Cats get stuck up in trees all the time, but canines? They're too doggone busy sniffing and peeing on fire hydrants for that kind of trouble. Cody, however, climbs trees with the best of 'em and unlike her cat counterparts, she doesn't get stuck. Falling, on the other hand, is quite another matter... (Unlike banana twisting, this is the stuff Guinness World Records should be covering, right?)

I once had a dog who had the most elaborate and creative ways of escaping the backyard when he had the urge. We could never figure out how he always got away without damaging the lawn and digging underneath the fence. A magic carpet maybe? Silly us...

Tree-Sitters Climb Down:
After a 21-month occupation, four remaining tree-sitters in an oak grove on the UC Berkeley campus, climbed down and into police custody. School officials had cut off food and water supplies Monday and were prepared to remove the activists using force. The tree-sitters were trying to stop the construction of a $125 million sports center which threatened 42 trees on campus.

Quake Shakes Iran:
A 6.1 magnitude earthquake has hit southern Iran near the site of a large Iranian oil refinery, injuring 22 and killing three. Officials fear the quake damaged older parts in the refinery. Iran is the world's fourth largest oil exporter, the refinery struck processes 320,000 barrels a day.

More Calling Suicide Hotline:
More Americans are calling the government's suicide hotline, 47,000 of them in the last month alone. The line receives a 10 percent increase every month, which the staff attributes to more people knowing about it, than an increase in the suicidal. In 2005, the last year of the data, there were more than 32,600 suicide deaths.
US Deficit at $438 Billion:
The US budget deficit is set to reach $438 billion in 2009 according to Congressional Budget Office estimates. The figure doesn't take into account government costs associated with taking over Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac. The previous record for deficit was $413 billion in 2004. Last year's deficit was $161 billion.

Santa Scars Children For Life

This is what people get when they start dragging Christmas out before Thanksgiving. (Is it just me, or is Christmas music playing earlier and earlier in the season these days?) Santa's doing some promotional thing by climbing a wall, his beard gets stuck in the rope, he's gotta cut the beard off, and embittered children watching down below are never the same again.

Get Ready For the First California Pole-Dance Championship

I have no doubt that pole dancing, as a press release for California's first pole-dance championship next month puts it, "requires strength, agility, flexibility, and endurance." Nor do I believe that pole dancing is "just posing against a pole" but rather involves "spinning, inverts, climbing, and power holds."

But what does it mean to elevate to a sport an act that originated in strip clubs and which symbolizes a woman's role as a sex object? We'd pause (at least, I hope we would!) if there were a competitive lap-dancing competition. But a similar argument could be made for making it a competition: a woman needs strong calf and thigh muscles to "dance" over a man's lap.

Pole-dance exercise classes have gone mainstream, so it's no surprise pole dancing has turned competitive. Women get enough reminders from the media that our jobs are to be sexually alluring - why not actually just learn a sport or emulate the acrobats who perform for Cirque du Soleil? At least a high-wire act doesn't come with symbolic baggage.
