Unintentionally Funny: Ask Men Decodes Feminism

Ask Men recently called in a woman to answer the pressing question: what feminist demands do women want men to ignore?

The list the "relationship correspondent" came up with is awesomely and unintentionally funny, as is the accompanying article. Of course, the writer points out that she's not talking about "the stereotypical, garden-variety, hairy-armpit feminist." Instead she's focused on the "sexy feminist" - the non-clingy girlfriend who can pay her own bills.

The list of "those pesky feminist demands that even the most independent of women is expecting you to ignore" include:

"I can carry my own bag."
"Don't objectify me!"
"I'll pay my share."
"I can think for myself!"
"I won't be shackled into a marriage."

Would you be happy if men ignored these so-called feminist demands?

How Manscaped Do You Like Your Men?

A fascinating New York Times article charts the history of manscaping - the practice by men of removing hair from their chests, back, armpits or groin area. It used to be the province of male models, athletes, and homosexuals. No longer. If you look at the mass marketing of body razors (watch the commercial below for Braun bodycruZer razor "with a special attachment for sensitive areas"), you can see that every Tom, Dick and Hairy is supposed to manscape whether or not he's an athletic, gay, male model.

One survey of 364 male students at the University of South Florida on the subject of "male body depilation" found that more than 80 percent of them depilated. (I don't think I've ever used that as a verb.) The most interesting factoid? The graduate student who is conducting the survey said that there was no statistically significant difference between the number of gay men versus straight men who manscaped. How times have changed! I'm telling you, men are the new women.

His Sweat Tells a Woman He's "In the Mood"!

I've heard that some women love how their man smells after he works out, and it turns out that musty aroma might be telling you more than you think. According to a recent study, the scent of a man's perspiration can subconsciously tell a woman that he's "in the mood."

Researchers in this study asked 20 heterosexual men to stop wearing antiperspirant and other scented products for a few days. Then (this is a funny image!) they asked the men to put pads in their armpits while they watched pornographic movies so the scientists could gather their sweat. Afterward, they were asked to place pads under their armpits so sweat could be collected when they weren't aroused. Nineteen brave women's brains were scanned as they sniffed these pads and lo and behold, their brains reacted to the sweat produced when the guys were turned on. I guess we have a little animal instinct in us after all!

Do You Believe in Pheromones?

Some guys seem to exude sex, a trait often attributed to pheromones, the chemical signals that people supposedly emit when they're in the mood. But turns out, scientists have never been able to find evidence of such pheromones in humans.

In an essay published in the journal Nature, scientists say they haven't pinned down so-called "releaser pheromones" in humans, which would trigger sexual desire. They have, however, found evidence of "primer pheromones" related to physical reactions. Here's more:

Scientists have observed what they think are the effects of human primer pheromones, including studies showing that some compound in the extract from a woman's armpit can cause menstrual cycles of nearby women to sync up. And a recent study found that women can smell a guy's sexual intentions. . . . But without any actual chemicals identified as pheromones, scientists can't test effects on humans, so the jury is out as to whether we communicate via pheromones.

OK, first of all: How cool is it that they may have proven that menstrual-cycle syncing actually happens?! I thought that was just a myth. That makes me wonder if the sexual pheromones thing is also a myth or if maybe it's just not proven yet. What do you think?

How to Perform a Self Breast Exam

Being proactive and aware of our body and health is so important, especially as women. While heart disease is the leading cause of death for women in the United States, breast cancer comes in at a close second. Since October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month, I wanted to pass along some tips to help educate you on breast self exams. Click here to read more

By the age of 20, women should be giving themselves breast exams at least once a month in addition to seeing their gynecologists on a regular basis
The best time to perform your exam is when your breasts are not swollen or tender, most recommended a week after your period
Women who are breast feeding, have implants or who are pregnant should be more diligent about their exams as lumps can be harder to detect
You must administer your exam while lying down so your breast tissue can spread out evenly on your chest
Whichever breast you examine first, place that arm above your head and use your fingertips from your opposite hand to massage and feel for lumps in a circular motion
Start your exam by your armpit and continue down to your rib cage, or until you no longer feel breast tissue, in an up and down pattern (chin to belly button).
Repeat on the other side
After both breasts are completed, sit up and check for lumps in your armpit with your arm slightly lifted. If the skin is too tight, it will be more difficult to feel for abnormalities
Many women have lumpy breasts to begin with; so don't be too alarmed if you feel some bumps along the way. Some lumps could be calcium deposits, cysts, or Fibrocystic breast condition, which are typically non malignant, perfectly normal lumps

If you feel anything abnormal, consult your doctor as soon as you can. Many women get lumps that are non cancer threatening all the time, but it is always better to be safe than sorry. Getting to know your breasts, the shape, the feel and their look is the best way to detect if they have changed in any way which to alert you of any red flags. Help! I Am An Excessive Sweater

Dear Sugar
I am an 18 year old girl who suffers from excessive sweating in my armpits. I sweat through all my t-shirts and have sweat stains that are embarrassing and impossible to hide. When it is warm outside, I am too embarrassed to raise my arm in class because my sweat stains are so noticeable.

I have gone to see my doctor and have an appointment to meet with a surgeon, but in the meantime, is there anything I can do to keep my sweating under control? I would like to be able to wear a t-shirt without feeling grossed out or self conscious. Sweat Stained Stella

Dear Sweat Stained Stella
The technical term for excessive sweating is called hyperhidrosis. In your case, sweating under your arms is specifically called axillary hyperhidrosis where your body sweats beyond what the body needs.

This condition can be quite embarrassing, but there are ways to treat it. Since you have already made an appointment with your surgeon, there are a few non surgical options I suggest you look into before going under the knife.

A few different brands of antiperspirant are marketed towards mild to moderate cases of excessive sweating. Drysol is available only with a prescription and Maxim, a new product, is available without a prescription. There is also DriOff Gel. These antiperspirants contain aluminum hydrochloride to help put an end to the excessive sweating under your arms.

There is no specific medication targeted to combat axillary hyperhidrosis, but Ditropan as well as Robinul and Probanthine have been known to block the neuro transmission responsible for the production of sweat. These medications also have a side effect of dryness which helps target the problem area as well.

Another quick fix is Botox believe it or not. Injecting Botox in your armpits blocks the chemical transmitter that causes sweating. This is not a permanent solution, but can temporarily help for three to six months at a time.

The only permanent solution for axillary hyperhidrosis is surgery so I am glad you have consulted a doctor. Endoscopic Thoracic Sympathectomy (ETS) and Superficial Liposuction, which has a 95% success rate, are the two surgical options to cure your problem. I hope these more conservative methods tie you over. Good luck with your surgery.
