Art Mimics Life: Obama Holding Jack Bauer Hostage?
Jan 12 2009 - 11:00am When the new season of 24 kicked off last night, hero Jack Bauer was the subject of a congressional investigation looking into his hasty executions and use of torture. The Telegraph quotes Bauer, who said: We've done so many things in the name of protecting this country, we've created two worlds. Ours and the people's we've promised to protect.

Why would taking a different and more thoughtful direction to the theme of the shoe have to be considered as "kowtowing to liberal bullies"? That's just silly. As is taking any fictional TV show so seriously.

Bush gave his last press conference today and that came with so much information and quotes to pour over and we get Jack f'n Bauer?

    Seriously???

I saw 24- and frankly it still is as conservative as the previous episodes. Strange that one quote would make it left-leaning.

I truthfully have no idea how that show lasted as long as it has. The whole first season was like a 24 hour day, the premise of the show... It has skewed from that. I don't know, just a weird show.

I always get annoyed at people who just post to complain on a website so I'll try to keep this brief but am I the only one who is noticing how light the stories on Citizen have been lately?

Is the Sugar network just trying to get rid of the Citizen aspect altogether?

I hope not, Haus, but it does seem like there's less to chew on here lately Sad

Going back to 24, fiction should anyway not be limited by ideology. That just turns it into insincere propaganda.

I watched the show, and they did open it up a little bit with the quote above, but Jack also said that he did not regret what he had done. The show is about the serious nature of fighting terrorism and some of the sacrifices that have to be made, but it has always showed the moral problems that go along with certain decisions as well.

It's just a tv show, and people shouldn't watch it if they don't like what's portrayed. Personally, I will still be watching for now.

No matter which "direction" they are leaning towards, once a show goes so far in one direction, they HAVE to go back the other way. They lose audiences if they get so extreme that it becomes absurd...which I think "24" has already past that mark.

That quote was more of a self-commentary by Jack Bauer on his own actions than about politics as a whole. It's never been about the politics as much as it has been about making decisions in the heat of the moment, and about the actions of one man.

The farther we get away from 9/11 the less seriously we take terrorism. I'm not sure if this is a good thing or a bad thing. I think at first we overcompensated for what happened and I think we've reached a point where we're far enough away from what happened to see it clearly. Then we will reach a point where we are too far away and won't take the threat seriously enough. I don't think it's Obama that changed the show's views on terrorism. It's time

I never watched 24. I heard it was addictive and the last thing I need is to be addicted to another crappy TV show. Isn't it bad enough that I can't miss an episode of GG or Lost?

That being said, I don't think they are going to change the ideology behind 24 at this stage in the game. What they've been doing has been working so far hasn't it?

My addiction is LOST, and I cannot afford another.
But even though 24 is a tv show, entertainment, it is a huge reflection of our times. When a show like this shifts its ideology, even if it is only a perception of a shift, it is politically meaningful, even if just for analysis and discussion.
And I do believe it could be kowtowing, i.e,. jumping on the bandwagon.
