranged relationship with?

Take something regular-sized I may be lukewarm about, reduce it to a teeny-tiny size, and suddenly I'm all over it. (Am I 12?) Anyway, this cute little scratch pad called the Plastinkuzz looks like so much fun! I doubt you'll suddenly be invited to DJ tons of parties with this thing, but at the very least you can bug your cat with it, who will then kick your ass. Good times!

You Asked: My Wedding Day Wasn't Perfect

Dear Sugar--

I recently got married but I am having trouble getting over a couple of things that didn't happen at our wedding. We got married at a church on a military base. I had wanted so much to have the cross sabers (swords) as we walked out but it didn't happen. The guys that were supposed to do this were called to duty that weekend and they couldn't make it.

As we were about to enter the reception hall for the introduction, our photographer told us there was no DJ! We managed to find someone else and he followed our program but he didn't have a lot of experience. He was OK but I know the music could have been better.

Talking to my mother-in-law after didn't help either. She said if it weren't for her daughter singing, the wedding would have been a failure. Although I know these circumstances were beyond our control, but I feel as though we let our guests down. We didn't tell people what happened but when I heard comments I just swallowed hard. I feel a bit depressed sometimes and I hope this doesn't linger over me for a long time. Any advice?

Dear Let Down Donna--

I know your wedding day is supposed to be "The Greatest Day of Your Life," but you know what, I'd rather have an amazing marriage over a perfect wedding any day. Try and think about your life with your new husband and how happy you are to have found a loving, caring person to be with for the rest of your life. Your wedding was just a party to celebrate the beautiful connection you've made, so try and think about the deeper meaning.

With that said, I can completely understand why you could be feeling upset about things not turning out the way you had planned. Try looking over your photo album to relive the parts that were great. Have your friends over to reminisce about how funny it was to see your grandma dance with the best man, or how sappy your brother's speech was, and talk to your husband or your girlfriends about how you feel - getting your feelings off your chest is bound to help.

While things weren't necessarily perfect in your eyes, I am sure all your guests had a great time and were honored to be able to witness your happy day. I hope this helps and congrats!

Fear Of Highway Driving

Dear Sugar,
I have a fear of being on the highway even when I am not the one who is driving the car. I trust my friends and family, but I am scared of the other drivers on the road. I can't seem to shake the feeling that we could get into a horrible accident and die. I make myself sick when I think about getting onto a highway or a freeway. I sweat and my hands clam up. Dear Back Road Bettina,
Think of the facts. Only 4% of serious or fatal accidents occur on interstates nationwide. These are the safest roads in the nation.

Only about 1.48% (for every 100 million vehicle miles travelled) get into fatal accidents. This is a statistic from 2003 when this was a particularly HIGH year for highway deaths. Out of those fatalities, 40% were alcohol related. What this information tells you is that this is a very low percentage.

So now that you understand the facts, you should feel much calmer knowing that the likelihood of you getting into an accident on a highway is slim. Here are some things that you can do to make yourself feel even more comfortable.

Do your best to drive in safe conditions. It is more common for accidents to occur during rain and snow so try and stay off of the highways during bad weather.
Always wear your seat belt. More than half (56%) of people who are killed on the road were not using seat belts.
If possible, try not to look at the road when you are in the car. Be the DJ, read, or do something to distract yourself when you are the passenger.
Make sure the driver isn't driving recklessly or doing something to sidetrack them from focusing on the road (i.e. putting on make-up or talking on their cell phone).
Ask the driver not to speed, not to switch lanes and to please stay in the right lane where cars drive more slowly. This way if you are panicked, you can take the next exit and get off of the highway more quickly.

How would you react if you ran into your ex fiance, (who you recently broke up with) and he was on a date? It seems like not so nice Nicole Richie wasn't all that mature about it. She actually had DJ AM's date removed from a party that she was at.
