Al Franken Sends Love Letter to Wife - and to Constituents

This past Saturday was the 40th anniversary of the night Al Franken met his wife Franni. Did he send her a box of chocolates and take her out to dinner? I hope so - but the Senator from Minnesota went one better. He sent an email to his supporters honoring the occasion, describing how he met Franni, and saying that he wouldn't be where he is today without her. Here's an excerpt:

"That night - the first night of the best thing that has ever happened to me - was exactly 40 years ago today. When I was running for the Senate, I used to tell people, 'Franni and I are running for the Senate. If we win, I get to be the Senator.' Well, we won. And what I said proved true - I get to be the Senator. Another thing that’s true is that I wouldn’t be where I am today without the love and support of the most amazing woman in the world."

He ended this message by asking his readers to "take a moment today, remember a funny story about someone you love, smile, and be thankful." All together now . . . awwww! I wonder if Franni is embarrassed.

Lighten Up! Candidate Al Franken Writes a Skit for SNL?

Comedian Al Franken, who is currently running for Senate in Minnesota, phoned in this weekend's opening skit on Saturday Night Live, according to NBC insiders.

Both SNL and the Franken campaign want to downplay Al's involvement. Allowing a liberal Democratic candidate to write a piece critical of John McCain could make the network look bias. And as for Franken, his campaign has spent a lot of time trying to contextualize his funny, yet risqué, past. The official story is that Franken, who hasn't worked on SNL for 13 years, called creator Lorne Michaels to chat about something else. The topic of McCain commercials came up, and Michaels went on to create a sketch after he hung up.

I often think candidates would do well if they used pieces of political comedy as their campaign commercials. For example, no one can articulate hypocrisy quite like Jon Stewart's Daily Show. Check out the alleged Franken sketch - should the campaign gladly take credit for it?

US Senator From Minnesota: Jesse Ventura vs. Al Franken?

Jesse Ventura is hinting at a run to be the US Senator from Minnesota this fall. Only problem, there is already an eccentric and popular personality with his hat in the ring - satirist Al Franken!

Let's compare credentials. Franken has worked on Saturday Night Live, and written books like Lies and the Liars Who Tell Them. He is also a pioneer of progressive talk radio.

Jesse "The Body" Ventura is a former governor of Minnesota, Navy veteran, and radio and TV host. Oh and don't forget - he's also a veteran of professional wrestling.

Who would you like to see in the Senate - the wrestler or the comedian? Are both skills equally suited to Congress?

Funny Man Al Franken's Campaign Flummoxed by Blogger

Al Franken, former SNL funny man turned face of Air America is the Senate candidate running for election in Minnesota, interested in discussing problems that concern his constituents. You know the good issues like jobs, health care, and the environment. Enter the blogosphere. Oops. Unfortunately for the Franken campaign, what he's now being forced to discuss is his failure to pay his income taxes on time. To the tune of $70,000 in 17 different states.

Republican blogger Michael Brodkorb started the blog MinnesotaDemocratsExposed and scooped the mainstream media to out Franken's suspicious bookkeeping and calls Franken “mean spirited and un-Minnesotan” candidate behind a “desperate and ridiculous” campaign. Franken says of the blog, "when people talk about the right wing noise machine, that's what it is." Brodkorb says, "I do think it has some influence right now, but that's never what I sat down to do. This was always about a political junkie looking for an outlet."

Franken is taking on Republican incumbent Senator Norm Coleman.

But, Al - if it's true, how is it noise?
