Tragedy: The All Metal Tribute to the Bee Gees

I remember the first time I heard this kind of musical chairs genre mixing. I was at a club in San Francisco and the opening act was a chamber orchestra tribute band for - wait for it - Duran Duran. Somehow, their slow, ponderous songs ("Save a Prayer," anyone?) really worked for string, woodwind and brass instruments. Which brings me to the awesomely named Tragedy, the all metal tribute band for the disco era Bee Gees. (And the guy kinda sounds like Axl Rose!)

Word on the street is that the remaining two Bee Gees brothers (RIP, Maurice) are ~~threatening to~~ hinting that they may reunite for a tour. So in anticipation of that sweet moment, I thought we'd take a look at the boys in their prime. It takes a real man to put on tight white high-waisted jeans, blow-dry his hair until it resembles cotton candy, and sing in a falsetto. (Also. . .are these guys part werewolf?) In any case, I love the Bee Gees (Brothers Gibb) with the same, unironic affection I reserve for ABBA and Air Supply. Enjoy!

US medics report that when students studying how to do CPR listened to the Bee Gees '70s hit "Stayin' Alive" while practicing chess compressions, following the beat of the song helped them space the compressions properly. When performed properly with the recommended rate of 100 chest compressions per minute, CPR triples cardiac arrest survival rates. Speaking of the disco classic's effect on students, one doctor said, "It drove them and motivated them to keep up the rate. . ." If simulated drowning isn't enough, you can add music to America's weapons of mass degradation. Amped-up tunes are used as "sonic bludgeons" at US military prisons in Iraq, Afghanistan, and Guantanamo Bay.

Songs such as Britney Spears's "Baby One More Time" are turned up and set to repeat to create fear, disorientation, and a prolonged capture shock. It can cause long-term psychiatric problems if blasted for extended periods of time. And it is!

Prisoners, who grew up in Afghanistan under the music-banning Taliban, are hypersensitive. The blasted music leads some to scream and smash their heads against walls. "Plenty," one former prisoner said, "lost their mind."

A Guantanamo interrogator bragged in an FBI memo that he only needed "four days to 'break' someone by alternating 16 hours of loud music with just four hours of silence." So, mission accomplished?
