The female equivalent of having a ringtone that says "I'm a tits and ass man" would basically be any song by Peaches. (F*ck the Pain Away, with its charming first line, comes to mind.) But this commercial begs a couple questions. First of all, why is beer associated with douchebaggery? Second, doesn't being a "tits and ass man" just mean you're a hetero dude? Dumb.

Jimmy Carter's Unintentional Legacy: Beer Making

Who knew we had Jimmy Carter to thank for honey-orange wheat ale? With an orange slice.

In 1978, Carter changed the post-Prohibition law that prohibited home beer brewing while permitting home wine making. The law instantly made it legal for each household to produce 200 gallons of tax-exempt beer each year. Oh. I thought it was each day. Anyway! Smart move, nonetheless, as the amendment effectively ended the pale-shaded, Schlitz-filled days of the '70s.

Though we can credit Carter for the wave of his pen, the born-again Christian had no interest (that I know of) in the legislation. A supplier of beer-making equipment in Rochester, NY, solicited his congressman to legalize home brewing. The bill passed through the House and Senate without fanfare and was signed by the president without remark. In fact, 24 years later, the New York congressman could not recall the bill when he was asked to discuss his role in jump-starting the "American beer renaissance."

Yet today more than 90 percent of small breweries are said to have roots in home brewing, proving how vital the bill was. So while Carter may have done little for the economy during the late '70s, he did wonders for the fruit, honey, and chocolate beers of today.

Germans Raise Steins to Oktoberfest, and Drunk Driving?

Chancellor Angela Merkel and her fellow German politicians gathered in Berlin yesterday to kick off that city's beer festival. Beer lovers will tap Munich on Saturday, when Oktoberfest officially begins.

Guenther Beckstein, the governor of Bavaria, which includes Munich raised eyebrows recently when he said, "If one drinks the two liters over six or seven hours at the Oktoberfest, it is still possible" to drive. He's now retracted those potentially irresponsible comments.

Political opponents hope that Beckstein's statement on drunk driving could help them defeat him in elections on September 28.

Now that would be sobering!

What Do Your Drinking Habits Say About How You Vote?

Beer guzzlers are more likely to vote Republican, and wine connoisseurs are more likely to vote Democrat. That's according to refreshing poll results released by CNN and the Opinion Research Corporation about how drinking habits correlate to voting.

John McCain's lead among brewski drinkers, however, evaporates against Barack Obama, as the two are tied among that group in a head-to-head match up. And, the most shocking result from the poll: about 50 percent said that they never drink, under any circumstance. I'm curious about the methodology.

Alas, you can bring it all back to gender and class stereotypes. The poll showed that women, people with a high income, and the college educated prefer wine. Men, and the working class, generally prefer beer.

Should the candidates bring their campaigns to the bars? Do your drinking preferences reveal anything about you?

Proposition 3-17: Make St Patrick's Day an Official Holiday

Guinness's plan to make St Patrick's Day an official US holiday is either a courageous campaign on behalf of Irish Americans, creative marketing, or both. The beer company is pairing everyone's favorite Irish holiday with politics. "Proposition 3-17" would make St Patrick's Day an official US Holiday, just like President's Day, the Fourth of July, Martin Luther King Jr. Day, etc. The movement is aiming for 1 million signatures, before presenting the petition to Congress.

The petition reads: "From the camaraderie in the streets to the joy pulsating in their hearts, people from all nationalities and backgrounds bask in the glory that is Irish."

My large Irish family always celebrates St. Patrick's Day welcoming family visiting from Ireland and all over the US with a big party, tasty food, a talent show, and an hours-long sing-a-long of Irish songs. Many Americans skip work on St Patrick's Day, even if they're clueless about Irish American heritage. Do you think making St Patrick's Day an official holiday would enhance the Irish Spirit, or just be an excuse to drink more Guinness? Are you ready to sign the petition?
