Batman and Bush - Actually More Alike Than Knight and Day?

If you caught The Dark Knight already, you might want to go back for a second look - did you know you may have been watching a flick all about George W. Bush? According to this WSJ op-ed, it's true:

There seems to me no question that the Batman film The Dark Knight, currently breaking every box office record in history, is at some level a paean of praise to the fortitude and moral courage that has been shown by George W. Bush in this time of terror and war.

The piece alleges that all movies with conservative values are fantasy flicks like 300 and that conservatives need to confront issues from their view point head-on. In current realistic depictions of terrorism:

The good guys become indistinguishable from the bad guys, and we end up denigrating the very heroes who defend us . . . Doing what's right is hard, and speaking the truth is dangerous.

So Bush wins and he's a hero? Is he George "Caped Crusader" Bush? Perhaps, it's not such a great thing. To see why, read more.

Resident expert Buzz concurs that The Dark Knight is indeed an allegory for our time, but our time is complicated:

We're reminded that sometimes evil simply exists for no good reason. It taps into a very real, basic, and horrible fear: that in this world where terrorism could lurk anywhere, where chaos and war and murder exist, we struggle continuously to figure out "why?"

The WSJ argues that Batman is Bush precisely because he's shown in dogged pursuit of evil, that it's the mark of a true hero. Though if one takes that argument in the whole scope of the movie, perhaps the Bush/man comparison isn't so flattering?

Batman spends the movie thinking he can conquer the Joker because he has faith in the clear definition between good and evil - and to this end, he utterly fails. Batman misunderstands the evil. There is no success to be had in Gotham using his plan. As Batman spirals into his quixotic quest for the Joker, he turns on everyone around him, spying and wiretapping his way to paranoia.

Though perhaps the comparison between the two is accurate, maybe it's not as flattering a depiction as the piece would like. But in the end, maybe Batman isn't Bush - maybe he's all of us.

Plain and simple, Christian Bale makes my heart go pitter-patter! And even though I'm not a fan of comic book movie remakes, I'll gladly sit through three hours of Bale on the big screen in The Dark Knight! I know some people can't get the thought of American Psycho out of their heads when thinking of him, but without reservation, I'd do Christian Bale in a heartbeat! I have a feeling this poll is going to be unanimous, but tell me, would you do, dump or marry our new resident Batman?

Newsflash: Batman was not only a degrading husband, but a sexist employer to boot. In the following PSA for the Federal Equal Pay Law, Batgirl argues that she's underpaid and deserves to earn the same wages as Robin. Although Batgirl's timing is a bit manipulative - a ticking bomb is about to blow Batman a new one and she's his only hope for escape - girlfriend's request is warranted. But the big boss thinks she's joking. To which, I say, let the Batdouche blow.

It's painfully obvious that Batman's wife left him cuz he's an emotionally underdeveloped tool with the hobbies and interests of a small child. If this tone-deaf rendition of "Patience" by Guns 'n' Roses was intended to bring this manchild's lost love back, then our downtrodden hero needs to hop in his batmobile and ride off into the Gotham City sunset - cuz it's so over.

This appeared in a 1959 Batman comic titled, "The Marriage of Batman and Batwoman." Once Bruce Wayne disclosed his superhero secret to his new wife, she wanted in on the action. I sure hope the scene above is depicting our newlyweds in the act of role-playing with Batman posing as The Joker for a change. Cuz his blatant sexism is villainous and downright detestable. You'd think their stalling would work against them, but thanks to the convenient manhole located smack in the middle of street, the Joker ain't the last one laughing and the crime fighting goody-goodies effortlessly save the day! Bwahahahaha!

Batman: Up to No Good Again

The last time we caught up with Batman, he was throwing punches at some random dude on Hollywood Boulevard while waiting for the cops to show up. Here he is again getting arrested over a porta-potty dispute in the same location. I guess superheroes have needs too, but couldn't it have waited, Batman? And also, get the hell out of Hollywood. It's no good for you.

Flashback: Holy Siamese Human Knot, Batman!

Back in the day, this was considered "action-packed" television? Awkward and uncomfortably staged is more like it. And if this "Siamese Human Knot" is Batman's idea of torture, then what kind of sheltered "superhero" are we following here? Although I do love the set design. They should have called this episode, "Batman and the multi-colored moving boxes." Now that would have been bad ass.
