Dems Pick Up Five Repub Senate Seats, Races Still Unclear

Democrats picked up the majority plus at least five seats in the Senate Tuesday by seizing seats from Republican incumbents in New Hampshire and North Carolina, while also gaining seats left by retiring Republicans in Virginia, Colorado and New Mexico.

The New York Times has a comprehensive Senate map with the state results as they come in, but at 4:30 EST on Wednesday Democrats had 56 seats and Republicans had 41. Fifty-one is considered a majority, but it could be a few weeks before Democrats learn the final stats.

Democrats are still short of the 60-vote majority that would enable them to push bills to a vote by overcoming filibusters.

On election night Obama greeted the world from Chicago's Grant Park, exclaiming that:

Change has come to America. If there is anyone out there who still doubts that America is a place where all things are possible. Who still wonders if the dream of our founders is alive in our time, who still questions the power of our democracy, tonight is your answer.

The road ahead will be long, our climb will be steep, we may not get there in one year or even in one term, but America, I have never been more hopeful than I am tonight that we will get there. I promise you. We as a people will get there.

Poll: Is Election 2008 Must-See TV?

The writers' strike is depriving us of scripted drama. Even so, New York Times columnist David Carr says the breakout television hit this season is the presidential election.

Carr wrote:

"January was supposed to be the month when the writers’ strike took its toll [...]. Instead, the primary season is serving as the backdrop for one of the most compelling runs of event television in years, creating the kind of chatter network marketers would kill for and spectacular ratings for cable news."

A scant 30 days stand between now and Election Day, but there's still time to change your mind about who to vote for. But I'm dying to know whether or not you would change the vote you cast four years ago. Since hindsight is 20-20, tell me, are you happy with the person you wanted to be president these last four years, or do you have voter's remorse?

If your answer is "yes," I'd love to know what made you make that shift. Was it one specific event? What are you doing to make sure your 2008 vote is a keeper?

Biggest Headlines of 2008: Barack Obama Defeats Hillary Clinton For Nomination

Hillary Clinton had the name, the experience, the money, the contacts, and the tenacity - yet her momentum of inevitability couldn't stop Barack Obama. Before he upset Hillary in the Iowa primary, few people took the two-year senator's chances of beating the front-runner seriously. His victorious finish in the the marathon Democratic primary proved to be one of the most shocking headlines of 2008, and of American political history.

Obama's ability to persevere through dozens of debates with such a policy-expert as Hillary, and his skill in dodging the kitchen sink lobbed his way from Camp Clinton proved to make him a stronger general election candidate. The early airing of potential scandals (like Rev. Wright or the Obama in Muslim garb pictures) and Obama's demonstration of executive prowess in running a capable campaign most likely got Americans more confident in his presidential abilities.

And, of course, the storyline for these two Democrats is far from over. Perhaps something they accomplish together as president and secretary of state will make the cut for biggest headline of 2009! As for this past year, stay tuned because we'll be looking back on all the biggest news from 2008!

Who Is Your Favorite Celebrity Campaigner?

The 2008 presidential campaign inspired a year of political expression and celebrities were no exception. Will.i.am remixed Barack Obama's landmark speech and spoke out at the DNC, Diddy said Sarah Palin "scares him" and Matt Damon called her VP nom a "bad Disney movie." Scarlett Johansson upped the Obama love by saying she was engaged to him. Meanwhile celebs like Heidi and Spencer, Ben Affleck, Brad Pitt, and Halle Berry showed support through quieter efforts and political t-shirts. On the small screen, Oprah kept her endorsement off air until after the election, but celebrated with a special tear-filled show and The View's Elisabeth Hasselbeck campaigned for McCain and Palin, calling the pricey wardrobe scandal "sexist."

Day 2: What's Going on at the Republican Convention

While we're awaiting a conference call at 10:30 a.m. ET to confirm how many of the day's convention activities will be on today, in the meantime there are still a bunch of things worth checking out today:

Update: Ron Paul will address the Rally for the Republic at 1:30 p.m. ET, and you can watch it live, plus President Bush is expected to address the convention tonight via satellite from the White House.

12:00 p.m: The Big Tent Event hosted by the Log Cabin Republicans.
1:00 p.m: Politics and the Media: Bridging the Political Divide in the 2008 Election, sponsored by USC Annenberg's Center on Communication and Leadership/Politico
2:00 p.m: The ONE campaign's community service project, assembling caregiver packs for those working abroad.
3:00 p.m: The session will probably start around this time, but we're awaiting the call to see who will be speaking today, though the Times is reporting that Fred Thompson and Joe Lieberman will be giving speeches tonight.
Later on I'm heading out to see Lizz Winstead's (creator of the Daily Show) comedy show and convention commentary.

McCain's campaign manager Rick Davis has just confirmed that the RNC will resume today with a full schedule including Lieberman and Thompson speaking tonight.

What Do You Think Will Happen Tomorrow?

Polls indicate that Barack Obama is set to become the next president of the United States. But we all know that a lead in notoriously volatile polls only guarantees the opportunity to experience an embarrassing upset.

John McCain's path to the White House is narrow: he must win all the states Bush picked up in 2004, or capture a big enough Kerry state to make up for a loss. But thanks to a recent tightening in the polls, a McCain win appears in reach.

After almost two years of campaigning, a less-than-dramatic finish could be anticlimatic. If an extreme outcome is in store, do you think the 2008 election will end in a landslide like the 1936 election, when Franklin D. Roosevelt won 523 votes to Alf Landon's eight? Or will it be similar to the 2000 fiasco, which ended 36 days after election day?
