Is That an Endorsement? Angelina Hints at Vote For Family

Actress and UN Goodwill Ambassador Angelina Jolie has warmed up to Barack Obama. The mother of six told German Vanity Fair:

Obama is fighting for international justice, he wants to intervene militarily in genocides abroad, and he wants to close down Guantanamo Bay. They are things which could move me to vote for him, not his roots. Of course, an American president like Barack Obama would be great for my family.

Stopping short of a full endorsement, Angelina said the fact that Obama would be a good example for her family isn't "reason enough to vote for him."

The support for some of Obama positions strays from her previous hesitation to bring home the troops from Iraq. In February she wrote in an op-ed: "As for the question of whether the surge is working, I can only state what I witnessed: U.N. staff and those of non-governmental organizations seem to feel they have the right set of circumstances to attempt to scale up their programs. And when I asked the troops if they wanted to go home as soon as possible, they said that they miss home but feel invested in Iraq."

Angelina's dad John Voight is currently starring in American Carol and has been campaigning for John McCain.

He's Back! Diddy's all Halloween-y - Sarah Palin "Scares Him"

Diddy's back with a new video blog, and though it's not as long on nonsense as his last offering it's equally (and arguably) as short on substance. At least it's seasonally appropriate! Starring in his own horror movie, Diddy plays the clip of Katie and Sarah discussing newspapers, and Palin's reluctance to name a specific paper. The rest of the video is Diddy under the covers, in a not un-amusing homage to The Blair Witch Project, he cowers and says things like, "She's worse than the Boogeyman."

The meat of his argument seems to be, "You could become the president of the United States. Did you hear the answer to that question? John McCain is 72." Though he opts not to go further with specifics. Much like Palin opting not to reveal certain media titles by which to possibly present a bias? Similar, Diddy? His claim isn't without some basis in fact, 30 percent of all Vice Presidents have gone on to takeover the top spot - though it would have been a nice addition to his argument if he'd included it. Maybe in the extended director's cut.

His grand finale, "I'm not coming out the covers. It safe underneath the covers. . . if I stay underneath the covers, she won't become president," is punctuated with a "Sarah!" His heart might be in the right place it's allegedly about getting out the vote - but I'd love to know a little bit more about why he's so scared of Sarah Palin. He caps it with an appeal to register to vote and the deadline (which in some states is sooner than the 6th, so check for yourself.) Who do you think is scarier - Sarah - or Diddy?

George Clooney to Help Ex-Pats Raise Money For Obama

George Clooney plans to host a fundraiser for Barack Obama . . . in Switzerland. On Sept. 2, guests will pay $1,000 to hear George speak in Geneva, Switzerland. After the chat, 75 lucky guests, willing to pay $10,000, will dine at the home of Charles Adams, a member of Obama's ~~International~~ National Finance Committee.

George isn't clueless of the pejorative "celebrity"-calling aimed at Obama. Back in March, he said that his own celebrity status could be a political liability to a politician like Obama. But I guess George's reluctance to campaign for his favorite politicians doesn't make him scared of raising money for them!

Even though he's staying off the stump, do you think news of George's fundraiser, in Europe no less, could hurt Obama?

Will Smith Supports Barack Obama, AKA His Next Movie Role

Will Smith says that Barack Obama is only the second political figure he has ever thrown his support behind - the first being Nelson Mandela (Will just helped celebrate Mandela's 90th birthday). BBC got the details about the actor's endorsement, while Will was in London promoting his new film this week.

On why he supports Obama: "I travel around the world a lot, and I was kind of used to people being happy when the Americans showed up. That sort of changed over the last eight years. So I'm excited about the new possibilities of hope and change that Barack is bringing."

On whether celebrities should share their politics: "Individuals have to decide what they want to do. I think I'm a pretty good judge if someone's a good person. So I just lend my support to people that I believe are good people."

Who's joining Alec Baldwin in making promises of becoming an expatriate.

If McCain gets in, it's going to be very, very dangerous. It's a critical time, but I have faith in the American people. If they prove me wrong, I'll be checking out a move to Italy. Maybe Canada, I don't know. We're at an abyss.

Sean Penn Is the President of Cannes!

While he wasn't leading the revolution against France's smoking ban, Sean Penn, this year's president of the Cannes Film Festival jury, had some mixed up words for another (would be) president. Penn, who has been an imaginative critic of George W. Bush and his soiled blood soaked underwear, gave Barack Obama both an endorsement and a disparagement all the way from glamorous Cannes, France.

He offered his opinion:

"I’m certainly endorsing the excitement and hope that Barack Obama is inspiring." Penn then criticized Obama for “some phenomenally unconstitutional and inhuman votes on his part. [. . .] I hope that he will understand, if he is the nominee, the dangerous disillusionment that will happen if he doesn’t become a greater man than he has ever been.”

Penn, who will lead in selecting the winner of the Palm D'Or, also acknowledged that film is inherently connected to current events. On this issue, he said:

"One way or another, when we select the Palme d'Or winner, I think we are going to feel very confident that the film-maker who made the film is very aware of the times in which he or she lives."

Do you agree that people will inevitably be disappointed with Obama? Are the best films those that are in touch with the times, or those that let us escape reality? Does Sean Penn have any idea what he is talking about?

Jack Nicholson Loves to Be Behind a Woman

Following the release of his video Clinton endorsement/character montage, Jack Nicholson did an interview with MTV News.

Here are some of the highlights:

His favorite Hillary Clinton Policy?

"One of the things I heard in Hillary's campaign is she intends to put it all on the Internet and make it a completely transparent government."

Jack's opinion on the talking heads?

" It's disturbing to me how gleeful they [the media] are at her imagined demise."

On the experience question?

"'I'm a person who understands what experience, which is often a euphemism for connections, can mean in the big old world. She's been there. I was raised by women. I know how tough they are when the tough gets going."

"I love the inspiration of Senator Obama, but we have a representative republic for this very reason. In the original democracy in [ancient Greece], everybody voted and that was it. They realized they didn't want the hot song of the week to take over the country. The same is true of these superdelegates. These superdelegates are there to make democracy more thoughtful. You can't just discount super-delegates for one reason or another. These are the rules of the Democratic Party."

Do Celebs Influence Your Politics?

We're not the only ones with vote fever today! Even Diddy is out spreading his political message. Celebs from Robert DeNiro to Garrison Keillor are also declaring their support for candidates this week. And of course who can forget Oprah for Obama, Chuck Norris for Huckabee, and Stallone for McCain? But here's the question: Does the opinion of the famous influence your vote?

Interestingly, according to a recent survey in US Weekly, 90 percent of respondents said "no!" All of the Oprahs and Chuck Norrises in the world don't matter a lick once the voting booth curtain is closed. What about you?

Are You Less Likely to Buy From Someone Beautiful?

A recent study out of Australia concludes that young women are less likely to buy something if they think the sales people in the store are more beautiful than they.

Because women are "biologically competitive," says Bianca Price of the University of South Australia, these tentative shoppers perceive beautiful women as "direct social threats" even if the product has nothing to do with beauty. In the end, they would rather buy from someone "unattractive." (I wonder if this study informed the "unattractive" sales staff that they were part of some unflattering research!)

This conclusion, she continues, may contradict the success certain brands have when they get beautiful celebrities to endorse their product, but according to Price, "[w]omen may not consider celebrities a direct social threat, but they might consider the girl at their local shopping center to be one.”

So let me get this straight - women are biologically determined to be competitive with each other; women are so intimidated by beautiful women that they won't buy something from them; and if you're shopping, you're a woman, but if you're part of the sales staff, you're a "girl." I'm not buying it!

Do Endorsements Factor Into Your Voting Decision?

Is it the voting equivalent of jumping off a cliff? If well-known people/newspapers/terrorist organizations are endorsing a candidate, does it make you want to do it too? With less than two weeks left, endorsements of varying pedigrees and celebrity are piling up.

Though Colin Powell's big Obama announcement caught attention, McCain is not without former secretary of state approval - four former secretaries (Haig, Kissinger, Eagleburger, and Baker) have all pledged support, as well as Powell's son - and a long list of others, including 100 generals and admirals, more than 30 governors, and fairly meaty list of celeb-types. Then the news yesterday of a possibly less-luminary endorsement: supporters of al Qaeda. They see McCain as the better choice to exhaust the US's fiscal and martial resources by continuing the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan.

Obama's list of endorsements may have garnered more attention than McCain's lately, but interestingly one of the newest additions to his endorsement tally also comes from the Middle East: Iran. According to the speaker of the Iranian parliament, his country prefers Obama as they see him as more "flexible." Then there's the breakdown of newspaper endorsements: Obama is leading McCain 121-42 in newspaper endorsements, including 48-28 in states that went for Bush in 2004.
