What's Prison Like? 8 Tips For White Collar Criminals

The New York Post reports Bernie Madoff's niece Shana, a compliance officer at his infamous firm, "signed a lot of documents" during her tenure. The possible convicté has been asking around the streets of Manhattan's downtown as to what, exactly, is prison like.

Good question! She's summoned Larry Levine, founder of Wall Street Prison Consultants and former inmate #587,1635, to take his fedtime 101 crash course for the one-time price of $999 (call now!). Learn more at his website that asks "Going from the exchange floor to the prison yard?" Maybe, Larry, it may be.

Since not every white collar criminal can afford (some aren't very good) top-notch services, I thought I'd round up the Internet's best tips on what to expect when you're serving time. Ready? You will be.

Order magazines subscriptions: There's no Internet in jail, if WikiHow can be believed. If you self-surrender, you'll have time to order them beforehand.
Go to the dentist! While dental care is offered in prison, you do not want it.
Lose the nostalgia: Focus on your prison life, not on the outside world. Get involved!
Talk the talk: Levine is the process of penning a prison-slang dictionary. He recommends Shana learn words like "kiester," a verb meaning "to smuggle something like cigarettes or batteries using your back end."

Get new glasses: The choice of frames are awful in prison.
Don't believe appearances: White-collar jail may not look like the stark barbwire colonies of high-security prisons, but the game is the same. Expect loss of privacy, cavity searches, standing in line outside for 90 or so minutes (weather not permitting), and food that makes your college cafeteria look like three Michelin stars.
Emotions: Don't express them! Guards and other inmates prey on emotions. If they know what angers you, they will manipulate you; if they know what makes you happy, they will take it away.
Get a good prison book! There are many out there; consider Chicken Soup For the Prisoner's Soul.

Principal Tackles Lunch Duty With a Music Vid

Mr. Skretta is a high school principal who can't get his students to pick up their rubbish at lunchtime. So he does what any dedicated principal would do: He makes a music vid on location in the school cafeteria. But there's one small problem: "Soulja Boy" was so five months ago and nobody (who's anybody) pays it any attention anymore - nobody except "yooooou," Mr. Skretta. Can someone please trash this vid before it stinks up the place?

Eddie Izzard Does Darth Vader at the Death Star Canteen

We all need to eat, right? Even his Lord Darth Vader. Well, comedian Eddie Izzard riffs on what it would be like for Darth to do something as mundane (and beneath his dignity) as go to a cafeteria (ewww, the wet trays!). Then someone Lego-izes it. On top of that, the Death Star Canteen is manned by someone who won't just hand him his Penne al Arrabiata and keeps calling him Jeff. Jeff Vader! This is almost as bad as the time 'ol Darth's brother, Chad Vader, worked at a supermarket. . .

Headline: Teen Shot in Tennessee School

A 17 year-old student was shot at a school in Memphis, Tennessee, this morning. The incident involved two students from Mitchell High School. The victim, a 12th grader, was shot in the school's cafeteria and is critically injured. The suspected shooter, an 11th grader at the school, is currently in custody.

The high school is not on lockdown. Parents are arriving to check on their children, but parents are being asked to be patient.

On the Newsstand: Huge U.S. Embassy in Iraq

A recent Vanity Fair article about the new American Embassy in Iraq caught my attention. $600 million of U.S. tax money is being spent on building a fortified America in Baghdad. I couldn't believe I was unaware of such a massive and expensive project.

The article is truly fascinating so just read more.

It is the world's largest, most expensive embassy, the size of Vatican City.
It will cost $1.2 billion a year to run.
Contractors, not allowed to employ Iraqi workers for security reasons, import workers from Bangladesh and Nepal.
It is self-sustaining, with its own power generators, water, telephone, fuel and sewage systems.
American life has been imported. It has tennis courts, a landscaped pool, a bomb resistant gym, department stores, a beauty salon, a night club, a movie theater, etc.
The cafeteria serves free food including American comfort food and low calorie options.
It is located in the Green Zone, surrounded by layers of check points and blast walls.

Reading this definitely conjured up a range of emotions-I couldn't decide whether to be angry, impressed, or embarrassed. What do you think?

Too Shy To Be Noticed By The Guy

There is this guy who I go to school with that I really like, but I can't even seem to talk to him because I am so shy. I get embarrassed just by looking at him. What can I do to get his attention and go out with him? Shy Sheryl

Dear Shy Sheryl
You've got to get up the courage to go and talk to him. Unless you become prom queen, the school's top athlete or invent the next best thing to cafeteria food, you are probably just blending into the crowd. Does he have any idea at all that you like him? Do you have any classes with him? Check out some of these other posts by DearSugar readers: Shy Girl on Campus, Work Hottie and Gym Jitters. Hopefully these will help. They've all got similar problems as you do. It's going to take confidence for you to approach him. Practice what you are going to say to a friend and see how it goes. Start by just flirting with him over the next few days. Smile at him when he passes by and see what happens when you can catch his eye.
