Arianna Huffington Says Sleep Will Change the World

A few hours of snooze time could've nipped the economic collapse problem in the bud. Maybe. That's what my revelation was last night, which hit me when Arianna Huffington spoke at the Commonwealth Club, a nonprofit organization that holds public forums for the greatest minds and influencers.

At the end of each Commonwealth speaking engagement, the moderators always asks their high-profile guest to voice a 60-second pitch to change the world. Arianna, the woman who made the magic of Huffington Post happen, replied in less than a minute and said, "Get enough sleep." Wait a minute. That's it? Don't tell me that issues like the 8 million Americans who lost their jobs last year, the 1.4 million who filed for bankruptcy, and more personally, my friend who is on the verge of losing her house, can be solved with a simple trip to dreamland?

Of course, Arianna was half joking, but at the same time, there was a tone of truth to it. The news website mogul said she really believes that if leaders were sleeping enough, they would be wiser about their decisions. Even President Obama and his economic brain team, which includes Timothy Geithner and Larry Summers, need to have a good work-life balance. Let's face it, they're humans too. This means they can burn out, just like everyone else.

I've constantly talked about the dangers of being sleep-deprived, such as how it can result in mental problems, so Arianna's comment on shuteye just further drives the importance of sleep home. Do yourself a favor, and take heed from Arianna's words: "It's time to get some sleep."

Arianna Huffington Says the Media Gives Equal Time to Lies

This week I attended a panel put on by the New Democratic Network (NDN), a progressive think tank. Speakers like Mayor Booker from Newark, NJ, Cecile Richards, the president of Planned Parenthood, Jonathan Atler, the senior editor of Newsweek, and the amazing Arianna Huffington, editor in chief of the Huffington Post, discussed their ideas for a better tomorrow.

Cecile Richards pointed out that Planned Parenthood does more to prevent abortion than any other group, and said that John McCain and his 0 percent voting record with Planned Parenthood would take American women backwards. Arianna Huffington discussed what she calls the Pontius Pilot media, which tries to find the truth by giving equal time to partisan arguments. She argued that the truth often rests unequivocally on one side. Here's how she answered a few questions from the audience.

How dangerous are the networks with their talking heads and fake drama?
Right now it's about the real conflict in the Democratic Party between Hillary and Obama supporters. It's not resolved. But the way it dominates is disproportionate. [The story] is easy. Like college football. It's not like people's lives are at stake.

How can we get people to change their outlook? To see the answer

Instead of trying to move people away from Fox or voters away from McCain, target people who have given up. Target the 83 million eligible voters who did not vote in 2004. The millions who don't vote just think politics can't change anything. How many universal healthcare plans have been presented? All those who have given up are rationale. We have to convince them.

How do we convince those who gave up?
For example, Huffington Post launched new lifestyle sections for users who do not agree with our politics, but will discover our politics.

Last night on The Colbert Report, Arianna Huffington explained that John McCain's passion for Iraq is "his Viagra." Ariannna, the supreme ruler of the liberal site The Huffington Post, discussed how she fell out of love with her former hero McCain, while promoting her new short-titled book: Right Is Wrong: How the Lunatic Fringe Hijacked America, Shredded the Constitution, and Made Us All Less Safe.

The Huffington Post is not shy about its agenda - and love for Barack Obama. The fact that the site features unabashedly left-leaning opinions, often written by public officials or celebrities, probably means you either love it or hate it. I actually spend more time reading the comments, which are often fiery, but surprisingly nuanced.

One of Tracy Ullman's best impersonations (in my mind) on her new show State of the Union has to be blogger Arianna Huffington. It's pure genius and reminds me of all the times I've ad libbed tech terms into everyday conversation and gotten confused "huh?" responses from my audience. Comedian Tracey Ullman, and former Brit, has become a US citizen, right in time to start using her fellow Americans as material for her new show "State of the Union."

If Ullman's impersonation of the Greek-born progressive blogger is a sign of things to come, I can't wait to catch entire episodes of the show. Happy National Sleep Awareness Week! I've been seeing so many sleep articles this week, including this really creative one today by our pals at LearnVest. They mentioned all these sleep aids that I've never thought of trying, such as a free software that monitors exposure to artificial light from your computer. I thought that was such a fantastic frugal sleep aid that I was inspired to come up with a list of my own tips that won't cost a cent:

Watch the Clock. FitSugar recommends getting up and going to bed at a regular time to set your circadian rhythm. This means having a natural alarm clock (no annoying snooze button!) and feeling refreshed when you wake up.

Do-Not-Do List. I've talked about a do-not-do list, in which you write down the tasks that you didn't complete before you head off to snoozeland. This will help you stop thinking about what you have left to tackle on your to-do list and let you blissfully count sheep or have other peaceful presleep thoughts.

Jennifer Aniston stepped out in a supersexy black Versace dress to support a Stella McCartney-clad Chelsea Handler, who was among the honorees at Glamour's Women of the Year Awards at Carnegie Hall in NYC Monday evening. On stage Jennifer professed that she is "madly in love" with Chelsea and bestowed tons of praise on her funny friend, while also working in a dig about the "esteemed E! network" in her presentation speech. Reese Witherspoon took part in the night by participating in the hilarious montage to introduce Chelsea.

The comedienne and late night host played it humble in the presence of fellow women of the evening, including Gloria Steinem and Arianna Huffington. For her part, Chelsea gushed right back about the females in her life and closed out her acceptance by talking about being a good sister and friend since she'll "never be a mother." Jennifer actually had her own cheering section at the show, since Justin Theroux slipped in to watch her on stage.
