I loathe the word cougar - used, for the most part, to try to humiliate women who date younger men (their "prey," known as cubs). But for better or worse, it's in the lexicon, which means that the idea that older women can still be sexy - and sexual - is out there, too. The following group of films shows that the cougar's been around in popular culture for a while, that cougar/cub desire is a two-way street, and that these couplings can be good, bad, or downright scary.

Chewbacca Is a Daddy!

OK, not that Chewbacca. A red panda named Chewbacca at the National Zoo fathered two pandas who were recently born at another zoo in Tennessee. He missed their delivery, but hey - it was a one-night stand, and the zookeepers put him up to it. Give Chewie a friggin' break . . . (I must say, these cubs are the cutest little crawlers I ever did see!)

Cute Alert: Lion Has Two Daddies

This isn't footage of Siegfried and Roy, nor is this made by Disney (as far as I can tell). It's footage of a lion who was raised as a cub by these two dudes and then was returned into the wild where he socialized with his pride and got on with life. Then his caretakers returned to visit. There is no sound to this, strangely, and it needs no soundtrack. The look of recognition on the lion's face shows his disbelief, then joy, and gratitude. (Man, call me corny, but I teared up at this one. And thanks for the cute title, Flippy!)

Say What? New Cubs Owner on Coming Out in Her Thirties

"I think for a long time I wasn't really out to myself growing up in Omaha, Nebraska, to a Catholic conservative family. It took me a while to come out to myself and not long after that I came out to them. I think that it really couldn't of been a better experience. They were all immediately supportive."

The Ricketts family bought the Cubs and Wrigley Field from the Tribune Co. for $845 million in a deal. Laura Ricketts is also on the board of the gay rights organization Lambda Legal. Cute Alert: Chimp Adopts Tiger Cubs

I think we may have just hit the jackpot for interspecies lovin'. Due to some hurricane aftermath, two teeny tigers had to be separated from their mother, but Anjana the chimp was more than happy to babysit. It actually sounds like the plot of a cheeseball Disney movie. But you can't argue with this cuteness! For more chimp-kitty snuggles, UK Daily Mail and The Sun have the goods.

British wolf expert Shaun Ellis is on a mission - to promote understanding of wolves and to reintegrate wolf populations around the world. He’s literally run with the wolves for years, sleeping, eating, and living with them and even being the leader of a pack. His “human love” Helen Jeffs is now trying to live with him and his feral, furry friends, too.

In Living With the Wolfman, the new Animal Planet series, Shaun helps Helen learn to “growl, bark, and bite her way to authority” among the wolves. Watch wolfy-looking Shaun teach a wolf cub how to howl. Bizarre - and amazing.

School For Aspiring Cougars - Hilarious or Horrifying?

Mark your calendars, cougar-wannabes! November 6 is your big day. Before the California Cougar Convention takes place at the Beverly Hills Crowne Plaza Hotel, cougar expert Lucia (no last name?) will host a cougar tutorial. The Cougar School must have a very easy learning curve, because this "Queen of the Cougar Jungle" Lucia teaches the class at 6:30 - and then gives the keynote address at 8 p.m.!

I imagine her instruction will go something like this: "Wear sexy clothes, make it known you're sexually available, and go to a bar where cubs are." I mean - could it be any more difficult than that?

Have Hate Groups Been Quieter Than Expected This Election?

Despite news of a dead bear cub shot through the head and draped with Obama signs and a car vandalized allegedly for sporting a McCain sticker, apparently hate group activity has been less intense than expected this campaign. Groups who monitor hate activity with an eye toward preventing violence are reporting an eerie silence from traditional sources of open racism - much less than they expected this late in the race.

The director of a law center that tracks hate group says, “What we really haven’t seen is white supremacists really rallying over an Obama presidency. Hate groups are in a more or less stunned position right now; they haven’t been able to figure out how to proceed just yet.”

Politician Douglas Wilder, 20 years ago had a campaign almost fail because of the Bradley (or Wilder) effect - where polling indicates voters will do one thing before succumbing to suspected race-related cold feet in the booth. He now says, "America has grown, people have grown."

Perhaps. Though even children are acutely aware of the issue of race in the campaign, it seems to be having an unexpected affect - nine percent of voters say they're more likely to vote for Obama because of his race, more than those who wouldn't for the same reason.

But has hate been quiet? We've seen presidential mailers looking like food stamps emblazoned with fried chicken, an effigy of Obama hung from a tree at a college in Oregon, and the KKK saying they hope if Obama is elected it will inspire a white backlash.

I suppose listening is in the ear of the beholder as to gauge the volume level on that. But will hate groups' vociferousness become more prevalent in the next two weeks - or on election night? Are they really too stunned by the becoming more real possibility of an Obama presidency to gather their organizations to rally? Or has America, like Wilder says, "grown?"
