Either the governor of California has the sense of humor of a high schooler, or the profanity gods have joined forces to help Arnold Schwarzenegger send a curt message to a political rival. In this letter meant for assemblyman Tom Ammiano, the Governator explained why he vetoed funding for San Francisco's waterfront. If you look closely, you notice that the first letter of each line spells out a phrase that effectively gets the overall message across.

California to Eliminate Funds to Domestic Violence Shelters

They don’t call him the Terminator for nothing.

The governor of California, Arnold Schwarzenegger, decided that one way of dealing with California’s budget crisis is to eliminate - not reduce - state funding for domestic violence shelters. The state’s budget for agencies that provide domestic violence services is typically $20.4 million. Agencies braced for a 20 percent reduction but had no idea how bad it could be.

A spokesperson for Catalyst, a nonprofit organization which provides, among its many services, a 24-hour crisis hotline, emergency shelter for victims of domestic abuse, counseling, a children’s program and legal support, says their volunteers are still in shock. 35 percent of their budget relies on state funding, and now it’s gone.

"We were bracing for the 20 percent cut,” said Executive Director Anastacia Snyder, “but did not believe the governor could, with a clear conscience, cut 100 percent of funding for services that keep women and children safe and alive." "Well I think that they say that Rush Limbaugh is the 800 lb. gorilla in the Republican Party. But I think that's mean-spirited to say that - because I think he's down to 650 lbs. I think one should be fair to him about this whole thing."

On CNN yesterday, the Republican governor of California sounded a bit like Rush-hater Keith Olbermann. Anyone think Arnold might switch parties soon? Who could be surprised? He's married to a Kennedy, after all.

VIP politicians and journalists got together to poke fun at President Obama behind his back last Saturday, at the annual Gridiron Dinner. But it's not like the Prez wasn't invited! Obama was the first president in decades to skip the Gridiron Club dinner during his first year in office. He opted instead for a quiet trip to Camp David with his family.

Joe Biden: Axelrod really wanted me to do this on teleprompter -but I told him I'm much better when I wing it. I know these evenings run long, so I'm going to be brief. Talk about the audacity of hope. President Obama does send his greetings, though. He can't be here tonight - because he's busy getting ready for Easter. He thinks it's about him.

Biden: Now let's see: we have a Republican speaker who was born in Austria, and tonight's Democratic speaker was born in Canada. Folks, this is Lou Dobbs' worst nightmare.

Michigan Gov. Jennifer Granholm: (Sarah Palin) really set back the cause of hot governors. You know where I'm coming from, Ed Rendell.

Arnold Schwarzenegger: You (the media) did such lovely work for (Obama). You put your lives on hold to put him in the White House. Now you get all dressed up, the champagne's on ice, and you find out he's just not that into you.

From the crazies who brought you The Obama/McCain danceoff, it's Governator Ahh-nuld Schwarzenegger himself as the Songinator! Gospel music, '60s folk songs, German nationalist music - there's nothing this guy won't tackle! (May I request some Kraftwerk and Rammstein?) In any case, because his performance is reminiscent of this character's, I fully sympathize with the children who run screaming from the room during his lullaby.

Al Gore Says Thanks, but No Thanks to Climate Czar Role

Word on the street is that Barack Obama plans to create a "climate czar" position to lead his administration's climate change and energy policies. But Al Gore, the most likely candidate, has already said that he doesn't want the job.

Perhaps Al Gore either didn't want to fill out that cumbersome questionnaire Obama is passing out to potential appointees, or saw the position as a demotion from vice president. Then again maybe he thinks he can get more done outside of government. Whatever the reason, Al Gore's disinterest may clear the way for another candidate - California Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger.

States, Provinces to Cap and Trade Sans Federal Governments

Seven western US states and four Canadian provinces have agreed to cut greenhouse-gas emissions by 15 percent before 2020. Proud of the Western Climate Initiative, Republican California Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger asserted:

We’re sending a strong message to our federal governments that states and provinces are moving forward in the absence of federal action, and we’re setting the stage for national programs that are just as aggressive.

So how will Arizona, California, Montana, New Mexico, Oregon, Utah, Washington, and the Canadian provinces of British Columbia, Manitoba, Ontario, and Quebec curb climate change? To find out, read more.

The states and provinces will set a mandatory cap on greenhouse gas beginning in 2012. The cap will get smaller every year. All sectors of the economies, from transportation to housing to electricity, will be expected to cut and pay for emissions. Industries, however, will receive allowances for their emissions. One allowance will cover every metric ton of emitted heat-trapping gas, and allowances can be traded on a secondary market.
