Ashley Judd Speaks Up For Victims of Human Trafficking
Jun 4 2008 - 11:00am The UN General Assembly met yesterday to discuss human trafficking, an annually $32 billion illegal industry. One star shined some light on the dark issue. Actress Ashley Judd, a board member of Population Services International, went to the UN headquarters in New York to speak about the cause she adopted after a 12-nation public health tour.

Good for her. This industry is beyond sickening. It's really a sad situation to know that human trafficking exists and we really can't do much about it as individuals.

If I had the funds, I'd buy as many people as I could, train them, and give them the chance to get on their feet. Then I'd work them like the dogs that they are...

I do think having Ashley Judd and Nicole Kidman visit these people and present their stories does make the situation more accessible - though I'm not sure why.

I thought actors were suppose to keep their mouths shut and we weren't suppose to listen to them.

Yes, I'm being a smart ass. Remember it's the person not the profession.

    Cheers!

    And go Ms. Judd.

It's not new: stars sold WWII bonds, a couple died on trips to do that; Will Rogers gave benefits to help people knocked down by the Depression, Myrna Loy worked with the U.N., Bob Hope traveled extensively to entertain U.S. troops, Marlon Brando was involved in Native American causes, Paul Newman's been giving to charities for decades, Harry Belafonte was part of the civil rights movement, Audrey Hepburn gave UN childrens' charities a big boost.

Celebrities are perfect actually for these types of things because of course the obvious one they have the money and resouces to visit. They have the expeirence of spokesperson. People might really love or idolize the person and as soon as they see them or their name look to see what is being talked about.

I think some people think it's a PR ploy. I don't think so at all. If you consider not just the time and money being put into it, what is more valuable is the emotion they put into these things. I'm talking about witnessing the sadness and hopelessness of the victims. I worked in nursing a long time and it's a very rare thing to see a wealthy happy person go into hospice (she also mentioned that, not just illegal stuff) and take time to be there.

Often some people don't want to empathize because they don't want to be sad. So, to me anyone who puts themselves into these situations, is really doing it because they want to do something. They're not just throwing money at something.

i heard that some children are trafficked for the purpose of adoption, and some young ladies are abducted and sold as wives in china. i think that the number includes this, not just victims of pedophiles. but obviously there are a lot of child sex trade workers therefore there are a lot of pedophiles. why are there so many pedophiles and why do we always here about the ones that are western Caucasian males? despite the sex trading being so much in Asia, i have never heard news stories where the pedophile is anyone other than a Caucasian male from Germany, France, UK, Austria, Australia, canada, usa, etc. Except for the rapists in china and south africa who claim that they were trying to cure their aids.

oops sorry for the double post. what i am trying to say, is that this says something awful about 'our' (western? modern?) culture. Is there too much freedom in North America or is it something about the restrictive Christian background that us, our parents, or our grandparents have? Genetics? Anyway this all grosses me out and i just wish it would go away!chilling...

I don't think it's just our western culture: you hear about 'rape rooms' in Iraq and Saudi Arabia, the horrific numbers of rapes of women & children in current conflicts in Africa. Western money & business attitudes added to some other cultures may be a relatively modern addition - It does seem that the sex tourism business is more open these days. But I also read that most chocolate is the product of the work of child slaves in Africa, there have been letter writing campaigns to Hersheys & Mars candy. As long as there's money to be made or saved and a customer for the product.

Also Steph...before Brangelina there was Josephine Baker. She adopted kids from all kinds of countries. These trends aren't knew just reimagined.

From wiki (I know, I know)
Though based in France, she supported the American Civil Rights Movement during the 1950s. She protested in her own way against racism, adopting twelve multi-ethnic orphans, whom she called her "Rainbow Tribe." [2] Her adopted children were: Akio (Korean son), Janot (Japanese son), Luis (Colombian son), Jarry (Finnish son), Jean-Claude (Canadian son), Moïse (French Jewish son), Brahim (Algerian son), Marianne (French daughter), Koffi (Côte d'Ivoirean son), Mara (Venezuelan son), Noël (French son), and Stellina (Moroccan daughter).[6]

On another note I really like Ashley Judd. She's always seemed extremely classy to me.
