Three criminals made a mad dash for freedom while in transit to prison. Although chained to each other, they thought they could outrun the police officers guarding them-- no problem. Their plan just might have worked, if it weren't for that damn stationary pole in front of them. Who could have seen that thing coming?

Showbiz Pizza's in-house robotic band, Rock-afire Explosion, always creeped me out as a kid. I recently stumbled across a music vid the group released for their cover of "Smooth Criminal" and thought I'd give the group another chance to redeem themselves. Big mistake. There is some hard-core horror movie sh*t up in this vid. What the hell do they slip into that pizza sauce? You'd think the mention of "blood stains in the carpet" would automatically disqualify a song from their play list, but no...

Commission Examines Not-So-Funny Reality of Prison Rape

I find the topic of sexual abuse in prisons both depressing and compelling. On "the outside," rape is viewed as the price a convict should expect to pay for his or her crime. References to prison in everyday conversations or popular culture (like this soap as promotional product for the TV show Prison Break) typically involve jokes about rape. Once a criminal is involved, it seems like it's suddenly OK to joke about an otherwise taboo topic.

Although pop cultural references to sexual abuse in prison tend to be lighthearted and humorous, prison rape is a serious problem deserving attention. A federal commission was set up to look into prison rape, and the numbers are startling. According to the report released today, at least 60,000 inmates are sexually abused every year.

Based on the research, more prisoners claimed abuse by staff than by other inmates. In addition, short, young, gay, or female inmates were more likely to be victimized than other inmates.

Hopefully the common sense guidelines offered by the commission, such as strict background checks for staff and medical attention for victims, will keep inmates (who are human beings just like everyone else) safer and address the challenges prison rape presents to public health and inmate rehabilitation efforts.

On The Newsstand: A Comedian's War on Crooked Politics

Popular Italian comedian Beppe Grillo combines Michael Moore and Stephen Colbert, Italian style. The latest issue of The New Yorker chronicles Grillo's quest to cure the Italian government of epidemic corruption. At massive rallies, Grillo calls out the 29 convicted criminals currently serving in the Italian Parliament or representing Italy in the European Parliament. Past crimes range from aiding and abetting murder to perjury and tax evasion. These leaders have approved an annual budget for Italy's symbolic presidency four times that of Buckingham palace. And legislators recently voted on their own perks such limousine chauffeurs, free air travel and haircuts, and generous pensions.

Grillo has galvanized Italians with his irreverence. By simply talking about the corruption, he has the potential to change popular attitudes. Mainstream Italian press is controlled or owned outright by political parties, and journalists constantly face libel suits. As a result, Grillo uses his blog, beppegrillo.it, to communicate with his followers.

Referring to the latest parliamentary crisis, Grillo told the magazine:

"I was watching on television, and I saw legislatures spitting at each other. [...] Then I turned to 'The Simpsons,' and it seemed like a real parliament. It's surreal. We've gone beyond all decency."
