The owner of Casa Diablo in Portland, OR, was having a hard time selling locals on his Mexican vegan food. So he turned his restaurant into the world's first vegan strip club. Apparently, Portland has more strip clubs than any other city, not to mention a large vegan population. This video is brilliant in so many ways, not the least of which is this quote: "Even the meat-eating girls get to eat here free, so when they eat our food, they get turned on to vegan food."

The Obama Girls Go Green at School

On Friday, CasaSugar let you know about the American Institute of Architecture's offer to help the White House become an international model of energy efficiency. If President-elect Barack Obama takes AIA up on the offer, he'll really be getting somewhere with his aforementioned green building goals. But, as it turns out, Obama has already begun to walk the walk: after much ado, he and Michelle have decided to send their daughters, Malia and Sasha, to an environmentally friendly, LEED-platinum school, the Sidwell Friends School in D.C. When Sidwell decided to construct a new middle school, which was completed in September 2006, the school opted for sustainable design to express its commitment to environmental stewardship. Some of its eco-friendly components include constructed wetlands, water-efficient landscaping, use of local, regional, and recycled materials, a green roof, natural ventilation, and solar panels. In March 2007, it was awarded a LEED Platinum rating, making it not only the first K-12 school in the United States to have such a rating, but also the first LEED Platinum building in all of D.C.

Sidwell Friends also offsets electricity and gas for all buildings on both campuses as well as employee travel through the purchase of carbon offsets, and 50 percent of its energy purchased is from wind energy. The school also practices green housekeeping, food service, and composting. Now, that's walking the talk! Maybe Sidwell Friends' architects, KieranTimberlake, can show the White House a thing or two.

OMG: It's International Nachos Day!

You'd think the self-described Queen of Nachos would just know in her gut about the following, but alas, this is how I was informed that it was International Nachos Day. A transcript of this morning's Blackberry text messages, verbatim:

CasaSugar: Do you know what today is? It is the day that nachos were supposedly invented!

GiggleSugar: Holy crap!!! I am on it.

So without further ado, the legend of how nachos were born: 65 years ago, a genius maitre d' named Ignacio "Nacho" Anaya (perhaps my firstborn son's name?), was just doing his thing at a restaurant in Piedras Negras, Mexico near the Texas border. As legend has it, some Americans came in right after the chef had stepped out, so ol' Nacho Anaya whipped up a tasty treat of chips and cheese melted under the broiler - with some spicy jalepenos thrown on top just to be jaunty. And there you have it, my friends, the story of nachos. Celebrate this hallowed day, Oct. 21, by eating a pile of cheesy chips and saluting its inventor! I know I will. Introducing Anne, From Little Britain

Little Britain is a hilarious sketch comedy show about the "idiosyncrasies" of the English. I've never seen it before, but CasaSugar sent me this insane compilation of clips featuring a character named Anne, who appears to be a very tall man-woman in a house-dress and fetching pink cardigan sweater. Anne has some mysterious disorder which causes her to cluck like a peeved chicken (ehn ehn EHNNN!), that is, unless she's on the phone. This clip may turn you into a nutter, but you have to watch it till the end...

Stop Everything and Watch a Cat Sew a Scrunchy!

Did I get your attention?! Good. I am breaking my rule of "videos longer than 3 minutes only on the weekend." CasaSugar sent this down the transom, and from the moment I laid eyes on cat paws using a sewing machine to sew a scrunchy (or "chou chou"), I was sold. Throw in some dance beats? Positively hooked. I feel like dancing, and crafting and meowing all at the same time. Wheeeee!

Japan Unveils a Unicycle Robot

My first reaction to this was - uh, of course they did! And then, it's about time! After that, it was, the world has been waiting with bated breath! But seriously, is this not the cutest little unicycle-riding robot you've ever seen? And to make the whole thing even stranger, the 11-pound, 20-inch-tall robot Seiko-chan adheres to gender stereotypes. According to this news report, "she blushes while showing her balancing skill." W.T.F. (Thanks for updating me on all things robot, CasaSugar!)
