High Blood Pressure's Effect on Your Sex Life

High blood pressure (also called hypertension) is really common. It can be caused by stress, a diet high in saturated fat and sodium, and it can also be a result of genetics. High blood pressure comes with a risk for heart problems, so if you suffer from hypertension, you may be wondering if it's still safe to get it on. Since sex (like all cardio activity) can get your heart pumping, the concern is that the physical exertion will put too much stress on your heart which could cause a heart attack. You'll be happy to know that according to the American Heart Association, fewer than one percent of heart attacks have occurred while getting busy in the bedroom. For guys, hypertension can cause erectile dysfunction, since blood flow to the penis may be slow. Having this problem even once can cause a guy to be really nervous and self-conscious about sex, which could affect the relationship and his performance.

For ladies, blood flow to the lady parts is also reduced, which can cause vaginal dryness, difficulty getting aroused, and issues with reaching orgasm. Also, if stress is the cause of her hypertension, she'll be too uneasy to allow herself to let go, so chances are her sex drive will suffer the consequences.

The bottom line here, ladies and gentlemen, is that high blood pressure is no joke. It can begin in your 20s and continue throughout your lifetime. NuvaRing and Blood Clots - How Likely Are They?

I've been receiving shocking emails lately, forwarded from friends about the NuvaRing causing ER visits and deaths due to blood clots. I'm not sure if you've heard any of this, but I thought it'd be a good idea to do a little research and set the record straight.

You should know that with the use of all hormonal birth control, there's the possibility of some serious side effects; one of them being blood clots which can lead to a fatal stroke or heart attack. This is a huge concern for women who have a history of blood clots or cardiovascular disease. With the NuvaRing, the risk may be greater because of the type of progestin hormone used in the Ring. It's different than the type used in other low-dose forms of birth control, such as the pill. This doesn't necessarily mean that you'll get blood clots from using the NuvaRing - it all depends on your body and how it reacts to certain types of hormones. Your risk for these serious side effects may be increased if you smoke cigarettes, are over 35, or have high blood pressure, high cholesterol, or diabetes. If you're a faithful NuvaRing user or know someone that is, I'd set your mind at ease by speaking with your doctor - he or she will be able to determine if the NuvaRing is a healthy option for you, or if you should switch to another form of birth control.

Vampires have long been a staple of romantic literature and movies, but with Twilight and True Blood, we're in the middle of a vampire sexual revolution.

In the latest issue of Nylon, True Blood star Stephen Moyer offers his theory as to why women are so drawn to vampires as sex symbols:

For a genre born out of the dark side, it's become awfully lighthearted. So much that Slate article "Vampires Suck" warns we're setting boys and girls up for two very different first dates. While girls dream about Edward "let's-save-ourselves-for-marriage-even-though-I'm-90" Cullen, boys are online watching porn, expecting sex on the first date and a threesome by the third.

I say that might be going a touch far, since we're pretty sure teenage girls aren't living in Twilight-encrusted vacuums . . . well, we're mostly sure! But the concern does raise another pressing question: when did this blood-sucking villain go soft?

Vamped Up: Why Vampire Stories Never Get Old

Every few decades vampires crawl out of their coffins and into the blood of the mainstream. Fantasy, romanticism, and the supernatural are the obvious escapes we take during extraordinary times, but vampires aren't ordinary immortals.

Vampire tales were first written when sex could not be openly discussed so they came complete with metaphors. Because they deal with the eternal issues of sex, mortality, and exclusion, every generation can retell the stories and infuse them with contemporary politics, culture, and issues of equality. Michael Dylan Foster, a folklore professor, told the New York Times that in this post-9/11 world, people are drawn to conspiracy theories and the idea that an unknown world could exist right before our eyes.

Take True Blood. HBO created buzz before the show's debut by plastering PSA-looking ads, which said, "Vampires are people too." That was only a hint of what was to come. In the hyperreality of True Blood, vampires are "coming out" and asking for acceptance among humans in the conservative South. There are vampire haters, vampire friends, and vampire lovahs known as "fang bangers." But you know what? Vampires and humans still can't marry! Sound familiar?

"I have decent enough sex with my boyfriend, but I don't always have an orgasm. I've heard that if my G-spot is stimulated, not only will I have a better chance of having an orgasm, but that it will be more intense. Is this true? Where is the G-spot?"

Let’s start with a little anatomy.

The G-spot is a relatively small patch of tissue that you can find by inserting a finger into the vagina and curving towards the belly button (upwards if you’re on your back). Many women report that the G-spot is much easier to find if they’re already turned on because it engorges with blood. In fact, some women and their partners find that the G-spot can go from impossible to find to quite prominent during arousal. So start off with something that definitely works for you and then try adding G-spot explorations.

The G-spot surrounds the urethra and some folks find that stimulating it can feel sort of like needing to go to the bathroom. You may find it helpful to go to the bathroom before starting out so that you’ll know that your bladder is empty. Also, some women have discovered that G-spot play can result in female ejaculation. While scientists disagree about female ejaculation, we do know that it’s not urine and is chemically similar to men’s prostatic fluid. This makes sense, since the G-spot and the prostate are quite similar. If you’re concerned about it, put a towel down first so you can relax and enjoy the ride.

As far as whether G-spot play will rock your world or not, I can’t make any promises. Some women adore it and would never choose to have sex without it. Others find it uncomfortable or say that it just doesn’t do anything for them. As always when it comes to sex, your mileage may vary so don’t get stressed out if it doesn’t do much for you.

OK, so how do you actually do G-spot play? First, it may be easier if your boyfriend is the one wielding the fingers. It can be a bit awkward to try to reach it yourself. Some popular techniques include the “come-here” motion, making circles, tapping, stroking, or the “windshield wiper” movement. It may also be more fun if he’s pleasuring your clitoris at the same time, perhaps with his other hand or his mouth. Or you could use a hand or a vibrator on your clit.

If you want to use a toy for the G-spot, try something with a curve or a prominent head since those shapes makes it easier to hit the spot. Here are a few popular ones. Or you might enjoy one of the ”Rabbit” style vibrators.

If you’re looking for ways to increase your chances of having an orgasm during intercourse, you might find that some G-spot fun as a warm-up improves your odds. Even if G-spot play doesn’t result in an orgasm for you, if it increases your pleasure and arousal, that will probably make it easier to have an orgasm when doing something else. Or you could have a G-spot orgasm before having intercourse, if that works better for you. You could also see if using a vibrator or your fingers on your clitoris during sex does the trick. After all, 70 percent of women report that they need some clitoral stimulation to have an orgasm, so you’d be in good company.
