Clinton Wins in SD, Obama Wins MT, Takes the Whole Cake

Latest: Barack Obama has just been projected to win in the last primary of the election, Montana. Earlier tonight in a bitter victory, Hillary Clinton won the biggest share of South Dakota's 15 pledged delegates. Taking the biggest prize of all, CNN projected that Obama is the Democratic nominee.

Barack Obama has secured enough delegates to earn the Democratic nomination. He confirms what was thought earlier - that he had already secured the magic number to win the Democratic nomination earlier in the day, amid conflicting stories of Hillary Clinton conceding.

Hillary spoke to her supporters in New York tonight, stopping short of actually withdrawing from the race in the speech, instead asking people to write in and share their thoughts.

Many are now calling for a so-called unity ticket, slotting Hillary in to the VP position, as the best way to unite the embattled party after the long primary season.

John McCain jumped in on the action, delivering a major address tonight in which he praised Clinton and dogged Obama. McCain said,

Senator Clinton has earned great respect for her tenacity and courage. The media often overlooked how compassionately she spoke to the concerns and dreams of millions of Americans, and she deserves a lot more appreciation than she sometimes received. As the father of three daughters, I owe her a debt for inspiring millions of women to believe there is no opportunity in this great country beyond their reach. I am proud to call her my friend.

Awaiting Results: The Final Countdown

Aw! What a long, strange trip it's been! Jan. 3 in Iowa to June 3 in South Dakota and Montana, Liberty and I are getting a little weepy now that the primary season is all done but the counting. It seems like forever, especially when we dug back through everything that's happened in the past six months. It's almost like a funny yearbook. Take a peek while we wait for the results tonight. Stay sweet, don't change, BFFs etc. - do you remember this?

Hillary's sparkly sweet Christmas wrappingy-goodness television ad, where the gift tags all had presents the tax payers had actually purchased. I wonder if she saved the gift receipts?
Ha! Remember when we thought Super Tuesday might actually determine who was going to be the nominee? So cute and so wrong! Legendary Obama baby picture included.
Some of you might have been psychic? Way back on Feb. 5, 50 percent of you voted for Obama, 30 percent for Hillary. Hmm . . .
Oh, yeah! There was that guy who got in a stabbing fight with his brother-in-law over the candidates. I love the quote that set it all off.
Gloria Steinem's eyebrow raising "secretary" comment? That seems like 100 years ago!
Well, however it turns out tonight, we can all look back on that one shining moment when Barack and Hillary kissed - really kissed - and made up.

Awaiting Results: Clinton Pounds Obama in Puerto Rico

Hillary Clinton has cinched Puerto Rico's Democratic primary by a wide margin, CNN projects, giving her the larger share of the territory's 55 delegates.

Estimates show Clinton winning 68 percent to Obama's 32 percent. Though Puerto Rico went to the polls today, only the 50 states and Washington DC will get to weigh in come November.

Hillary will likely take 32 delegates from today's contest, and Obama, 14. Yesterday also saw the awarding of delegates when the DNC decided on Michigan and Florida, awarding the delegates half-votes, giving Clinton 87 additional delegates and Obama, 63.

Is the win for Clinton today, symbolic?

Awaiting Results: Double-O! Obama Snaps Up Oregon

CNN has just projected that Barack Obama will walk away with a win in Oregon. The state has 52 pledged delegates to award, almost the same as Kentucky.

Speaking in Iowa, where this whole primary season began, Obama said:

In spite of all the doubt and disappointment - or perhaps because of it - you came out on a cold winter's night in numbers that this country has never seen, and you stood for change. And because you did, a few more stood up. And then a few thousand stood up. And then a few million stood up. And tonight, in the fullness of spring, with the help of those who stood up from Portland to Louisville, we have returned to Iowa with a majority of delegates elected by the American people, and you have put us within reach of the Democratic nomination for President of the United States.

On a side note, the long Democratic race has meant one other bonus: Oregon matters! My home state, the vote-by-mail only, late-in-the-primary game Beaver State has finally made more than a faint ripple in the pre-game show. I'm just delighted. Where do the Democrats go from here?

Awaiting Results: Clinton Triumphs In My Old Kentucky Home

CNN is now projecting based on exit polls that Hillary Clinton has walked away handily with the biggest piece of the Bluegrass state's 51 pledged delegates.

If Obama winds up being the Democratic nominee, he'll have an uphill climb in Kentucky. According to exit polls, 41 percent of Clinton supporters said if Obama's the choice, they'd cast their vote instead for John McCain, and 23 percent said they would not vote at all. Those odds are worse for Obama than West Virginia.

Awaiting Results: Clinton Climbs On Top in the Mountain State

That counting didn't take long! CNN just projected that Clinton will win the biggest piece of the 28 delegates at stake in West Virginia, and by a wide margin.

According to exit polls, almost as many of Hillary Clinton's West Virginia supporters would vote for John McCain as would for Barack Obama. If Obama were the Democratic nominee, 36 percent of Clinton supporters said they would vote for him, while 35 percent said they'd cast their vote for McCain instead. Only five more contests remain up for grabs until the June 3 finish line.

What does this mean? Does this give Hillary a bump? Does this race not count because it was expected - or is a win, a win?

Awaiting Results: The Coolest Maps in the World!

While we wait for the results out of West Virginia, go check out these maps. I cannot stress enough how geeky rad these pixilated hot-spot vote maps from the Daily Kos are. And there's a million of 'em. Watch the colors shift over time, election by election. And it's all Dems baby. On the map, "red represents Clinton votes, green represents Edwards votes, and blue represents Obama votes." Hmm. The whole thing looks pretty red to me. . . ? Awaiting Results: Hillary Says "Hoosier" Daddy in Indiana!

Hillary Clinton slam dunked Indiana's primary, picking up the biggest share of the Hoosier state's 84 delegates according to CBS News.

Hillary had polled ahead in the state leading up to voting today. The split wins today almost guarantee the campaign will continue through the races up to June 3. Do you think this win legitimizes her ability to continue running? Are you glad she's still in the picture? Six in 10 Democrats say Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama should both continue their presidential campaigns - are you with them?

Al Gore has said this race won't end in a brokered convention - do you agree? Did either of the results surprise you today? Where does the race stand now?

Awaiting Results: Obama Smokes Clinton in North Carolina

CNN is projecting that Barack Obama has lit up the ballot boxes and scored a win in the contest for North Carolina's 134 delegate votes.

He was expected to do well, and the exact number of delegates he'll take from the contest will be determined at the end of the counting, though it seems like he won by a sizeable margin. This is his first big state win in several contests.

Interestingly, CNN exits polls in both IN and NC are showing that less than half of Clinton's supporters would support Obama if he was declared the nominee.

Though the drawn out race worries some, it hasn't hurt voter registration numbers - quite the opposite. A new study shows that one in 66 Americans registered to vote in the first three months of this year. North Carolina expected a turn out of 50 percent in today's voting - double the rate of past primaries.

Awaiting Results: Obama Takes Guam By Seven Votes

Seven. Votes. More than 4,500 Democrats voted in Guam today with the squeaker results: Obama, 2,264; Clinton, 2,257.

Well politics fans, it doesn't get any closer than that. The US territory will send four pledged delegates and five superdelegates to the National Convention, though they don't get a vote in the November general election.

Hillary Clinton has pledged to change that - according to her campaign Clinton, "believes that every American citizen should be able to vote for the president and have their vote count. Citizens should have representation in the executive branch of their national government. Territories send young men and women to serve in the US military, and they should have a say in who is their commander in chief."
