Oliver Stone Elects Josh Brolin to Play George W. Bush

With just about a year to go in the presidency of George W. Bush, Oliver Stone has set his sights on a biopic about the nation's 43rd president. Josh Brolin, fresh off his turn in No Country for Old Men, has signed on to play the title role.

Bush is sure to be a controversial project coming from Stone, who hasn't exactly been the most subtle critic of the president's administration. But he told Variety his personal feelings about Bush weren't the point. He said:

Here, I'm the referee, and I want a fair, true portrait of the man. How did Bush go from an alcoholic bum to the most powerful figure in the world? It's like Frank Capra territory on one hand, but I'll also cover the demons in his private life, his bouts with his dad and his conversion to Christianity, which explains a lot of where he is coming from. It includes his belief that God personally chose him to be president of the United States, and his coming into his own with the stunning, preemptive attack on Iraq. It will contain surprises for Bush supporters and his detractors.

Well, it's not the most neutral statement I've ever heard (nor is the project's development title of "Misunderestimated"), but I'm still curious to see what Stone will do with this one. I'm also eager to see Brolin go from outlaw to Commander in Chief. I wouldn't have pictured it at first, but Stone pointed out that while "Josh is actually better looking than Bush," they do share a certain old Hollywood swagger.

Yay or Nay? Albright on Bush's Legacy

Former Secretary of State Madeline Albright recently characterized the Bush Administration as one of America's "worst presidencies." In D.C. promoting her latest book, Albright told a crowd:

“This is a purely practical point here, and I think there’s a lot of work to be done. And I think the judgment is that this is one of the worst presidencies we’ve had and people will wonder what it is that the role of the vice president is.”

Specifically, Albright criticized Bush for not doing enough to take on climate change and energy issues.

Headline: US and Iran - Battle of Boats and Videos

During last night's Republican debate, Fred Thompson let loose on the recent US/Iran skirmish at sea, saying, "I think one more step and they would have been introduced to those virgins that they're looking forward to seeing." Ron Paul then sharply accused his rivals of wanting to start World War III over Iran. Mounting recent events could suggest that tensions are indeed rising between the US and Iran.

Beginning last Sunday, this 30-minute encounter between Iranian patrol boats and US Naval vessels sparked a controversy now extending past the Strait of Hormuz. According to the Pentagon, five armed Iranian speedboats approached three US Navy warships in international waters. As they maneuvered aggressively, one of the Iranians allegedly issued a radio threat saying: "I am coming to you. You will explode after a few minutes."

read more. The Pentagon released a video on Tuesday, in order to support its version of the events. Iran claimed the video was fabricated, and just yesterday released its own video to prove that no confrontation occurred. However, the two clips don't necessarily contradict each other. President Bush has called the Iranian actions a "provocative act." It seems to me that tensions are rising between Iran and the US. I hope that a 30-minute encounter isn't enough to ignite a full-blown confrontation between Iran and the US. Source

We certainly expect something like the iPhone to have revolutionary touch capabilities, but what about a retro radio? Bush has just come out with this shiny black DAB digital radio with matching handle which features touch buttons instead of standard push buttons, giving it that perfect mix of vintage and modern tech.

The TR04DABBLK, which was displayed on engadget has ten DAB and FM preset stations and shows two line LCD scrolling text with a blue LED display. Each costs around $90.

Presidential Yoga?

OK, I thought I've seen every yoga book in and out of print. But this one, I never thought I'd see the likes.

George W. Bush? Doing Yoga? What a novel idea. The man running our country sure could use some relaxation. I'm sure he'll agree that Yoga is great at relieving tense and tight muscles, and calming the nerves. And an hour and a half class is a great time to bring your attention inward, meditate on pertinent issues and concerns, and offer up peace to the universe.

Thanks Dub-ya, for creating Bush Yoga. With you breathing and stretching, the world is sure to be a better place.

Why Did Susan G. Komen For the Cure Cut Off Funding to Planned Parenthood?

For years Susan G. Komen for the Cure has provided Planned Parenthood grants for breast cancer screenings. It recently decided to cut off the women's health provider, causing outrage among many supporters of both groups. Petitions to Komen to change its mind have been circulating on Facebook and across the Internet.

After Komen's decision became public, Planned Parenthood told supporters that "after facing pressure from anti-women's health political organizations, the Susan G. Komen for the Cure Foundation has announced that it is ending future funding for lifesaving breast cancer screenings and breast health education at Planned Parenthood health centers." Supporters know Planned Parenthood provides crucial services besides abortion, and critics of Komen's choice to stop funding assert the irony of cutting off life-saving cancer screenings to show you're pro-life.

As evidence that the decision was politically motivated, women's health activists could point to a recent backlash against Komen from the Evangelical Christian group LifeWay. LifeWay was selling pink Bibles to benefit Komen, when it discovered the breast cancer group gave money to Planned Parenthood. LifeWay immediately pulled the Bibles, getting the attention of pro-life activists. In addition, Komen's founder and CEO, Nancy G. Brinker, is a longtime Republican with ties to the Bush family, and the foundation's newly hired vice president is a former politician with known pro-life positions. Also, Komen cited a controversial investigation of Planned Parenthood in Congress started by a staunchly pro-life member.

Even so, Susan G. Komen's founder and CEO maintained its decision to not fund organizations under investigation is part of a broad effort to reorganize donations and make them more efficient. See Susan G. Komen for the Cure's Nancy G. Brinker explain the foundation's decision below.

Lauren Bush: How Busy Women Can Find Time to Give Back

Privileged and beautiful, Lauren Bush, the niece of former President George W. Bush, is also a big philanthropist. TrèsSugar recently sat down with Bush for an interview, in which the model spilled the deets about FEED, a project she founded to fight world hunger. Bush gave advice on how busy women can find the time to give back:

"I feel lucky that I've been able to integrate giving back into my job, so it's all one in the same, which is not necessarily the case for most. But most companies do offer opportunities to volunteer or encourage that to some extent, and if they don't, it's a thing to push for. It can be this overwhelming thing to be like, 'I need to find the cause that I'm so passionate about. I need to jump headfirst.' And at some point people might do that, but in the meantime, just dabble and learn and find small things you can do. Like my brother - this isn't small; it's actually quite huge - but he's a Big Brother. And it's changed his life, changed this little kid's life. And it's just the coolest thing. It's a big time commitment to open your life up to a kid, but he loves it. You don't always need to start your own, and nor should most people."

It's always good to start small and to be realistic about your time commitments. You need to pick activities that are doable because giving back should always feel fulfilling and not like something that you feel obligated to do.

Lauren Bush Shares Relationship Advice and Thoughts On Giving Back

Lauren Bush is much more than a pretty face and famous last name. This past weekend at Pixar Animation Studios, Lauren spoke about giving back creatively at the Intersection Event, a conference on innovation.

Before her panel, I caught up with the newlywed model and founder of FEED, a project to fight world hunger in conjunction with UN World Food Programme. She shared her relationship advice, as well as the issue she hopes women will pay more attention to and details about her upcoming FEED back. Read our interview below.

TrèsSugar: How have your relationship and career priorities changed with age?
Lauren Bush: "It's been a flow to this point. I don't think there's a perfect science to it. Maybe there is and in that case I'd love to know. I don't have kids yet, therefore I can travel more easily perhaps. I think it's about doing what you love. FEED for me is like my arm. It's like second nature. I feel like I'm in this rare awesome position where getting up to go to work isn't really work, it's exciting. If you find something you love, it melds naturally. To be an entrepreneur is all consuming. And lucky enough, my husband was an entrepreneur himself, is very entrepreneurial, so he just gets it. It's also about surrounding yourself with people who will support your passion."

TS: What piece of relationship advice would you share with young women?
LB: "Don't sweat the small stuff."

TS: Who are your female role models?
LB: There are more women now than when we started five years ago that I can look to. Sheryl Sandberg (the COO) from Facebook. I saw her speak and she's so inspiring. Also, Somali Moms, a foundation in Cambodia with this amazing woman. And Christie Brinkley and what she's been doing with Every Mother Counts is really inspiring.

Gwen, Gavin, Zuma, and Kingston Split Their Weekend Between Parties and the Park

The Stefani-Rossdale family kept to a busy schedule this weekend with plenty of time allotted for outdoor activities. Gwen and Gavin took their sons, Kingston and Zuma, to a birthday party on Saturday. Yesterday they all went to the Malibu Country Mart to check out the playground, and later visited the Troutdale ponds for some fishing. The superstar parents have spent most of the new year close to home while Gwen keeps working on new music with No Doubt, and Gavin enjoyed a short break from touring. He resumes playing hits from Bush's new album, The Sea of Memories, this Friday when the band stops by The Tonight Show to perform their latest single, Baby Come Home. Gavin resumes touring next month on Feb. 14 in Taipei, Taiwan, while Gwen could be planning a trip to the Big Apple for this year's Fashion Week. The Fall L.A.M.B. collection is schedule to hit the catwalk on Feb. 11, however, last season Gwen missed the show due to studio and family commitments on the West Coast.
