Bostonians Would Give Up Sex Over Cell Phones

What does it say about the future of the human race when people would rather give up sex for a year than go without a cell phone for the same amount of time? I guess it means that technological communication is truly becoming more important than old-fashioned face-to-face interaction, even the type of face-to-face interaction that involves having sex. Come on, people! What good is a booty call without the booty? Is sexting really better than sex?

In a survey sponsored by none other than Samsung Mobile, 31 percent of adults in Boston said they would rather give up sex for a year than go without cell phones for a year. Apparently, relying on email, hard-to-find pay phones, and immobile landlines is much more burdensome than forgoing sex.

Considering that I know people who literally sleep with their BlackBerrys, I suppose I'm not really that shocked by these results.

Two Train Crashes: Two train crashes happened within hours of each other in Chicago and Boston yesterday. In Chicago, an elevated train derailed, leaving several people hurt. Then during rush hour in Boston two commuter trains collided and derailed killing the train driver and leaving several passengers injured. Investigators are still looking into the cause of the Boston crash. The 24-year-old driver died when one train slammed into the back of another.

US Economy Grows: The Commerce Department reported today that economic growth was measured at a 0.9 percent growth rate. The growth was a slightly better pace in the first quarter, though still weak and hindered by cautious consumers hurt by housing, credit and financial problems. The growth was an improvement from the government’s initial estimate for the first quarter as well as the economy’s performance in the final quarter of last year - both saw 0.6 percent growth rate.
Suicide Bomb Kills 16 in Iraq: A suicide bomber detonated today in a crowd of police recruits in northwestern Iraq, killing at least 16 and wounding 14 others. The blast occurred in Sinjar, the town that also saw a series of suicide truck bombings that killed an estimated 500 people. No responsibility has been claimed for the latest attack, though some suspect al-Qaida in Iraq, backing up Iraqi claims that insurgents have fled to remote areas to escape a US-Iraqi offensive currently in Mosul, about 74 miles east of Sinjar.

Is the Media Closing the Door on Senator Kennedy's Recovery?

Ever since the sad news of Senator Ted Kennedy's brain tumor diagnosis broke, I've been seeing a barrage of news coverage that seems pretty postmortem. Article topics include:

The coverage makes me think media companies are rolling out their prefabricated eulogies a little too soon. In fact, if someone wasn't paying close attention, they might assume the Senator already died!

Are these reports an honor to Senator Kennedy, or disrespectful? Since he did just receive a very serious diagnosis, should the country take the opportunity to celebrate all of his achievements while he is still alive? Should the media adopt a more hopeful and positive outlook in order to support Kennedy's efforts to battle the tumor?

Would a Female Politician Get Away With This?

On Saturday, Republican State Senator Scott Brown of Massachusetts announced his candidacy for the US Senate, desiring to fill in the spot left open by Senator Edward Kennedy's passing. He is branding himself as a fiscal conservative and Washington outsider.

But as political blog Wonkette uncovered in 2007, Senator Brown had a nude centerfold spread in a 1982 issue of Cosmopolitan magazine when he was 22. In law school at Boston College when he bared all, Brown said he'd take his "America's Sexiest Man" prize money - a whopping $1,000 - and put it toward tuition.

Not many people are in an uproar around this, but I doubt if a female politician had posed nude when she was in her early twenties that she'd make it past the day she announced her candidacy. A Newsweek blogger thinks no one cares about Brown's past "because he's a dude." I guess the anti-gay marriage candidate should feel lucky these pics weren't in Playgirl!

Women Can Be More Choosy With Dates Than Men

Single women, I have good news and bad news for you. The good news: there's less competition in the dating pool for the man of your dreams than you probably thought. The bad? There's more choices for them since men are more likely to prefer one type of woman. A thin, seductive type.

Researchers at Wake Forest University classified photos of men and women, ages 18-25, as seductive, confident, thin, sensitive, stylish, curvaceous (women), muscular (men), traditional, masculine/feminine, classy, well-groomed, or upbeat in appearance. A subjective method for sure, but it was necessary to identify the common characteristics that appealed to men and women.

Overall, women showed a small preference for thin, muscular men; however, many women rated those same men as extremely unattractive. There was a great disparity among what women found attractive and unattractive. Men were much more consistent, choosing candidates who were classified as thin, seductive, and confident.

So if you have a type, know there are fewer women vying for him than you probably think. The downside, of course, is that men are more tunnel-visioned when it comes to women, adding another drop in the bucket of reasons women feel the need to conform to a societal standard of beauty. Oh, well. Maybe next study!
