Olympic Sponsors Responsible for Human Rights Violations?

Pro-Tibet groups are joining together to call out the corporate sponsors of the Beijing Olympics. The groups say that unless the companies use their influence to pressure China, they are complicit in a humanitarian disaster.

Twelve global sponsors, including Coca Cola, General Electric, McDonald's, Visa, Johnson & Johnson and Omega have paid a combined $80 million for the four year exclusive sponsorship deal. Activists explain that together these companies have a GDP equal to Canada's, the world's eighth largest economy. Thus, they can wield a lot of influence.

Do you expect sponsors to get involved in global politics, considering they work with governments, employ lobbying firms, and maintain international presences?

Are human rights more than politics, therefore giving everyone an obligation to pressure China, including corporations and consumers? Or, should the sponsors be commended for supporting the Olympic movement, which would be impossible without them?

What Is the Clinton Global Initiative?

This week heads of state, nonprofit leaders, and philanthropists met for the fourth annual meeting of the Clinton Global Initiative (CGI). By gathering global leaders, the ex-Pres hopes they will devise and implement concrete solutions to some of the world's biggest challenges. Since 2005, CGI has committed $30 billion to programs that have impacted 200 million lives in more than 150 countries.

Some of the highlights from this year have included:

Bono spoke out about global priorities: "It is extraordinary to me that you can find $700 billion to save Wall Street and the entire G-8 can't find $25 billion to save 25,000 children who die every day of preventable disease and hunger."
Wyclef Jean's foundation committed to providing hot school meals for 14,000 poor children, food for 20,000 families a month, thousands of new agriculture jobs, micro-enterprise grants for 165 small businesses, 36,000 farmers with seed, fertilizer, and training, and implementation of a broad communications campaign to engage international and local Haitian musicians in the Together for Haiti Campaign.
Al Gore was joined at the opening session by Clinton, Queen Rania of Jordan, President Ellen Johnson-Sirleaf of Liberia, Bono and E. Neville Isdell, chairman of Coca-Cola Co.'s board. Gore called for civil disobedience against new coal plants.
Lance Armstrong, who is planning to race in next year's Tour de France, pledged $8 million to a global awareness campaign for cancer, including a meeting that would convene in Paris after the tour.

This tattoo artist found out 26 years after he had this Chinese lettering tattooed to his chest that it says...Coca Cola. Whoops. (He thought it was his name in Chinese letters.) He was in Thailand and someone asked him why he was advertising Coke on his chest. Hey, at least it doesn't say "I wish I'd stop menstruating." Click here to read more.

I don't agree with the order of these bad slogan translations, but I agree they all suck!

13. Parker ballpoint pens in Mexico. "It won't leak in your pocket and embarrass you" = "It won't leak in your pocket and make you pregnant."

12. Scandinavian vacuum manufacturer Electrolux used the following in an American campaign: "Nothing Sucks like an Electrolux."

11. Clairol's "Mist Stick," a curling iron in Germany = "Manure Stick."

10. Coors' Spanish campaign for "Turn It Loose" = "Suffer From Diarrhea."

The Case Against Coke

Is Coke about to get canned? A 27-year-old Russian woman recently sued the soft drink company for her Coke addiction- and won! She claims to have acquired her addiction by participating in a promotional offer that traded bottle caps for prizes. At trial, exhibit A was one of the inflatable mattresses awarded to her. Exhibits B, C, and D consisted of other crap prizes that most people would repackage and use as Christmas gifts for third cousin relatives. Natalya Kashuba, however, drank around 3 liters a day for 5 years in order to win herself a pile of worthless junk, not to mention an invaluable chronic gastrointestinal condition. Because Coca Cola failed to warn its consumers of potential health risks, the court made Coke cough up some cash in an unprecedented ruling that could inspire many more suits to follow. Hmm...is Coke on the verge of broke?
