Transit Officer Arrested For Murder After Killing Black Rider

A police shooting of a black train rider on Bay Area public transportation has caused an outrage and fiery protests in the community, and today Johannes Mehserle, the BART police officer who fired the shot, has been arrested for murder.

On New Year's Eve, 22-year-old Oscar Grant was shot by Mehserle while lying face down in a BART station. While on his way back from celebrating in San Francisco, the young and unarmed African American was pulled off a train, along with others, so train police could investigate a fight. In shocking video filmed by passengers, Officer Mehserle tried to put handcuffs on Grant, before he suddenly pulled his gun from his holster and fired one shot into Grant's back.

Mehserle was arrested today in Nevada. He said he left the Bay Area after receiving death threats. While more details will surely emerge, do you think the criminal justice system, and murder charges, are the proper way to address the death of Oscar Grant?

A Surprising Brouhaha Over the Use of the Word "Meh"

"Meh" is the online equivalent of saying to someone's face "whatever!" or my favorite variants, "whatevs" or the silent "W" formed with your thumbs and index fingers. The Daily Show correspondent John Hodgman complained about it on Twitter last week, claiming that it represents that the user has "missed the point," or worse - rejects joy! So of course, people responded to this Tweet with (drumroll): "Meh." Hahaha. "Meh" has been traced back to two Simpsons episodes in which Lisa and Bart express their disdain for something their parents did. It's an official word now, "meh" haters, so get used to it. Dear Poll: Would a Name Ever Be a Dealbreaker?

My friend has a running list that contains the names of men that under no circumstances will she ever date. (Yes, I'm completely serious!) When I heard that certain names, including Harold, Frank, and Bart, were her dealbreakers, I couldn’t help but laugh. I mean, what can a poor guy do about his awkward or geeky name? I guess everybody has their thing so would a name ever be a dealbreaker for you?

Product of the Day: Funyuns With Wasabi

I was out with a friend last night, and after some drinks, walking back to the BART, I thought, I need a snack-a trashy snack. Boy, I was not disappointed. Behold: Wasabi-flavored Funyuns. I haven't had Funyuns in a while, not because I don't like them, but because, well, you just don't see 'em around that much! (I've been told by those close to me that I'm the only adult they know who eats Funyuns. Hey, everyone else's loss-that's how I look at it!) Anyway, these were delish, with the kick you'd expect from Wasabi. At 99 cents a bag, how can you go wrong?

Subway Break Dancing

Springfield Meets Reality

The Simpsons Movie will hit theaters at the end of the month and a number of 7-11s across the country have been temporarily converted to Kwik-E-Marts to promote the release and make good Springfield citizens of us all. Thirsty? Try a frosty Squishee! Got the midnight munchies? How about a big bowl of Krusty-Os? Need a good laugh? Pick up a "Radioactive Man" comic book. Or just pay attention to the smart-ass advertising posted all over the store and product packaging. And, of course, there's Bart...or, at least, remnants of "El Barto" left as graffiti all over the walls. Ay Caramba!
