The Clinton campaign let loose at the last minute, running an ad featuring shots of historic world events such as Pearl Harbour and the fall of the Berlin Wall, with clips of al-Qaeda leader Osama Bin Laden and Hurricane Katrina victims and the concluding line, "you need to be ready for anything." The Obama campaign said of the move, "we already have a president who plays the politics of fear, and we don't need another."
Need to Know: Kurdish Genocide Led by "Chemical Ali"
This week Iraq upheld the death sentence of Ali Hassan al-Majid, a.k.a "Chemical Ali." This cousin of Saddam Hussein led the al-Anfal ("the Spoils") genocide campaign against the Kurds in 1988. Between February and August 1988, over 100,000 Kurds died and 2,000 villages were destroyed at the hands of Saddam's Baath party.

- A huge explosion in a retail center near Chicago injured eight people, including two who were trapped in the rubble and were rescued by firefighters. The explosion happened around noon, and fire officials are now speculating the cause of the explosion was a gas leak, though nothing is conclusive due to the severe damage of the building. Nearby Tuxedo World, Cleopatra’s Unisex Hair Salon and a Cellular Concepts store were also severely damaged.

Sacha Baron Cohen's Ali G character is such a wanker, but what a funny wanker he is! In this clip, he reassures a pro-choice lesbian activist couple, "I love lesbians--I have loads of your videos," tells marchers "I's totally into abortion--I've been responsible for at least five," and yells "Free Nelson Mandela" in the middle of a rally. But it's his addition of beat box noises to an earnest rendition of "We Shall Overcome" that will slay you.

Father of Slumdog Star Denies Putting Daughter Up For Sale
The father of Slumdog Millionaire star Rubina Ali has denied putting his daughter up for adoption (or, as the rest of the world says, "sale") to the BBC.
Over the weekend, UK paper News of the World reported he was asking £200,000 (nearly $300,000) for his 9-year-old daughter. I'd like to say it wasn't as sinister as it sounds, but, basically, it was.

Pakistan's New President Finds Himself in Awkward Trouble
When American politicians do something awkward they have to answer to YouTube, but Pakistan's new president, Asif Ali Zardari, has to answer to religious leaders and feminists. A religious leader issued a fatwa, a nonbinding opinion on Islamic law, condemning Zardari for flirting with Sarah Palin at the UN. The radical prayer leader said Zardari disgraced the whole nation with "indecent gestures, filthy remarks, and repeated praise of a non-Muslim lady wearing a short skirt."
