U is the Australian variety of Kotex products. The commercial for the brand, albeit cute, is completely jacked. I wouldn't be surprised if a pack of men seated around a boardroom table enthusiastically approved this ad campaign: "OK, mates. How 'bout we have a big, furry beaver stand in for a chick's you-know-what, parade it around town, pamper the crikey outta it, and at the end of the day, give the thing what its always wanted - a box of tampons!" Ironically, the website for these products promises to "take the 'oo' out of the vagina taboo". . . with a big anthropomorphic beaver?

Flashback: Crispin Glover in The Beaver Trilogy

I remember catching this on cable one late night (it's not on DVD) and feeling like I'd fallen into another dimension. Directed by Trent Harris, The Beaver Trilogy is supposed to be a documentary, but let's just say it's loosely a documentary. It's about oddballs Trent met while on his travels, as well as Sean Penn and Crispin Glover acting like those oddballs. It just gives me a headache thinking about it, but this clip of Crispin as an obsessed Olivia Newton-John impersonator (that's right - he's impersonating an impersonator) singing "Please Don't Keep Me Waiting" is like the best of David Lynch. Spooky.

Senate Questions Interrogation Methods, Study Proves Torture

"If the detainee dies, you're doing it wrong." So says John Fredman, then chief counsel to the CIA's counter-terrorism center, explaining in minutes of a 2002 meeting released yesterday, concluding that torture "is basically subject to perception". The minutes were released in conjunction with the Senate Armed Services Committee investigation into the origins of harsh interrogation tactics used on prisoners at Guantanamo Bay and Abu Ghraib.

In a hearing yesterday that spanned eight hours, US military lawyers revealed details showing how techniques like sensory and sleep deprivation and simulated drowning were modeled on training given soldiers on how to resist questioning. Chairman Carl Levin said that explanation "twisted the law to create the appearance of legality".

Correspondence brought to light in the hearing showed concern about such techniques as far back as 2002 with one quote saying, “if we mistreat detainees, we will quickly lose the [moral] high ground and public support will erode.” Then despite objections by military lawyers, then Secretary Donald Rumsfeld approved sensory deprivation, sleep disruption, water-boarding and stress positions. “Officially it is not happening,” Lt. Col. Diane Beaver said in the 2002 information, adding that commanders were concerned that the techniques would be discovered by the Red Cross. White House spokesman Tony Fratto refuted the allegations yesterday saying:

Abuse of detainees has never been, is not and will never be the policy of this government. The policy of this government has been to take these detainees and to interrogate them, and get the information that we can get to help protect this country.

The investigation comes in conjunction with a new study released by Physicians for Human Rights who said they have evidence of torture and other abuse that resulted in serious injuries and mental disorders. One of the researchers said, "Some of these men really are, several years later, very severely scarred. It's a testimony to how bad those conditions were and how personal the abuse was."

Is the use of anti-interrogation training methods to create ways to interrogate, twisting the law to create the appearance of legality like Senator Levin says? Is concern over the Red Cross finding out, proof that there was knowledge the techniques were wrong?

Awaiting Results: Double-O! Obama Snaps Up Oregon

CNN has just projected that Barack Obama will walk away with a win in Oregon. The state has 52 pledged delegates to award, almost the same as Kentucky.

Speaking in Iowa, where this whole primary season began, Obama said:

In spite of all the doubt and disappointment - or perhaps because of it - you came out on a cold winter's night in numbers that this country has never seen, and you stood for change. And because you did, a few more stood up. And then a few thousand stood up. And then a few million stood up. And tonight, in the fullness of spring, with the help of those who stood up from Portland to Louisville, we have returned to Iowa with a majority of delegates elected by the American people, and you have put us within reach of the Democratic nomination for President of the United States.

On a side note, the long Democratic race has meant one other bonus: Oregon matters! My home state, the vote-by-mail only, late-in-the-primary game Beaver State has finally made more than a faint ripple in the pre-game show. I'm just delighted. Where do the Democrats go from here?

Do You Believe in Playing Hard to Get?

When it comes to dating, there is some truth to the statement "We want what we can't have, " but I've never been much into playing games. I don't appreciate it when guys take a week to call me back after a great first date, so I wouldn't avoid calling a guy if I really wanted.

I'm not saying I act like an eager beaver and call the hour after we say goodbye - but I don't see anything wrong with letting someone know you are interested. I guess I don't see the point in wasting a bunch of time playing a guessing game. If a guy's into me, I want him to tell me, and vice versa. Regardless if you wear your heart on your sleeve, there is still room for a lot of excitement in getting to know each other and finding out the ins and outs of each other.

What do you think. Are you into the dating game? Does it add to the excitement? Do you think it makes you more desirable to guys if you act a little bit aloof, or do you think it's a major turn-off? If you like a guy, do you tell him, or do you wait for him to tell you? Do you believe in playing hard to get or are you more into being straightforward?
