Yay or Nay? Albright on Bush's Legacy

Former Secretary of State Madeline Albright recently characterized the Bush Administration as one of America's "worst presidencies." In D.C. promoting her latest book, Albright told a crowd:

“This is a purely practical point here, and I think there’s a lot of work to be done. And I think the judgment is that this is one of the worst presidencies we’ve had and people will wonder what it is that the role of the vice president is.”

Specifically, Albright criticized Bush for not doing enough to take on climate change and energy issues.

Headline: US and Iran - Battle of Boats and Videos

During last night's Republican debate, Fred Thompson let loose on the recent US/Iran skirmish at sea, saying, "I think one more step and they would have been introduced to those virgins that they're looking forward to seeing." Ron Paul then sharply accused his rivals of wanting to start World War III over Iran. Mounting recent events could suggest that tensions are indeed rising between the US and Iran.

Beginning last Sunday, this 30-minute encounter between Iranian patrol boats and US Naval vessels sparked a controversy now extending past the Strait of Hormuz. According to the Pentagon, five armed Iranian speedboats approached three US Navy warships in international waters. As they maneuvered aggressively, one of the Iranians allegedly issued a radio threat saying: "I am coming to you. You will explode after a few minutes."

The Pentagon released a video on Tuesday, in order to support its version of the events. Iran claimed the video was fabricated, and just yesterday released its own video to prove that no confrontation occurred. However, the two clips don't necessarily contradict each other.

President Bush has called the Iranian actions a "provocative act." It seems to me that tensions are rising between Iran and the US. I hope that a 30-minute encounter isn't enough to ignite a full-blown confrontation between Iran and the US.

The First Family Is Cast. Do You Want to See the Bush Movie?

The Bushes, Sr. now have their official doppelgängers. James Cromwell and Ellen Burstyn have been tapped to play the parents of 43. Oliver Stone has been hard at work on casting the whole first family for his movie about George W. Bush's formative years. George W. and Laura have already been cast. The movie starts filming in April and is supposed to be out in time for the election, which could have an impact on the outcome.

Bush Daughters Cement Their Legacy as Likable

I've always had a soft spot for first-twins Jenna and Barbara Bush. It's got to be hard growing up under so much scrutiny, but they seem warmhearted and never resentful of the American people. People magazine interviewed Jenna and Barbara about the past eight years, and about what's next for their family. Here are some highlights.

Jenna on how her dad has changed: Eight years ago, my dad was a very popular Texas governor. And I think in Texas, he was able to get a lot done because he was friends with Democrats and Republicans - Democrats supported him. So he was - we were very optimistic. I think maybe I was a little naive about how people would treat him. But he's never wavered in his decisions and he's the same as he was when we were little, his ethics. So that's something to be proud of in itself. . . . He looks a little bit older, obviously. He's been under a lot of stress, so we're ready for him to go back to Texas and be warmly received, I'm sure.
Barbara on advice for the Obama girls: We gave them a tour. We were here when we were seven, which is Sasha's age, when our grandfather was president, and so we know how fun it was to be that age in this house. And so we showed them our little secret, fun places.
Jenna on the Obama girls: [T]hey're a lot younger than we are, cuter than we are - all younger and cuter. We're old news.

"Impeach Bush" Ornament to Hang on White House Tree

Santa may still have to decide whether President Bush has been naughty or nice this year, but an artist invited to decorate an ornament for the White House Christmas tree has made up her mind. Deborah Lawrence, a Bush opponent and Seattle artist, decided to whip up some holiday activism and create an "Impeach Bush" ornament.

Through a local art organization, Deborah's Congressman, Jim McDermott, invited her submit his district's ornament. She told the Washington Post that despite feeling sick from the idea of painting a decoration for the Bush White House, she decided it was the perfect opportunity to highlight Rep. McDermott's support of Bush's impeachment. On the ornament she also features her state's 1919 labor strike, suffrage movement, and the 1999 WTO protests. Laura Bush's press secretary said there were no plans to reject the ornament and that Deborah is still invited to a White House reception for the artists.

Bush Plans Return to Texas on Inauguration Day

Considering the anticipation and preparation for Barack Obama's Inauguration it comes as no surprise that President Bush is ready to jet out of town. The White House has announced that President Bush will go straight to Midland, Texas after leaving Washington on Inauguration Day.

The President and First Lady Laura Bush will leave Andrews Air Force Base and head to Midland (which is Laura's hometown) for a welcome event. They will fly in one of the jets he used as Air Force One during his presidency.

The couple plans to spend their first night away from the White House at their ranch in Crawford.

Obama, Bush, and Ex-Presidents Have Historic Lunch

President-elect Barack Obama, President Bush, Jimmy Carter, George H.W. Bush, and Bill Clinton (that's all of the surviving past presidents) met up for lunch at the White House today in a historic gathering. Collectively the bunch has more than 30 years of presidential experience. Bush, who sat down with Obama recently, said:

One message that I have, and I think we all share, is that we want you to succeed. Whether we're Democrat or Republican, we care deeply about this country.

Obama said he was grateful for the opportunity to get "advice, good counsel and fellowship" from the group. A White House spokeswoman said the last time all of the living presidents got together at the White House was in 1981. Apparently, all five men, including Clinton and Carter, who are not exactly friendly with one another, were on their best behavior and put aside differences for the day. Jenna Bush Dishes Wedding Details, and Why She Said No to the White House

Jenna Bush was on the Today show with her mom yesterday discussing plans for her upcoming wedding and finally clearing up why it will not take place at the White House. The Pennsylvania Avenue option was of course available to Jenna, but she turned it down saying, “Texas is home to me. . . I did live in Washington, but I never lived in the White House."

The celebration is to take place at sunset on the Crawford, Texas ranch with a guest list of about 200 people. For you detail junkies, Jenna sets the scene:

I guess it maybe says we’re crazy. I wanted to be at home, and I wanted it to feel natural and I wanted it to be a private thing. It’s the one day of my life - it happens once - that I want to have a private time with Henry and my family. Plus, I’m not that glamorous. I’m more an outdoor type.

Her gown, described as simple and casual, is an Oscar de la Renta creation of embroidered organza with matte beading and a small train. She will have 14 attendants and her twin sister Barbara Bush will be her maid of honor. The party will wear short chiffon dresses by Lela Rose, a Texas designer, in green, blue, yellow and lavender.

When Jenna is not preparing for her wedding she is promoting a children’s book she wrote with her mother and First Lady, Laura, entitled Read All About It, which is on sale now.

The husband-to-be is Henry Hager, son of John Hager, a political heavyweight in Virginia politics and assistant secretary of the US Department of Education. He's currently completing graduate work at the Darden School of Business Administration at the University of Virginia. Henry met Jenna while working on the 2004 Bush re-election campaign. After the wedding, it's rumored the newlyweds will move into a 128-year-old, two-bedroom, two-bath townhouse on the south side of Baltimore that they purchased for $440,000.
