What is going on with today's teens? I just read a study that said there's been a 76 percent rise in emergency room visits between 1998 -2005 among teens who are abusing ADHD drugs like Adderall. (They crush the meds, which may or may not have been prescribed to them, snort them, and can experience side effects that mimic cardiac arrest.)

And now, a news report says that not only are many teens abusing alcohol and drugs - they're delivering those substances to their systems in bizarre and harmful ways. In Phoenix, AZ, they're snorting vodka, and some teens are soaking vodka in their tampons, which, as one expert said, can damage their reproductive systems. (And I would rather not visualize what an anal beer bong is.)

This is just sad. I was a pretty innocent teen, and although there were some bad girls in junior high who brought alcohol to school, I don't think they were doing drugs.

The woman in the video who specializes in dealing with teen substance abuse says that drug use triples between sixth and eighth grade. Did you see this in your schools growing up?

When Michael Phelps partied at the University of South Carolina last November, he was reportedly slamming beers and acting obnoxious. But it was smoking marijuana out of a bong that got him suspended from swimming and dropped by sponsors. In the forthcoming book Marijuana Is Safer: So Why Are We Driving People to Drink?, authors Steve Fox, Paul Armentano, and Mason Tvert wonder if our country has it all backwards.

You can read an excerpt from the book, which comes out in September, on Alternet. In it, the authors point out that the Phelps bong photos hit the web on Super Bowl Sunday, as millions of Americans were drinking beers and watching beer commercials on TV - activities that are expected and encouraged.

Marijuana Is Safer looks at the laws governing both substances and attempts to shatter many of the myths associated with marijuana use. Olympic swimming champ Michael Phelps dove into some hot water when he was photographed taking a bong hit, but that has not kept the 14-Olympic gold medal winning Adonis from keeping some lucrative endorsement deals, including some new Subway sandwich ads opposite Jared, the usual spokesperson.

But enough about the nonessential. Is this buff swimmer (who sometimes looks - to me-either totally hot, kinda douchey, or a tad dorky) a do, dump or marry?

Sheriff Arrests Eight People in Phelps Marijuana Case

Eight people, most of whom had the unfortunate privilege of partying with Olympic great Michael Phelps, have been arrested in Richland County, SC. Seven have been charged with drug possession and one with distribution. The party where the illegal activity went down happened way back in November.

Authorities have also located and confiscated the bong that Michael Phelps put to his mouth in that infamous picture. It wasn't so hard, considering the owner was trying to sell it on eBay for $100,000. The owner, who wasn't at the party, is one of the eight people being charged. So far Phelps has dodged any legal recourse.

The sheriff maintains that he cannot turn a blind eye, after the picture of Phelps presented compelling evidence that a crime had happened in his jurisdiction.

Michael Phelps Drug Use Might Make a Case For Legalization

It's common knowledge that the last three US presidents have experimented with drugs. In fact, when asked if he ever smoked (and inhaled) marijuana, Barack Obama answered: "I inhaled . . . frequently. That was the point." And now we have proof that golden boy Michael Phelps has hit a bong before.

When it comes to marijuana, hypocrisy can grow like a weed in US society. Over the past year few people, if any, received more acclaim for their life accomplishments than Barack Obama (the first black president!) and Michael Phelps (he won eight gold medals!).

If such exalted individuals have used marijuana, can we really arrest regular people for it? The realization that our greatest role models have broken this law might be a sign that marijuana use isn't the sort of bad judgment we want to criminalize.

Do you think it's time to reconsider the ban on marijuana?
