Flashback: '70s TV Show Predicts Future Fashion Trends

Tomorrow Today was a UK television program of the '70s that claimed to predict trends and lifestyle habits of the future. And where did the experts foresee fashion going? They had a space-age getup in mind, complete with metallic miniskirts and "specially adapted cosmetics belts" to free us ladies of our bulky purses. How novel! Thirty years later, we can thank our lucky stars that these predictions were all wrong. Really now, what girl would give up her freedom to tote a Birkin?

Mandy Moore Wants You to Energize Your Ladyparts

Douches and Red Bull often go together, but not like this. Mandy Moore totally nails the '70s lady-commercial voice and the fashions in this parody ad for Red Bull Douche, "the world's first feminine hygiene product with Red Bull." Admittedly, I've sometimes wished I could mainline energy drinks - just not down there. Be sure to watch until the tagline at the end.

55 Miles Per Hour! Should the Nation Slow Down?

US Congresswoman Jackie Speier (D-CA) wants the nation to slooooow down. The representative, channeling Richard Nixon, has proposed a national speed limit of 55 miles per hour.

In 1974, Nixon ushered in a fuel-conservation policy unseen since World War II. The new law covered the nation with a federal speed limit (up to that point, states had set their own limits) and cut off federal funding to states that wouldn't comply. Nixon's act was repealed by Congress in 1995. Now back in similar oil-straits like the country saw in the 70s, slowing down to conserve may be back in fashion.

Here are some of the highs and lows of slowing down:

The Pros: Leads to safer driving, saving lives. Saves money, since each five miles over 60 mph costs 30 cents more per gallon. Decreases dependence on oil producing countries.

The Cons: Could result in more traffic, slower commutes. There is a possibility for more speeding tickets. Insurance rates could go up, as a result of tickets.

Even though Sammy Hagar can't drive 55, is this a good idea?

Flashback: '70s Men's Jumpsuit

This guy's looks says, "Okay, I don't have all day. Take off your clothes now. Oh, and nice to meet you." Dude's got so much attitude it threatens to spill out from the zippered enclosure he's poured himself into. This "fashion climax" is made of 50% polyester, 50% cotton - but it's 100% fierce. (I would kill to see the short-sleeved version in camel.) Had Dimitri lived in the '70s, this is what he would have worn.

Flashback: '30s Fashion Predictions for the Year 2000

Famous American fashion designers of the 1930s were asked to predict what well-dressed folks would be wearing in the year 2000. Some predictions were spot-on and others were way off. These fashionistas somehow foresaw women of the millennium donning skanky see-through dresses, accessorized with body temperature regulating belts - for our ever-frequent hot flashes, I presume? And let's not forget the nifty headlights installed atop our heads - to offset our dim-witted minds, maybe? Lord I wish this were a real movie. Italian Spiderman has actione, velocita, terrore, suspenso, and romanza...what more could you ask for? Well, how about a Jack Black look-alike who more than fills out his tight suit, an awesome soundtrack punctuated by the roar of a cheetah, and hot 70's fashions? Dario Argento would be so proud...
