Code Pink Socks It To Bush With Shoe Protest

It was only a matter of time before Bush's opponents at home took advantage of last weekend's shoe attack to highlight their frustration with the President. Code Pink, the infamous group of women for peace, gathered outside the White House and in Berkeley, CA yesterday to hold a "Farewell Kiss Shoe-In" for President Bush.

Just like the Iraqis, who gathered in the streets carrying shoes to show their solidarity with the jailed journalists, the women of Code Pink picked up, or untied, the latest symbol of dissent. One member explained the group's motivation:

"It's outrageous that al-Zaidi could get two years in prison for insulting George Bush, when Bush is directly responsible for the deaths of 1.5 million Iraqis and 4,200 U.S. troops, and 5 million displaced Iraqis. The one who should be in jail is George Bush, and he should be charged with war crimes."

While the shoe demonstration could be seen as a little predictable, perhaps Bush only invited it when he said about his attacker, "I don't know what the guy's cause is." With banners dedicating shoes to the "widows, orphans and those killed in Iraq," Code Pink offered Bush an explanation. Check out the pics from the White House protest.

Senate Passes Bailout, Protesters Visit Candidates' Offices

Spread out across the floor in John McCain's Senate office, Code Pink protesters chanted, "Bailout over my dead body," yesterday. Along with a plethora of cameras, the protesters then made their way over to Barack Obama's office. The group is among those Americans who oppose a Wall Street bailout. Their efforts didn't work, since both John McCain and Barack Obama supported the bill.

Picking up on the unpopularity, Capitol Hill ditched the term "bailout," instead calling it a rescue. The better marketing obviously helped, as the bill made it through the Senate. The final bill evolved from 3 pages as proposed by Bush, to 102 pages that failed in the House, to over 450 pages. Both Democratic and Republican leaders have faith that it will pass the House on Friday.

John McCain Accepts the Republican Nomination!

Since I made up my mind to vote for John McCain, I've been waiting for this night - and by the sounds of the crowd, an arena full of people agreed with me. The build up to John McCain was appropriately quick and tough and everyone was beyond anxious to get to the goods and see how McCain would follow Palin's speech. It felt different in the crowd. Yesterday's raucous relief was replaced with an enthusiastic solemnity.

The line up was a slate of friends and leaders who testified to McCain's readiness to lead and protect the country. Sen. Lindsay Graham had some particularly strong words:

Don't get me wrong. I'm not saying Barack Obama doesn't care. I'm just saying - he doesn't get it. Not once was Barack Obama's eloquent voice ever raised in support of Victory in Iraq. Not once was it used to rally our troops in battle. Instead, he inspired those who supported retreat and would have accepted our defeat.

Former PA Governor and Secretary of Homeland Security Tom Ridge said:

Who but John McCain has the experience . . the sheer will . . the steady hand. . . and the informed judgment to advance our economic and political interests during these perilous 21st century times? And who but John McCain - and only John McCain - can negotiate from a position of strength and proven ability - because he's already earned the trust . . .respect . . . and admiration of our friends and allies around the world? And I suspect he has the attention of those who would oppose us.

By the time Cindy and family (and Jack!) came out, the crowd was primed. Then John McCain gave the speech he's been waiting years to give: accepting the nomination. With an attempt by Code Pink to disrupt the speech promptly drowned by the crowd's "USA!" the crowd was inspired. On the rebuilt stage that thrust him among the crowd, this said it all for me:

I fell in love with my country when I was a prisoner in someone else’s. I loved it not just for the many comforts of life here. I loved it for its decency; for its faith in the wisdom, justice and goodness of its people. I loved it because it was not just a place, but an idea, a cause worth fighting for. I was never the same again. I wasn’t my own man anymore. I was my country’s.

You had me at "country first." The crowd drowned out the last minute of the speech with a deafening roar, and I finally got my balloon drop. God bless America, indeed.

Laura Ingraham at the Republican National Coalition for Life

Yesterday I was in the presence of the "Life of the Party" - not Diddy or Lohan, it was the name of the convention event for the Republican National Coalition for Life. Expecting keynote speaker Sarah Palin, who'd been booked long prior to her ticket selection (Right to Life has its finger on the pulse?) the group sampled the ham carving station, bopped to the oompah-oompah band, and made short work of the notion that Sarah Palin's recent announcement that her daughter is pregnant has anything to do with her fitness to be Vice President. This group is fiercely Right to Palin, all the way.

According to my tablemates, the choice of Palin has galvanized the party in a way no other choice would have. That notion was solidified by the line up of speakers which included legendary ERA opponent Phyllis Schlafly (who at 80-something looks incredible. She sat on the edge of the stage before the event, graciously taking pictures with everyone and couldn't have been nicer.)

Phyllis announced that Palin wasn't able to attend, but that she had a surprise replacement: Laura Ingraham. Ingraham commanded the stage and made a pointed case for Palin to the cheers of the crowd. To see what she said, read more.

In regard to the notion that Palin isn't popular, Ingraham said, "The people who know her best, give her an 80 to 90 percent approval rating on a regular basis."

And she furiously went after the recent media coverage of Palin saying,

You think a certain way, because the people who have all these stamps on their passports who are so much smarter than we are, if you believe those things. . . what we see now is all these journalists, and all these people on the left - boosters of the Obama campaign - which is pretty much everyone at MSNBC. . . they're all for equal rights for women aren't they? Women who weren't aborted. They're for women's empowerment, and for women succeeding in men's professions. Oh, really? Then why, oh why, are you treating this woman, Sarah Palin, like dirt?

She concluded to the roaring crowd, "If Sarah Palin were pro-choice, there would be no articles on the front page of the New York Times. . . There's no bigger threat to the elites in this country than a woman who's strong and who knows her conservative convictions."

Not everyone in the room was in favor of the message - see what happened when a Code Pink protester took the stage with the legendary Phyllis Schlafly. Watch two seconds into the video as tiny dynamo Phyllis slams down the mic so the woman can't be heard. Everyone around me yesterday dug that move. The crowd then burst into spontaneous song, "God Bless America," while the protester was swiftly dispatched.

After the second group of protesters hit later on in the program Phyllis said, "Well! They don't have an argument so they just have to make a scene."

Laura Ingraham Says, "Yes!" Palin Is Being Treated Differently

I'm shaking right now, I'm so excited. I just saw Phyllis Schlafly (the political activist known for her best-selling book A Choice, Not An Echo as well as her outspoken opposition to the Equal Rights Amendment) speak at the Republican National Coalition for Life event! And though Gov. Sarah Palin was supposed to speak as well, they had a pretty good pinch hitter - Laura Ingraham. I can't believe I was in the front row. I mean, I did graduate work on the rhetoric of Phyllis Schlafly. Wow.

I have so much to say about the event, what she said, how many times Code Pink made it on stage, how they were sung from the room with "God Bless America" by a bunch of star-spangled Republicans full of love, and how well Phyllis handled it, and I will! Soon! I'm dashing off to the convention hall now, but let's just say everyone in that room today agrees that Gov. Palin is being treated differently because she's a woman - and they're fired up and ready to vote for her all the more.
